RE: Any Scrollers out there?

Like you, I sold my wood shop when got divorced and just kept the basics that I could carry in the RV... also about $9000 or $10,000 worth..
Still have my tabletop scroll saw..(the floor mount model was to big and heavy to keep)..
...as well as some hand tools and basic portable power tools like Worm Saw, Routers, Drills, Shaper, Sanders, Nail Guns, etc.....
And still have dozens of patterns but can't find time to set up the saw and do the scrolling.
One of these days I'll get a "Round2it" ..:B :B

RE: Instrumental favorites

I love instrumental music and love almost any music from the "Big Band" era...
Tommy Dorsey
Jimmy Dorsey
Glen Miller
Red Nickles
Harry James
Lawrence Welk
Spike Jones
Ahhhhhhh.. now that was real music..... you could dance to it, sing to it, smooch to it, or just do absolutely nothing but lay back and listen to it..
in addition to instrumental music,...
I also like "True" Country music from the 1920's, 30's, 40's and 50's.. including some Blue Grass ..
but there has not been much of what I consider true country music since the mid 60's..
and of course I like the "Real" Rock-n-Roll from the 1950's... but the "Noise" that today's kids call Rock-n-Roll is definitely NOT Rock-n-Roll.
The term "Rock-n-Roll" refers to the "Dance" that the kids performed to the "Rock-a-Billy" music of the late 1940's through the 1950's and into the early 60's..
The Rock-a-Billy music eventually became known as "Rock-n-Roll" music thanks to a disc jocky named Allen Freed.. who coined the phrase in the early 1950's during a dance-a-thon in Philadelphia.. he was referring to the way us kids were dancing to the music...
and as has been mentioned.. there were some beautiful instrumental music from the 1950's/60's ... like "Summer Place" ....
and don't forget the theme from the movie "Bridge on River Kwai"...
as a kid I could whistle the entire theme flawlessly as I walked to high school each morning.. much to the amusement of our neighbors .. :B :P
Some more trivia...
Did you know that if it had not been for Country Singer Carl Perkins and his Rock-a-billy style of singing.. the world would likely have never heard of a guy named Elvis Pressley..
Carl Perkins was in a terrible car accident which layed him up for several months and the "Colonel" put Elvis on in Perkin's place ...
... Elvis sang Carl Perkin's song "Blue Suede Shoes".. it was that song that started Elvis's career ..
as always.. this is just my opinion and to each their own.. :B

RE: Anybody grow their own ?

absolutely... I have tomatoes coming out my ears and the bell peppers are huge...
The Indian corn is only 7 stalks but has 15 ears on them..
Carrots are sweet and crispy... and the green onions are over two feet tall and taste fantastic...
and lets not forget the radishes... spicy and crunchy..
NOW ... YOU READY FOR THIS ???... all of them except the corn are growing in Flower Pots setting around the driveway...
.... because I don't have any "Yard" for a regular garden here in the old folks mobile home park.. it's mostly asphalt and concrete..
I just picked several tomatoes a few minutes ago and earlier I picked bell peppers and carrots for my pasta salad mixture..

RE: Do You Sleep on an Air Mattress?

Hows about feedback from people who have used a "Plain" air mattress? I'm talking about the simple ones that blow up with air & then you can let the air out to drop the top (if you have a folder).
Thanks
That's type air mattress I was talking about in my post Tom... those that Walmart and kmart sell...

RE: Saran Wrap in the Oven?

hummmnnnnnn.... ????
Foil... ?
Plastic Wrap... ?
Turkey Bags... ?
Parchment Paper... ?
I don't understand why anyone would spend money on those things ...
when they can use something that does the same job, if not better, and they can get for FREE .. I'm talking about .....
the ordinary ... "Brown Paper Bag" ... that they put your groceries in at the grocery store..
My mother used those large size "Grocery Bags" for roasting almost everything.. turkeys, chickens, roast beef, hams...etc..
and they do an excellent job of keeping the moisture in the meat and allowing the meat to brown nicely..
Simply place your meat inside the brown bag with whatever spices (etc) you want and then close the bag and use a couple of paper clips to hold the bag closed..
NO... it will not catch fire at normal temperatures between 300 and 375 degrees
NO... it will not transfer any color, smell or taste to the meat
YES... the meat will come out nice and juicy
YES... the meat will brown nicely inside the bag**..
**. for a "Crusty" skin on the fowl or on the outer layer of roast or ham.. simply cut bag open about 20 minutes before removing the meat from the oven..
My Mother used those bags, her Mother used those bags and I use those bags when preparing my Thanksgiving Turkey and Christmas Ham..
What's that "Mikey" says in those old commercials...?
... "try it, you'll like it" .... :P :B

RE: Do You Sleep on an Air Mattress?

