RE: AC/DC Frame Grounding. Need help.

I want to offer my congratulations to all who contributed here. This is one of the best electrical help threads I have seen on RV.net.

RE: AC/DC Frame Grounding. Need help.

Salvo is giving you good advice. A lot of your confusion is due to terminology. On the DC bus you have a PLUS and MINUS. You ground the minus or negative to the frame. In the AC circuit you have HOT, NEUTRAL, and GROUND. You connect the ground to the frame. You do not connect the ground and neutral together in the trailer. You do connect the ground and neutral together at the generator as was described above with a dummy plug.

RE: Annual Spring Gathering @ Turning Stone, May 18-20th,2012

Sitting in the camper having coffee on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning at Turning Stone. Yet again another great gathering with old friends and new. Last night pot luck was once again, excellent. We missed all those who couldn't make it, especially Dave, as we had a project free weekend. Very unusal... We did try to modify a 350 Cat into a Cummins ISX but Jimmy wanted nothing to do with it. Rookie. :B Bruce, sorry we didn't make it, we were in Sevierville Tn, at an American Coach national rally. Interesting that Fleetwood, American Coach announced that they are switching from Spartan chassis to Freightliner for their American Coach line, and they will be offering the Detroit Diesel engine in the Eagle model. Freightliner had a display chassis on display with the DD engine and it looked nice. The DD has less horsepower, but more torque (read: more cubes). This is an interesting move for AC which will bear watching in the future to see if it is accepted by the customers. That is interesting. Newmar went to Freightliner for the Mountain Aire on down a year ago (Spartan still on the Essex up). At the time it was sugested that Freightliner still had some pre-emission engines left, making their chassis much less $$$ than a comparible Spartan - up to $25K less in some cases. Makes me wonder if thats the case with the DD's as well. Early in my business life, a mentor taught me that "all decisions are basically economic". I have found that to be true most of the time. I will say, in talking with the CEO of FCCC, their engineering program which is based on Solidworks modeling, is well suited to the new Fleetwood RV in that Fleetwood now also uses Solidworks. This also supports the Fleetwood quality program which is a big part of the new Fleetwood. Another interesting aside, the CEO of FCCC has been to 32 states in an RV. One would think he has an idea of what it is like to use one. :B

Jim, Jim, Jim: http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l34/mojorisintn/potmeetkettle.jpg With Florida State University (aka Free Shoes University) being one of the most penalized sports programs in the NCAA, indeed, who are you to judge??? By the way, MORE Florida State NCAA violations: Recent Florida State (aka Free Shoes University) NCAA violations And what does FSU say, "no comment". Well, they have that response down pat anyway. :h Larry's having a tough week. During geneology research in Tennessee, he found out that Linda is his sister. Then, today, the NCAA announced yet MORE infractions by that Ohio State University's football program. I'm not sure how much more he can take. :b Hope you's are all having fun and everyone's finally arrived safely. Great location.

RE: Gauge of wire for paralleling 12 Volt Batteries?

In your diagram, I see a symbol for a fuse at each of the battery + terminals but no fuse size is listed. The purpose of the fuse is to protect the wire. If you use #4 wire. Depending on acceptable voltage drop, you can probably get by with 60 or 70 amps through the #4, so you should therefore use a 60 or 70 amp fuse. Both batteries should use the same wire gage.

RE: Propane Generator convert to gasoline

Don't know if you can do it, but regarding the legality, I used to own a 1997 Coachmen diesel pusher, with a gasoline genset from the factory. Oh, and it had propane furnace and stove and frig. So much for that rumor.

RE: Fleetwood RV Tour

We took the tour a couple of years ago, but not since the new company took over. They do a nice job of guiding and you get to see a lot. We enjoyed it. You can probably park in the service area "campground" if it isn't full. You get 50 amp and there are two dump stations.

RE: Ground Fault Keeps Tripping

The simple answer is that you probably have a ground fault. Checking the cord with a meter will not find the problem. The GFCI outlet tests the amps on the hot wire and compares it with the amps on the neutral. If the difference is greater than 5 milliamps, the GFCI trips. Start by turning off the breakers in the RV, one at a time, until you can plug it in without tripping the breaker. Then start working on the circuit that is fed by that particular breaker.

RE: $100k Budget, Hydronic Heating, Quality Coach

American Coach, Newmar, any of the Monaco brands (i.e. Beaver, etc.), or Country Coach. Keep in mind that a couple of those mentioned did go bankrupt a couple of years ago, so warranty coverage is you problem. Don't go by the published price as in this market prices should and will be negotiable. Try PPL motorhomes website as they have a large selection.

RE: 2000 American Dream. Considering purchase..Your Thoughts

We have owned a 2000 American Tradition since 2005 and still love it. We just finished a 5000 mile trip through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, etc., towing our Jeep GC. We averaged around 8mpg, and enjoyed the trip all the way. Your Dream has more horsepower than our Trad, I believe 350 to 315 so you will have more power. There are several items that must be attended to on these motorhomes, particularly the hydraulic system which works the power steering and the side mount radiator cooling fan. It is not prone to failure, but must be serviced regularly. If you buy the coach, have it done unless the previous owner has service records. I strongly suggest you join the American Coach Yahoo forum as there are several folks there who own this and similar coaches and can provide a lot of help. Two known weaknesses were the basement compartment steel support framework which is prone to rusting, and the side mount radiator. When you do your inspection, lay on the ground and look at the bottom of the coach. Look closely at the frame around the basement compartments for rust, corrosion, and paint chipping. This is not a deal breaker, but a price negotiator. Regarding the radiator, many who own this vintage Spartan chassis have had to replace the radiator due to leaks, including me, last year. It can be expensive, labor intensive, and time consuming, but again, not a deal breaker, just a known repair item.

RE: Is it possable for my inverter/charger to over charge ?

Does your Discovery look anything like this? https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Eoaa5R6cv_w/TuaxFzUbc0I/AAAAAAAABDc/GV7APESPI5s/s640/2011-10-13_09-11-53_115.jpg If so, and you have a Xantrex charger, then the answer is yes, it is possible. This is a photo of a friend's 2007 that I just recently finished repairing. Although I never actually found the problem, I suspected the charger/inverter and replaced it during the repair. They had encountered several times when the batteries were dry and in my opinion, and with a good quality 3 stage charger, this shouldn't happen. It is something you need to look into.

RE: Anyone added Hose/connection For BBQ from propane tank?

Most folks who do this use a kit called, "Extend A Flow" for about $60. http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/lp-gas/extend-a-flow-kit.jpg Available from many sources, including PPL Motorhomes

RE: 1998 AMERICAN TRADITION C 8.3 L DIESEL

I just read that the electronic 8.3 was introduced by Cummins in 1998. You may be in luck. Certainly worth checking.

RE: 1998 AMERICAN TRADITION C 8.3 L DIESEL

"IF" it will work, I recommend the Silverleaf VMSpc package. You can contact them via their website: http://www.silverleafelectronics.com/ I have the package on my 2000 Tradition, but I have the electronic engine. You may have one too, just don't know for sure.

Never saw one that looked like that but my bet would be that you remove that black panel labeled "push to reset"
