RE: budget cuts and public lands

I can't believe all the complaining. If you check with the Forest Service they will all tell you that they are at 100%Max efficiency and there is just simply nothing they can realistically cut to become more efficient. When in reality the F.S. is one of the biggest money wasters in the federal government outside of congress. They have increased fees, raised existing fees and still cry poor mouth. It is high time they were required to do more with less. Won't hurt them at all. A few good layoffs with some of those bureaucrats required to go out and get a real job would go a long way toward balancing budgets. The forests will by and large be fine. The public are not the ecological rapists the F.S. would like to make them out to be. The same thing applies to those clowns at the B.L.M. A good house cleaning and a round of budget cuts would help the cause there as well. Both of those organizations and many others have excess personell looking for something to do so they develope their cockamamie ideas and do their best to foist them off on the public. We need to wake up and put a stop to their nonsense. Jack.

Who cares? Just go and enjoy yourself. And don't forget to run your generator.

RE: Campground Etiquette

One nice thing about the BLM camping areas around Quartzsite is that Rules are few. Unfortunately someone will run across a grumpy know it all who is opposed to anyone else having a good time and taking advantage of the few and far between rules in that area. When we hear from one of those types and they swear they'll never be back it's music to our ears. One of the beauties of camping in the Quartzsite area is everyone does their thing from running their generator to congregating in one area with their respective groups to camping by themselves. That is just the way things have evolved there. But, Never fear you grumps have choices. You know what they are and they don't include confrontation.

RE: Buying an RV that has been full timed for 3 years

It is good to use a RV as we all know that just sitting aids deterioration. BUT, And it's a big BUTT. You don't want one that was lived in under any circumstances (it's worn out)especially after 3 years.

RE: advice for a new onan generator

You didn't mention the hours on the unit but being in a 98 model coach try this. Be sure the slip rings are clean and the brushes are free to move in the brush boxes. You may have a brush standing off of a slip ring creating the problem you are describing. Since you say it is out of the coach it will make it all the easier to check. A 5KW Onan is to good a unit to throw in the towel on without a good complete diagnosis. Jack.

RE: How to make a small septic tank.

Go down to your local fuel and oil jobber and purchase 2 55 gal. steel drums. Perforate them generously with anything from a sharp pick to a 1" hole saw. Fit them out on the top with 3"-4" plastic Pipe firmly attached to the drums. Makt the same arrangement on the side of each drum near the top so the drums can be connected with a 3"-4" plastic section of pipe. Length to be determined by you and as needed. Bury the drums so the soil covers the tops. Cut off the vertical inlet pipes to suit your needs close to the ground and install threaded caps. No more often than what you are going to use this system a field leach line would probably be optional. This would not be a high volumn system with no leach line (s). This is a private project on private property and mums the word. I would purchase materials out of town. The fewer who know about the job the better. Once you have entered the bureaucratic nightmare of government on something like this they will jerk you around until you won't know whether you were punched or bored. I have several of these systems in service at various locations, some as old as 22 years old up to and including1 less than a year old. This is what is known as the old Hill Billy Dump and they work well for light usage. I love it everytime this subject comes up and all screamers come out of the woodwork. Go for it.

RE: Spare tires

Mine did not come with a spare and I don't carry one because I couldn't change a tire due to the size and weight. So far I have had remarkable service from my tires with only 1 call for a flat. Was back on the road within an hour.

Don't forget the 0-1" micrometer. It is a great C-clamp for small projects.

RE: Offensive Good Sam Advertising

Just take your black felt tip marker and mark it REFUSED/RETURN To Sender, and put it back in the mail for the Postman to return. The original sender(GoodSam) will have to pay the return postage.

RE: Nominate the worst highways for Motorhomes

There are no worst highways for motorhomes. Just drive the road in accordance with conditions and enjoy a safe trip and be grateful you can do it. Jack.

RE: Wiper Arm

As a temporary fix you can try and dress up the serrations with a small 3 cornered file. After doing this the shaft will probably be a few thousandths of an inch undersize so use some thin foil (like from the back of a gum wrapper) to wrap around the shaft to fill the void. It might only need a partial wrap to ensure a snug fit. At best it will be temporary. Check at truck parts stores and at truck salvage yards for good parts. Jack.

RE: New to Class A Pusher - Questions

Hopefully all of the various factory manuals will have been left in the coach. If they are available to you they will answer all of those questions. Good Luck. Jack.

RE: $850.00 Christmas present

Someone has seen you coming to ask a price like that for that kind of small 12 volt motor. If you have time and can get the nameplate data off of the bad motor, with that, shop around at shops that sell small low voltage motors and shop the internet. Don't pay that price until you have looked around. Jack.

RE: Route 17 between Phoenix and Flagstaff AZ.

There are no grades steeper than 6%. From the Verde to the top of the rim it is a steady pull up. Right now it is snowing and 17 gets slicker than a greased pig. Slowing down and driving cautiously usually works. The problem is, there are those that will not slow down and end up wrecked and causing wrecks until D.P.S. gets all they can handle and then they close the road. Then no one moves; and this goes on for hours before the road is re-opened. Jack.

RE: Quartzsite R.V. Services

I have used all of those outfits on the list but one. I do not get fresh water from any of them. I get water in town. Much cheaper. Everybody uses these waste services and when they are in your area and are noticed folks approach them from all directions. Regarding not using their fresh water service: They are certified by the various county health departments and the fresh water is on a separate vehicle. I cannot recall seeing both services provided from a single vehicle. Jack.

RE: Oven wont light

It is hard to help with the limited info you have provided. At least give us a clue as to the vintage of the unit as that will determine how the oven burner is lit. Some of the older units required a standing pilot and when the oven knob was pushed in and held in for a few seconds the pilot flame would enlarge heating the tube allowing gas to flow to the burner and be lit by the enlarged pilot flame.
