RE: A/C servicing

Clean it and check for air / water leaks. These are not serviceable I've been told bye 3 techs and several other campers .. Unless its electronics the "freon" can't be serviced it leaks it's junk. I just replaced mine last year.
Ditto all prior poster does.

RE: insurance experience

Yes no reason to wait .. You'll get a refund on your existing policy from the day you cancel it. Shop around. I've heard that anyone who hasnt shopped their insurance in 3 years Is probably paying too much. Whenever I do ( shop my insurance ) I find another co that always seems to beat the prior lowest. Remember you are betting you will crash and need them to pay out they are betting you won't ! they aren't your friend like they want you to believe.
It's a contract for payment. Don't like the contract ? Find someone else.

RE: CC Whats it worth?

Hurt is a relative amount How much pain is too much .. On a high level MH you will lose a bunch in 4 years. Price a 2002 today ( a 4 year older coach )and compare and you can figure the loss more closely. On a $250 coach a loss of at least25 grand a year ( decreasing ) is not unexpected.I believe once it goes beyond 10 years the Value will drop more drastically as Loans become difficult
A full inspection By a Cat/ Allison facility even at your expense would be minimum requirement if no records are available. Its being sold for a reason good news for you if it was a "retirement" from the ability to use the coach, not a mechanical reason

RE: Best flat screen TV for motorhomes

We are going to replace our older tube style TV with a flat screen in our Winnebago Journey. Will the LED/LCD TV's endure RV vibrations and extreme cold and hot temperatures during storage? We see the flat screens in the newer RV's and wonder how much of an issue it is.
Its not, LCD ( traditional Florescent backlit) or LCD LED $$$ ( LED backlit) is your only choice !! plasma isn't made in anything less than 42" and I doubt you can fit anything near that size in a RV. LCD's are no more susceptible to Vibration than the circuits in your old tube tv. BTW At any Tv less than 40" a 720p will do just fine, and most people cant tell the difference!! They are getting harder to find though and 1080 is becoming the standard just a little more expensive. Have you seen the Off brand Tv's the Manufactures are putting in Rv's ?? in many cases its the cheapest set they can buy.Just make sure its mounted securely!! Falls on any Tv aren't good ;)

RE: Can't remove a/c covers

Soft vinyl winter covers ? The elastic bottom stretches unless they've become old .. In that case cut them off and replace them they are cheap. If your talking about the hard plastic cover that's screwed on .. Remove the screws and slide forward or back ( I cant remember ) then lift front or rear off first .
If your looking for water leaks you won't see much the seal is covered by the base plate .youll see more from inside. If your talking about freon leaks again nothing to see here .. Besides the aren't generally reparable .. Replace the whole unit. ???

RE: Ordering a New Motorhome, What To Do With The Trade-in

No matter what your taking a Bath if your trading in a 1 year old coach ? of that price range but then it may not matter to you.:( Prices can be compared your current coach wholesale price vs discounted new coach or current coach retail vs FULL retail on the new coach. I doubt they care your using it since they will be making Big $$ off you anyway as long as you dont trash it. I would try to sell it myself in the 6 months before to offset at least some of the loss.
Hope the new coach is what you want so you dont have to do this again!

RE: actually a part-timer question...

For the past five years we have been on the road for 5, 6 or 7 months at a time. Our insurance agents were fully aware of this (in fact, we paid them while on the road). They had no problems with it.
Be careful .. The agent can claim ignorance Its the "insurance company and the printing on the policy that matters. The "agent" only wants your business and knows when the "real" numbers for insuring an empty house ( 4x my actual rate in my case) are given to you the shock wont be good for that "business" ;-)

RE: Best Buy sales gimick...... or not?

Do you need it ?? Are you a videophile ?? Calibration is real and it really can cost 300. - 400 bucks .. They use a device ( colorimiter ) sp to measure the screen color accuracy. Would I trust best buy "kids" to do it ? No ! most people should buy the calibration disk and follow the instructions . They won't notice the difference from the pros . But there is a difference. Takes the right eye. Heck most people use "dynamic " ( super bright showroom setting) on the tv and just using movie or similar setting would be a good improvent!

RE: Tires--How old until replacement?

Usually tires will start getting small cracks on the side walls after five years. It is time to change them.
Some will wait longer and take a chance of a blow out, and they cause a lot of damage to the wheel well costing thousands of dollars. To me it is not worth it being cheap and not changing them every five years.
I agree you are risking increased chance of failure but new tires can have a defect and fail also. Besides ,aside safety issues ( front tire blowout at speed) insurance covers my damage not me .. That's why I buy insurance but that's just my take .