Do You Sleep on an Air Mattress?
only one time in my life... and never will again... it was without a doubt the worse thing I've ever tried to get comfortable on..
and same goes for those "Foam" mattresses that people pay big money for.. they are totally disgusting to try and sleep on..
More than once over the years while visiting friends or family I have chosen to sleep on the floor beside the bed rather than try to sleep in it..
That "Cloth Top, Queen Size " air mattress was so "slick" and "bouncy" that I kept sliding out of bed..
and that expensive "Memory Foam" bed that my in-laws bought after seeing it advertised on television.....
(where the people are jumping up and down on the bed trying to spill a glass of wine)..
.... was like sleeping in a rubber crock pot.. hot, sweaty, smelly and the feeling of being suffocated by the foam "contouring" to my body.. YUK !!
If I can't sleep on a "regular" mattress, then I'll sleep on the floor.
but please remember...this is just my personal feelings on air and foam mattresses and I respect other folk's opinions,, I just won't sleep on their air or foam mattress...... :B :B :P

RE: Best Stove Top Coffee Pot

When you stop and think about it... there is no such thing as "Instant Coffee" or "Instant Anything" that requires hot water to make..
because you will always need the time required for the water to reach a boiling temperature.. :B :B
and of course that will depend on several things..
* size of water container,
* amount of water in container,
* altitude, ...(high altitude takes longer)
* amount of heat (BTUs)
* type of heat (source)..
(microwave, gas flame, wood flame, oil flame, electricity, etc..)
Here is what I use when camping or when I only want one cup of coffee in the middle of the night..
The old aluminum coffee pot has seen better days but still works great and can brew 8 to 10 cups of coffee in the time it takes for the water to boil..
The "MELITTA" individual cup coffee maker makes a great cup of coffee, also in the time it takes for the water to boil.

RE: Cigarette lighter power for dsl modem

Ahaaaa.... now I understand Brian ...
you already have the dedicated phone line and just wanted to use power directly from RV 12 volt system instead of 110 adapter...
The idea sounds good... but I would still check out the amperage and make sure the DSL router's required amperage is the exact same amount coming from the battery..
and remember that a "12 volt" battery is not "12 volts" when the engine is running...
it's more like 13 to 15 volts because the alternator puts out a higher voltage to charge the battery..
Of course the Vehicle's voltage regulator should allow the cig lighter to remain 12 volts..
but if the cig ligther is connected to the "Hot Wire" that feeds the fuse panel, the ligter "Could" recieve a higher voltage when the engine is running..
but I would definitely test the lighter receptor before plugging in the router.. just for your peace of mind.. :B
remember that old saying.. "Better safe than sorry"..
Good luck and come back to let us know it your plan is successful.

RE: Cigarette lighter power for dsl modem

hummmnnn.... well to start with............
According to the phone company, DSL service is NOT just simply plugging the DSL router to just any ol' phone line...
The DSL router needs a special "dedicated" pair of phone wires that are installed by phone company...
You are not likely to find that in any RV park, campground, or other RV related park...
As for the power supply... check the "AMPS" from the RV battery against the AMPS the DSL router needs to operate on...
if they don't match.. be prepared to buy a new DSL router..
But as always.. this is just my opinion and to each his own..
best wishes,
John

RE: cheap phone?

To answer the question ..."Do I qualify for Life Line" ?
Here is the info from AT&T information pamphlet that comes with my monthly bill .....
Mostly it's based on your income..as of Oct 2010, the max yearly income level for ...
* 1 person is $18,953.00
* 2 people is $25,498.00
* 3 people is $32,043.00
* 4 people is $38,588.00
* for each additional person, add... $6,545.00
There are other things that may effect your eligibility, so you need to call your phone company and ask about the "Lifeline" program..
Also, there is a FREE cell phone program for eligible income people..
Look up "Safelink.com" on the web and check it out.. it's a little harder to meet the income levels ...

RE: cheap phone?

