RE: Why do I feel like appoligizing....??

If the OP was my wife, I'd say Jewish Guilt :) Seriously, if your friends are complaining about their miserable lives and you're out having fun, it's normal to have a little twinge. That doesn't mean you should feel guilty. We all make choices throughout our lives. Some allow us to enjoy life. Other choices tie us down to debt and struggle, trying to keep up. If you can afford to get out and have some fun camping or RVing, it just means you're doing something right.

RE: Terrible RV Crash in Phoenix

There is a video out by Michelin. I found it here. Watch it and you'll be better prepared. The instructions are counter-intuitive.

RE: Des Moines paper reporting attempted purchase of Winnebago

Doesn't matter what one financial analysist thinks, they closed at $8.66 Friday! Sure it does. The financial analyst (Morningstar) is pretty accurate in their valuations. Management would be fools to sell below a reasonable valuation regardless of what the stock is selling for at a given moment in time. If Wall Street took the offer seriously, the stock price would move a lot closer to the offer price and stay there. There was a bump, but it faded. Most analysts list the stock as a "buy" at the current price, meaning they expect the price of shares to go up. Morningstar's recommendation is to consider buying at $9.50 and consider selling at $33.30.

RE: STREET VIEW ON GOOGLE MAPS

Press and hold the location for a few seconds. An estimated address will come up. Tap on that and you'll see an option for street view. I have a question about Google Maps. How often do they update their views? I just looked a location and the aerial view is at least 6 months outdated. Then I looked at the street view and the picture is outdated by over 4 years. They're doing most of the populated world. I don't know their schedule, but four years isn't exactly ancient. Before people like Google, the satellite or aerial images for many areas were black and white images from the USGS circa 1990. I guess we're getting spoiled.

RE: Dish Network Question For Techies

Yes, one coax to the 722 will do. As I recall, you can use any of the three connections on the left. The far right one is for connecting a secondary satellite antenna.

RE: May be Switching to DirecTV - Info Needed

The lack of a DirecTV HD portable is . . . interesting to say the least. DirecTV HD uses Ka band and Dish uses Ku band for everything. That's why you won't be able to find a single LNB automatic dish that gets HD on DirecTV. For a portable, you'll need a tripod mounted multi-LNB dish. A Vu-cube or similar will get you SD only.

RE: Travelling from Los Angeles, CA to top of Washington State

Do you have a trailer or is the Suburban setup for towing? If not, plan on some added time and expense.

RE: Do I need a computer with my IPad?

This may have changed with the updates, but you did need a computer to connect to the iPad 2 to do the initial setup. The recent OS upgrades may have eliminated that requirement. Since you're already past the setup, you don't need a computer.

RE: What is the best tow car for a Class A

That's a bit like asking what's the best tasting food. Initially, we went with a dedicated toad, a Jeep Cherokee that was cheap. Later, we decided to go with something that was more suitable to daily needs too. We currently use a 2010 Grand Cherokee. Something like that might be on the heavy side for your coach, but there are plenty of options in lighter vehicles. There really isn't a "best" towable. You just have to figure our your needs or parameters, then find something that fits them and is towable. Places like FMCA and Motorhome magazine publish annual lists of vehicles that are towable four down. They have the lists available for the several years, so if you don't want something new, you can read the older lists.

RE: what tv channels are on which satellites

is there some way I can tune to it while I'm in Texas if my locals are in South Dakota. No, locals are generally on spot beams. If you're beyond the range of your locals, you're out of luck. You can't track down locals in a distant zip code without resetting your address with the provider. An analogy would be movie channels. If you don't subscribe to them, knowing the satellite and transponder won't do you any good.

RE: Has anyone used Slingbox?

It streams video out from a satellite or cable source. You can watch your home receiver, but it will take a lot of bandwidth and won't match the resolution of a local receiver. Over time, it's less expensive to run a tripod mounted dish. For convenience, it's hard to beat. I use a competitor, the Vulkano. Either will feed a computer, smart phone, iPad etc. for TV anywhere you have a connection.

RE: Need all you satellite TV gurus to put your heads together

Most, if not all, of the newer Dish receivers use one coax in to a splitter to the two satellite input connections. We have a 722, dual tuner receiver and that's what it uses. It probably depends on the antenna you're using. We have a roof mounted Winegard Trav'ler or a tripod mounted Dish 1000.2, and neither requires a second coax to the receiver. You might give it a try, then see if you want to upgrade equipment rather than run two cables. The 1000 has three outputs, but that's for feeding more than one receiver. It can feed three dual tuner receivers.

RE: sling box

Are you sure? As far as I know, Slingbox and Vulkano do not require a static IP. In fact, my home cable connection is not a static IP and my Vulkano works just fine.

RE: sling box

I've used a Slingbox Solo, then moved to a Vulkano with good results. The Vulkano seems to run even better on my Razr with a 3G connection here. I tested it in the car and there were only a couple of pauses in about 20 minutes. On a 4G connection, it would have been even better.

RE: Watch Satellite TV Programs Outside Your RV Wirelessly!

It's interesting, but I think a better overall solution is something like a Slingbox or Vulkano. They'll let you stream video to anywhere on many devices (computer, tablet, phone etc). They're generally a bit more expensive, but you don't have to be in the same zip code, state or country to use them. They also allow full control of the receiver. You can set the receiver to record or watch a recording as well as watching live TV.

RE: Safe wind speeds to drive in

If you have to ask (just kidding). Much depends on your comfort level and how well your coach handles wind. We took our first MH on a 3400 mile trip. The last day saw roughly a 40 mph crosswind. It wasn't fun and the 03 Excursion we had was a handful. Our 08 Tour did a lot better in winds, especially with sudden gusts. I don't know with our current Tour, but expect it'll be a bit better with the tag axle. I haven't run into any significant wind with it yet. If you go and it's too much, you can always find somewhere to wait. Prior to leaving, if you think it's too much for man and your machine, stay put and go another day. As they say in flying, "it's better to be down here wishing you were up there, than up there wishing you were down here."

RE: How the heck do I drive this dang thang?

I went from nothing larger than a crew cab pickup to our first motorhome (40'). It was intimidating initially. I drove it around some in town to get a feel for it, made some mistakes and watched some videos to help. Then I started making mental notes to check my position in the lane. On our current coach, I found a distinct part of the windshield wiper that is might limit for the right side of the lane. If I'm on a narrow road and need to move over, I know how far I can go. An example was when I was on a highway that went from four lanes to two narrow lanes. About that time a wide load came the other way. I got over as far as I could and we cleared. It was kind of a worst case scenario and worked out. Once you get a little time behind the wheel, it does get a lot easier.