RE: Columbia River Area The Dalles

Somewhat related, after traveling thru the Dalles+ heading for Cannon Beach, what is the drive like thru Portland to hook up with highway 26,out to the coast? Driving a 43 ft.MH+ pulling a toad. Also what is highway 26 like for doing so?
Thanks
Clearly marked .. Stay on the freeways 84 to I5 south, over the bridge immediate ( while still on the bridge) exit to I405 North and a quick exit to the HWY 26 exit to Beaverton. Some alternate ways take you downtown .. doable (city buses do it all the time) but the freeway rte is less stressful. 26 is a major HWY 6 lanes then 4 then down to 2 as you go over the coast Mtn range.

RE: Columbia River Area The Dalles

Ft Stevens is the largest state park in Oregon and is packed on weekends in the summer. Reservations unless already made might be hard to come by. There are many parks and pvt resorts on the Oregon coast . Since you already came down 101 you probably know that already. The air museum in mcminville is worth the side trip.

RE: Not again

Losing a debit card is much worse than loosing a checkbook.please explain.A credit card has a $50 limit of liability for fraudulent use. A debit card has unlimited liability until you notify the bank. In other words, a bad guy can go to Walmart and clean out your bank account in minutes, long before you notice the card is missing. The thief doesn't even need to know your PIN, they can just ask the transaction be ruFn as "credit" instead of debit, and an educated guess will work on any question for a ZIP code. Usually getting the first three digits will work.
Think your account can't be cleaned out quickly? Have you priced a big screen TV or a new set of tires lately?
They would need to have your pin number to be used as a debit card and even then most banks follow similar rules as credit cards .. If the debit card is used as a "credit " card .. Signature req .. Then credit riles apply . At least where I bank that's the way it works .. You should check yours . Checks are used as debit cards most places they scan them in and take the cash right then and in many cases hand you your check back . Switch to a card less hassle ( I hate being behind a check user ) and easier to replace if lost.

RE: New motorhomes and no oven

I was told by a salesman that the Ovens on the units with both the convection microwave and oven also models come back on trade ins virtually unused ( the Gas oven). Most part timers and many full timers have no interest in using it. So i guess if you really use it your special .. in the minority that is. ;-) they'd rather have the storage space

RE: antennas and signal

I think this statement is wrong but hey that is just my opinion
"there is no such thing as a digital TV antenna. the antenna is designed to detect a range of frequencies only. digital, analog, standard def, high def...it's all the same to the antenna. "
television antennas are designed to detect a specific range of frequencies, not a transmission mode. if you live in a primary service zone you can use just about any kind of antenna on a TV set. at home i use an old UHF vertical ham radio antenna...abt 6-inches long...on my HDTV in the radio shack. works like a champ. there are many places that will try and sell you either a digital TV antenna or an antenna that has been "optimized" for HD. like the dodo bird they do not exist. HD is a function of the set itself, not the antenna. a 50-year old TV antenna that has all of it's elements will receive digital signals just fine.
X2 "digital" antenna is snake oil to the "unwashed masses" sounds good but any VHF/UHF antenna for the distance you are from the tower will work antenna selection site

RE: antennas and signal

Ok basics..... first raise the antenna turn on then rotate the antenna to the correct compass direction use the web site Antennaweb. Org To figure out where that is
if your not pointing the antenna to the station you will get zip on UHF band

RE: Internet on Fire or Nook color

If you want a good reader a e ink kindle / for 70 bucks is the way to go! But no useabe internet a fire / nook can do both but it's not ideal for either .....reading is ok but some complain of eye strain looking at the LCD screen as far as a web surfer its fair. I have a fire and use it for limited reading and some surfing. If your comfortable with playing with and fixing computer " problems " then hacking can offer a "fun way " to play with the device. And make "improvements". If you can afford a double the price solution the iPad is far away the better choice. A great reader ( not in sunlight .. No LCD is) and fast Internet. With tons of interesting aps ... What's your computer frustration level ?
I gave up fixing computer problems .. I use the fire as is . And my apple products just work and I don't ask them to do more than they can.

RE: Want to change florescent ceiling lights to LED

I cannot understand the push to have LED lights. I understand that if one does a lot of boondocking getting rid of the old fashioned auto bulb fixtures might be a good idea. But the flourescents are a T8 bulb and give off a tremendous amount of light. Every conversion I have seen either had strange colors or not enough lumens. Unless you step up and buy good LEDS they die quickly.
Moisheh
X2 unless you boondock a lot I would see it as a waste of $ to convert unless you just want to to be saying you did ( gotta have the latest and greatest )
