RE: Cleveland GA to Crossville TN

Thanks everyone. How is US-76 from Elijay west to join US-411 south of Chatsworth? If we do end up going through Chattanooga we'll be doing the US-27/TN-111/US-127 route; done that a few times with no issues.

RE: Cleveland GA to Crossville TN

Thanks folks; I was looking at the Cumming to I75 route. I might take more than Xanax. LOL

Cleveland GA to Crossville TN

Hi folks. I need to get from Cleveland GA to Crossville TN in a relatively unexciting manner to accomodate the DW. We drove down US 129 over Blood Mountain and her feet were tingling so apparently that route is out. I don't see a lot of ways to get west to head north. DW grew up in Leslie County Kentucky with Mom hollerin "He's gonna kill us!" so I can only accomodate her... I drove to Hyden and I thought "I'm gonna kill us...." Scary stuff. I've already suggested that we do it at night so she can't see down the mountains. Didn't go over too well.

RE: North Georgia Mountains

Unicoi is easy to get to from Helen; some other parks may be more..interesting.

RE: Anyone have experience with Portable Ice Makers?

We've been running it 24/7 for about two years. Works as advertised. "Prime" it with a quart baggie of ice and it'll produce right away; if not, it'll take a while but if you start it at noon you'll certainly have a basket of ice by early happy hour. This is an ice-maker, not an ice-storer, so if you want bags you'll have to store them in your freezer. You could churn out a respectable amount of ice if you wanted to babysit the process. Highly recommended.

RE: RV Park in Savannah, Georgia

We stayed at Red Gate for several days a couple of weeks ago; it was ok and the staff was helpful and nice. The property's actually huge and things are somewhat spread out. The usual RV sites are in a field, no privacy or shade, but there's a few more-private shady "premium" sites. If you want to do the trolley tours (we did, no toad) have the CG folks call Old Town Trolley Tours a day ahead and they'll pick you up at the CG. So we'll give Red Gate a recommendation. Also... We had a chance to ride through Biltmore RV Park on US 17 a couple of miles away from Red Gate. It's a fairly small park, appears well-kept, and folks we talked with liked it fine. One advantage is that not only will Old Town Trolley pick you up, there's a city bus stop right nearby the CG so you could take the bus into town and return whenever you want rather than the 9am and 4pm times the trolley runs. This is a noisy area; there's US 17 and another connecting highway, a train and constant helicopter noise from Hunter Army Air Field.

RE: Tomoka State Park FL

You might consider Ft. Clinch SP at Fernandina Beach. Plenty of nature and touristy things to do, nice little town and no bad traffic. The sand gnats are ferocious in the southeast this year because we've no winter; Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil works well to keep them off.

RE: FULL TIME IN A CLASS C

We are, and we're well under our max of around 11,500 pounds. It depends on how much junk you think you need to carry around.

RE: Big rig friendly Savannah GA.

Red Gate Farm can handle any size rig. It definitely isn't a resort, more like a field, but there's plenty of room plus clubhouse etc. Most important for us who have no toad is that Old Town Trolley will pick up and return to the CG.

RE: What did you do to your Class C MH today???

I got the DW past the CW outside of Savannah.

RE: Why do many restaurants make unsatisfactory meals ?

It's a complicated question but I think it's in part governed by homogenization of tastes and an effort to keep prices comparatively low. For example, we went out for breakfast at a place that was reputed and reviewed to be better than average but for our one visit it was smack-dab average. Just like a Huddle House or Denny's. It easily could have been much better with some seasoning but the downside is that many people probably would complain about the spicy food, so although the ingredients were fine they simply weren't used very well. That's the homogenization issue. I believe that generally speaking Americans have been led to prefer bland salty food. We're in a major port city, shipping port and seafood port. There's _no reason_ to put tilapia or salmon on a menu here other than that they're cheap and it's assumed that customers won't know any difference between those and local fresh-off-the-boat seafood. They aren't cheaply priced, they're just cheap ingredients.

RE: Heading up to the lake tomorrow!

You might try sail repair tape from West Marine and other suppliers.

RE: Grill Cleaning Brushes

Here you go: http://toolwizard.com/store/index.cfm/product/30_1/tool-wizard-grill-brush.cfm I use a couple of them. Of course you can find replacement steel or stainless steel pads for cheap.

RE: Non Smoking Campground areas

Although I understand what you're saying is the next step "no frying?" No fish cooking, and for God's sake none of those unspeakably foul campfires. And those teenagers who stunk up the showerhouse with Axe should be banned. Sad to say, but perhaps you should find something else to do.

RE: How long does your propane tank last?

If you're using it only for refrigeration, cooking and the water heater it'll last seemingly forever. If you're running the furnace it might last a tremendously shorter time. You'll have to determine these things yourselves because everyones' usage is different.

RE: What did you do to your Class C MH today???

I guess this is preliminary...tomorrow I'm going down to A1A Hardware to buy some chain. The hitch mount is breaking away from the chassis extension on this rustbucket and the obvious solution is to chain it up so that even if it breaks it isn't going to fall off in the road. The silly angle is that there's only a 140# grill on the hitch carrier. We need only to get about another 500 miles. So.... on our old rustbucket we have a chassis extension about four feet long culminating in a bumper. Unfortunately the extension was a closed channel rather than an I-beam and it trapped water over all the years. I gather the fix is to have someone cut it off past the rust and do some welding? OTOH if we get to Georgia in one piece we don't care whether or not we have a bumper... Geez....I'm a hillbilly. There's something a little different about keeping a 25-year-old motorhome alive....

RE: Seasonal Site Convenience vs. Campgrounds?

We use a couple of seasonal sites as our bases and make expeditions from them. We really aren't interested in making jaunts of thousands of miles at a time but we'll probably select different seasonal sites as time passes. Our winter seasonal site is monthly rental, no lease, and we stay for three months or so; the summer seasonal site is yearly lease and it's so inexpensive that it's no big deal those few months we're gone. Before signing a lease or spending money on something you can't carry with you, a deck for example, do everything you can to check out the financial stability of the CG. If it goes under or dramatically changes you may still be on the hook for the lease.

Please folks, solid FG roof and FG caps and glass 'em together.

RE: Show your grills

Well...We currently have a large BGE on the back rack and a little Weber. When we hit our home park in N. Ga. we'll have the Egg, a Weber bullet, a Weber Performer and a La Caja China. Do we win something? Oviously we love to cook. Maybe that's why we're fat folks?
