RE: Who would you like to be an Encyclopedia Salesman?

What's an encyclopedia? With Google and Wickipedia ... does anyone use the old books anymore? We did have them growing up.
My husband and I were talking about this one day ... watching a lawyer type show on TV. In the law office were bookcases and bookcases STACKED with books, looking very much like the hardcover encyclopedias .... and I said "THAT'S where all those old encyclopedias went!"

RE: stick and brick downsizing

We are putting our stick n brick up for sale also. We are planning on living in the Voltage 3905 for a couple of years until we know for sure we want to go back to house living. We have a 2,600 sq ft home on 8 acres of land with a gorgeous view and wildlife, 1 out building, attached 2 car garage, NO basement. Five minutes to the South Fork of the Snake River and 5 minutes to Palisades Lake. JUST put in granite throughout the house in Feb. 2011 (left in April 2011 for hubby's job), AND a brand new washer/dryer March 2011. : > (((
We'll do the storage thing ... like many have said ... probably until we realize we don't need the 'stuff' and stop paying the rent.

RE: direct TV complaints

We cancelled our Direct TV service because we're travelling for my hubby's job for an extended period of time. In 2008 we purchased a High Def TV ... at that time and for where we live DTV told us we HAD to purchase the HIgh Def DVR for $300+. NOW when we cancelled the service we HAD to return BOTH receivers. I told them we paid over $300 for it and we OWNED it .... it had been swapped out because the first Hi Def DVR failed very quickly and according to DTV we no longer owned the DVR and to avoid bad credit woes we HAD to return the DVR. Total rubbish .... but now being on Comcast ... they're expensive and I;m not thrilled with them either. ANY industry NOT regulated (like the electric & phone service USED to be) is rubbish.

RE: Pretend you were gone for a week - how wild would it get?

I have to agree with the shoes and the mail. Shoes would be ALL over the floor and in the MIDDLE of the floor. He is able to step over them ... perhaps because he isn't carrying huge baskets of laundry that block his vision. I on the other hand seem to trip over ever dang one of them.
The mail? He wouldn't even open the real, important mail ... never mind the junk mail.
Food? He has NO IDEA what to do with the food in the pantry. I have 2 weeks of meals planned out with all of my staples ... so yes, tons of pizza and delivery food.

RE: Accident: Who is at fault?

Doug ... glad you said you weren't the driver of the Mazda ... I was going to ask that. So ... where's the hypothetical? Sounds like a real situation, real accident and real damaged bumper. : ? )
Were you the driver of the truck?
The truck driver is NOT at fault ... he was behind the Mazda and it was a car that hit the Mazda. Is this an assignment in details?

I showed hubby the pictures ... he thinks it looks like two sheets of plywood installed side by side .... which doesn't make any sense at all ...

We haven't used our 3905 for toys yet. Hmmm .... hope the day we do, we don't see that crease developing.

RE: Jeff Dunham biography

I've been to Terry Fator's show ... soon after he won AGT. He's good ... and perhaps has improved ... but he's NO Jeff Dunham. I've been watching Jeff for years .... love him, love his comedy and his standup.
Terry Fator ... dumped his wife of 20+ years and marryied a fluzy THE DAY HIS DIVORCE WAS FINALIZED .... I lost all respect for him.
When I saw him live, he praised his wife for all of her support and love and how his success was theirs together .... and a year later ... divorced and married to a 24 year old fluzy. Schmuck ....

RE: Vegatable rant

I'm from the East Coast ... lived in CA for 15 years ... and I LOVE raw veggies. Maybe NOT brussel sprouts raw ... but I do love them and broccoli et al steamed and crispy/crunchy.
p.s. Grew up with CANNED .... yuck ... veggies. Probably why I went so far in the raw direction.

