RE: Necessary Tools?

A few feet of Eternabond tape can be handy. I also carry a small plastic tarp and have used it on the ground when I need to crawl underneath.

RE: Trigonometry and fivers

I have to agree, the pivot will be the center between the tires, making the angle a little more. I'd guess you can make that much adjustment by raising the hitch in the truck and still be safe but it would be a lot better if you can get it level at the desired clearance.

RE: diary/ journal format

We don't blog but keep spreadsheets for travel and budget. I also keep a journal and a record of all maintenance. It's surprising how often we refer back to those records and it's easy to customize them to your needs.

RE: Command Hooks

We use a few of them for lightweight items but use industrial strength Velcro for heavier pictures. We use the sticky back kind and add a few staples for good measure. We had one fall off once before the staples. Museum wax as already mentioned, is great for whatnots.

RE: Miffed at Camping World

I recently bought a Winegard Carryout antenna from Camping World online. It was the best price I had found anywhere and online it was at the same as President's Club price with free shipping and no sales tax.

RE: Broken leaf spring -- narrowly escaped disaster

Two years ago I had all four snap at one wheel while crossing the Mississippi Bridge from Memphis to Arkansas. There was a resonant bounce as we crossed and it seems that they did break at nearly the same time. After getting a temporary relacement installed, we stopped at Little Rock and I phoned Lippert. They were willing to send me replacements and even allowed upgrade to a stronger set (6 leaf) at no charge. I later paid to upgrade the axles from 6000 to 7000 lb. That took new hubs, brakes and wheels so I also got a new set of tires. It was worth every penny.

RE: Escapees/Livingston question

Texas does require an annual inspection BUT if you are out of state, you don't have to get the inspection until you are back in Texas. I think the window is within ten days of coming back in state but not sure on that. I'd keep a receipt from the last campground before coming back in case you are checked.

RE: Compressor Choice

Mine is on the lower end of things but has worked reliably for eight years now. It is a $90 Husky from Sears. It only has a 1 gallon tank and looks a little like a toy but runs a framing or finish nailer and will get tires up above a hundred lbs, just not real fast.

RE: For those w/ little ones-don't get locked out of your unit!

I added a safety cutoff gas valve underneath the stove top in the kitchen as an added measure of safety. A couple of our grandchildren are known to occasionally turn knobs and such. They are well trained but low IQ and simply can't always remember the training. Gas is just too dangerous to rely on their training.
FWIW, I sometimes went beyond my own training as a young child just because I didn't see reason not to; just childhood stupidity or maybe ignorance. Yes I was trained with corporal punishment but sometimes even that wasn't enough.

RE: Laundry Detergent - RV Roof

I just use Dawn in a bucket of water and a long handled scrub brush. I do it once or twice a year whether it's needed or not.

RE: For those w/ little ones-don't get locked out of your unit!

When I was working for a living, I was often in remote areas of West Texas with litle communication. Getting locked out of my vehicle or a work site could have been a real disaster so I learned to carry two sets of keys, each in a diferent pocket. That saved me on more than one occasion and I still keep up the practice. Extra keys are cheap.

RE: Main Circuit Breaker

Another possibility; sometimes the screw is loose where the wire connects to the breaker. That causes the connection to get hot and the breaker can trip well under it's rated load. It is an easy fix with a screwdriver.

RE: 10 gauge Extension Cord(RV Cord)

I carry an RV extension cord and it gets used sometime almost every month. We're fulltimers and see lots of places where it is needed.
We also carry a 12 gauge 100 foot cord as a last resort. If I use an air conditioner on that one or anytime the power is questionable, I keep a digital voltmeter on the kitchen counter and check it frequently.

RE: Need comfortable tow vehicle seats!!!

I think I'd try an automotive seat cover shop first and maybe a custom shop.
We're facing the same problem and it's on my to-do list.

RE: Sewer smell...at wit's end!

There is another possibility, an unpleasant one. My son in law had odor problems with his fiver. He took shroud loose under the tanks and found both gray and black tanks had small cracks. We repaired them with fiberglass drywall tape and pvc/abs cement, building up in layers. Then added a strip of Eternabond tape for good measure. So far; so good and the smell is gone. . . for now.

RE: stopping at railroad grades especially for 5vers

I grew up in a railroad family and worked twenty years for a telco carrier on the UP and BNSF right of ways. I've heard and seen too many incidents caused by lack of thought. (I'd say stupidity except it isn't politically correct) I do not start across a track unless there is room on the other side for the entire rig to clear the tracks. If others get impatient, that is their problem.

RE: Isolating RV from Ground

As previously stated, a few inches of insulation will have no effect on a lightning bolt. You are much more likely to see damage from surges or spikes coming in through the electric power cable. That can be limited by surge protectors and, to an extent, by something as simple as coiling up the power cable.

RE: storm problems

It's possible you missed a fuse. There are some that look like a rectangular metal can about half inch by 1 and 1/4 inch with two screw posts on top and wires connected. Measure for voltage across the screws. If there is voltage, it is blown. They are just a few dollars at an RV shop.