Three questions:
Do you have to provide proof of income & other paperwork from time to time for the Lifeline service?
Mountain Mama I've had it so long (10 years +/-) that I don't remember if I filled out any paperwork or not..
My MIL had something but it was about $15/mo and she had to do a lot of paperwork for it.
Where/how do you have a Trackphone for $3.33/mo???
Please read the reply (below) I gave a couple of days ago about my tracfone cost
How do you have internet service?
DSL with ATT..cost $19.99 per month
********************* previous post *******************************
Hi CAPT....
You and many forum members probably already know how Tracfone works , but for those folks who don't I am explaining it for them..
I switched from ATT to Straight Talk and then to Tracfone..
Because both ATT and Straight Talk charged by the month for a certain amount of minutes.. but I never used anywhere close to the minutes allowed...
For the past six years I have averaged about 15 minutes a month on my cell phone.. it's more for emergency use than daily use..
On July 7,2011 ... I bought a cheap LG phone ($29.99) and a 60 minute card ($19.95).. from Walmart.
When I activated the phone and installed the 60 minute card.. it gave me a total of 140 minutes of time .... AND....
Here is the best part....
I have until January 7, 2012 before I need to buy and install more minutes on the phone.. 6 MONTHS...
$19.95 card divided by 6 months ... $3.33 per month
All Tracfone phones automatically "Double" the minutes when installed into the phone....
example:.. 60 min card = 120 min .... 200 min card = 400 min...
AND.... you have 3 months (or more) before you must install more minutes..
This means you only need to "recharge" your tracfone with more minutes 4 times a year..
...of course if you use up all of the minutes before the time limit ends you must buy more minutes ..
AND.... if you buy and install more minutes before the end date. any minutes left over from the last period are "Rolled Over" into the next 90 day period..
Let's say you buy 60 minutes (x2=120) every three months and only use 20 minutes during that time period...
...the remaining 100 unused minutes are added onto the next period when you install another 60 minutes card.....
So you will have 60 x 2 = 120 + 100 = 220 minutes to use during the new time period...
and it goes on and on... in a years time you could theoretically have somewhere around a thousand minutes accumulated..
another bonus with Tracfone... you can send 3 text messages for the cost of only ONE minute of time...
So far I like Tracfone and the simplicity of adding minutes when needed..
Plus the LG450G phone is connected to all of my computers and my hands-free system in the car via blue tooth..
Hope this helps anyone thinking about getting a Tracfone... and hope it answered your question about the $3.33 cost I talked about Capt..
Best Wishes,
John

RE: Printer Problem

If you haven't already tried it.. disconnect the printer completely.. from the computer..
then go into the "Control Panel" / "Add & Remove" and delete the entire printer program.
Then re-install the printer per installation instructions..
I know it's a PITA.. but maybe that will re-establish the communication between printer and computer..
good luck,
John

RE: cheap phone?

CALL YOUR LOCAL PHONE COMPANY AND ASK FOR "LIFE LINE"...
AT&T and "Most" other phone companies have the Federal program called ..."LIFELINE"..
Lifeline is just a regular basic land line phone like folks have in their home...
LifeLine allows unlimited LOCAL calls ... but it does NOT allow *Long Distance calls..
(* which is why I have my $3.33 per month TRACFONE for long distance calls)
The monthly cost for my Lifeline is .....
Flat Rate ......................... $ 4.83
9-1-1 Emergency System ....... .25
Fed. Tax ............................... .26
Local Tax .............................. .35
Total per month ................... $ 5.69
The total cost for BOTH of my phones together... landline and cellular, cost me less than $10 per month..

RE: Inexpensive DIY WiFi Booster??

Now I need to study up on how to put the cord through the roof without leaks.
I would suggest NOT putting a hole in the roof... instead, run the cable through a small hole in the side of the RV.. up close to the ceiling...
The closer to the roof/ceiling you make the exit hole ... the less "Flapping in the wind" and excess wear on cable and outside paint of RV..
It's easier to patch a hole in a "wall" than in a "roof"..
a hole in the roof can develop a leak over time with the movement and flexing of the RV as it moves down the road..
I ran my antenna cables through an overhead cabinet and then drilled a small hole in the back wall from inside the cabinet so the cables would exit next to the roof ladder, where I mounted the antenna with clamps..
thus, no holes in roof and no cables/holes showing inside RV.....
Best wishes on whatever you decide..

RE: Smoke Alarm rated for use in RV's

About 14 years back -+, I payed $10 for a "twin-Pac" of smoke alarms from a store going out of business..
Each detector use a 9vt battery that normally last about two years before the alarm starts "Chirping" and I replace the battery..
I have used these same two detectors in *three different RVs over the years.... *(40' 5th wheel, 36' motor home and 30' 5th wheel)
and I still have and use these same detectors in my home today ..one in the hallway and one in the bedroom.
In each of the RVs I placed one detector in the bedroom area and the other one in the central area comprised of living room, dining room and kitchen..
Once in awhile I would forget to "Open" the lid on that one and it would go off when I cooked something..
To turn off the alarm I simply opened the lid and when through cooking .. close the lid..
So as to needing a "Special RV Detector"... I say baloney... a detector is a detector.. and "Name brands" mean nothing to me except higher prices..
although I do recommend getting the "Dual" sensor models as some others have posted..
and of course, this is just my personal opinion and to each their own.. :B

RE: Google Talk phone number

Thanks 1492...
If I get "Caller ID" it will add yet another charge to my home phone bill..
and I'm already paying $9.26 for the home phone..
phone................. 4.83
non-published ........ 3.50
911 .................. .25
Fed Tax............... .26
Local tax ............ .42
Then add the cost of the DSL ..$19.95 .... and my home phone cost me almost $30 per month
Then there is the cell phone.. it cost $3.33 per month
The cost of the cell phone is not too bad, but the high price for my home phone and DSL is killing me because my Social Security check only stretches so far..
Since Google and other types of "Alternate" phone service like Magic Jack, will require a land line for them to work...none of them will likely solve my problem with unwanted calls.
but anyway, Thanks,
John