RE: Car Rental

We just got back from Key Largo, FL ... rented from Thrifty for 4 days and were told there would be a toll road as we headed to the Miami airport to drop the rental car. Fine, we'll pay the toll. NnnnOOOOO ... the toll is ONLY paid via a 'Sun Pass'. Thrifty said they would affix it to the windshielf for $6.99/day on a 4 day rental = $28 before tax. ???? For 1 toll???
So we bought the pass at Publix grocery. Paid $4.99. Had to go on line and activate and load minimum of $10.00 onto the card. Had to REMOVE the transponder from the windshield when we returned the car .... CALL sunpass and CANCEL the account .... for 1 single $.75cent toll. Really Florida? THIS makes sense?

RE: Backsplash ... Install or NOT install?

Just to clarify ... we are doing this facelift in stages. When the granite was installed in Feb. 2011, it was too cold to cut tiles for the floor and backsplash. We are NOT installing granite backsplash, not a 4" strip or a full granite backsplash.
We are considering installing a travertine brick pattern that comes in 1 sq. ft. sections on a mesh backing. BUT we will still have to cut the stone in some areas to fit all the pieces. IF we do go with the travertine, it is about $11/sq ft. and from counters to bottom of cabinets is a big expanse and the $$ adds up. OR we can go with a very cost saving direction and paint the walls and thats that. We have NOT painted yet .... but it's part of the facelift.
Yes, it's a facelift .... it is NOT a whole kitchen remodel. We will not, for any reason, install new cabinets. If we're not getting our money back now, we'll never see a return on new cabinets. It'll look wonderful once finished .... and both bathrooms are getting an overall facelift as well.

RE: Backsplash ... Install or NOT install?

HI IRIS ... Boy do I miss you and your posts this past summer .... Thanks for the info/suggestion. I 'think' it will be fine ... but I don't want a buyer to be 'negotiating' DOWN by several thousand $$$s for a few hundred $$$ backsplash ... but this real estate market is a whole new ball game. : ? RE: Backsplash ... Install or NOT install?

wittmeba ... unfortunately ... today's buyer does NOT ... 'typically' 'accept'a 4" matching granite strip as a 'backsplash' these days. It is a full on, counter to bottom of cabinets backsplash. We 'were' planning a full on travertine brick pattern backsplash at $11.00/square foot. Kitchen is 25' long by 18' wide ... big kitchen. SO NOT doing the backsplash is saving a lot of money ....

RE: Backsplash ... Install or NOT install?

Good to know ... thanks. We've been told by realtors that the money we put into the house now ... we won't get back. What we 'MAY' get is a sale. SO ... knowing this, we aren't hiding any damage, we aren't cutting corners .... we're just trying to spend our money in the best/wisest places AND keep the spending to a minimum at this point.
New A/C a few years ago, NEW copper wiring (had aluminum .... aluminium for the UK descendents : ? ) ) New roof in 2009 ... new higher end, double pane windows in 2009, .... and on it goes. New 12' x 24' shed built in 2010. Also have an oversized attached 2 car garage. Sits on about 8 acres of land .... have been landscaping every year we've lived there .... lawn, sprinklers, trees, etc.. New deck and hot tub .... : ? ( Hate to move ... but gotta go where the money is .... and that seems to be Seatte right now.

Backsplash ... Install or NOT install?

We're giving our kitchen a facelift. New appliances were installed in 2009, done. New granite and sinks throughout the house (kitchen and 2 baths). Now we're ready to paint the cabinets and install the new tile floor.
Question is ...when you are buying a home ... IF there is NO backsplash installed (paint all the way to granite counters) do you NOT buy the house? Do you HAGGLE the price down because of it? OR do you see an opportunity to put your own taste/personlity in the home?

RE: Have you put in a new kitchen sink lately ?

GOOD call on the copper. It's a fad ... design shows are putting them in and they look great ... in the beginning. They ARE a lot of upkeep.
FYI ... we have a large single bowl stainless steel sink that I wouldn't trade for anything. Like Deb and Ed M ... I LOVE it ... it's huge and deep (and we have a disposer). Best thing we ever did along with the granite counters .... cabiets we'll paint white and install a new tile floor and paint the walls ... face lift complete. All new appliances purchased in 2009 ... so we're good there.
