RE: Routes in CA from Mojave to I-80

This is a long way to get to Reno from Las Vegas.
If there is no particular reason for you to go the route you have described the fastest and shortest route is to take Hwy. 95 North out of Las Vegas to Fallon, then Hwy.50 to I-80 to Reno.
This is an excellent hiway with lots of scenic areas on your route. Death Valley will be just to the west of you and you can also go through it and pick up US 395 to go north to Reno.

RE: CA I-58 between Bakersfield and I-395

CA-58 is not a freeway per se.
Parts of it between Bakersfield and US-395 are single lane.
It is a relatively good hiway and traffic moves along at 60mph+

RE: US Health Insurance for Canadians??

Hmmm !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
$45 for 21 days, and you want something cheaper !
Don't get old, we pay $20 / day, 0r $1800 for 91 days.
We have a 30 day annual with a 61 day top-up.
We are both in our 70's and I have a pre-existing condition viz. a stent in 2003.

RE: The Economics of Snowbirding

I am surprised that none of the Canadian snowbirds have mentioned the additional cost for out of province travel/health insurance.
To try and keep the cost down this year we took out a policy with a $1000 deductible as to one with a zero deductible that we always had. Even so we still have to pay $1800 for this coverage - 30 day annual + 61 day top up for the two of us. As the years go by the price will only increase and even more so if your health becomes a question mark.
It will also cost us $2000 for gas to get to Yuma and return home.
Add in another $1500 for RV resort fees etc. and we are now at $5300 for the three months. While everyday food costs are lower down south we have a tendency to eat out a lot.
Yes it does cost a bit more to go south for a few months but when you are out on the golf course it does seem worthwhile to miss the cold wet miserable winter weather of the Pacific northwest. You also must remember that this is a type of lifestyle that you are investing in.
P.S. We leave the house thermostat at 50 degrees F. and the water is shut off, so there are some savings there.

RE: By-pass switch

Here is how I did my 2007 Saturn ION switch. I do not know how to attach photographs. If you send me your email I will send you 3 photographs of the installation.
2007 ION Switch for Towing (wiring in a switch versus pulling fuse #41)
1 Radio Shack rocker switch #275-0712 has 3 legs on it marked Ground Load Power.
1 in line 40 amp fuse holder
1 40 amp fuse
Heat shrink tubing
5 female lugs (make sure that female lugs will fit over fuse box male lugs )
1 O-ring to waterproof switch to fuse box
The two legs for the 40 amp fuse will be located on the Ground and Load legs of the switch. The two wires for the 40 amp fuse legs will be located on the Load and the Power legs of the switch.
Since there are two wires on the Load leg join one of the fuse wires to a 6" wire that will be one of the wires that goes to the fuse block leg. A second 6" wire will sit on the Power leg of the switch and the other end will be the second fuse block wire.
The 4 wires will be: (see first photograph)
1 In-Line Fuse wire on the Ground lug of rocker switch
2 In- Line Fuse wire & Fuse block wire on Load lug of rocker switch
1 Fuse block wire on Power lug of rocker switch
As you look at the switch as shown i.e. Ground Load Power (see photograph 3),with the Rocker switch pressed down on the left or front – this is the GO position. With the rocker switch pushed down on the right or back this is the TOW position.
If you have an VOM place it on the Ohms setting. With one of the leads connected to the third wire i.e. Power, take the other VOM lead and touch the center pin and the other pin.
In the GO position (rocker switch down on the left side) you should read approx. zero ohms on both pins.
In the TOW position you should see a flashing 1 saying open circuit.
I need an email address for you to send pictures and a wiring diagram. My own email address is iansanderson@juno.com
Some things I found out about the #41 fuse.
Your warning buzzer will no longer sound when you place the switch from GO to TOW.
It controls the ignition lock. If you have your key in the lock and you put the switch in the TOW position you are unable to remove the key from the lock.
N.B. Depending on your fuse set-up you may have either a male or a female end so just reverse the fittings as required.

RE: Changing Element in Hot Water Tank

The Suburban hot water tank anode uses a 1 1/16" socket for removal.
I am not sure what the Suburban hot water tank electrical element uses for removal is but I do believe that it is somewhat larger than that used for the anode.

RE: Advice on Driving S on I-5 in early Dec, Vancouver to Tucson

We go south on I-5 every year during the first part of January. The weather is the most important factor to look at on your route.
Quite often we spend the night at the Seven Feathers Casino in southern Oregon, (milepost 99 in Canyonville). Here is where we make the decision to carry on via I-5 or head out to the coast on Hwy.199 at Grant's Pass. If going on I-5 across the Siskyou mtn. pass the best time is usually between 11.00am and 03.00pm.
N.B. Oregon DMV requires that you must carry chains for your vehicle(s).
If we take the 199 to the coast we travel on 101 to Petaluma, the 116 to the Lakeville Hwy., then 37 to Wilson Ave., Mare Island Way, Curtola Pkwy to I-780 to I-680 and then east on CA 4 to J4 take Mountain House Parkway to I-580 which joins I-5 just south of Tracy, CA.
P.S. Usually there are no tolls Southbound for the Bay area but there are tolls Northbound. Last time I was charged $10 for RV & frog.

RE: New Toad - To Brake Assist or not Brake Assist

Towing Regulations.
The fact is that there are very few states and or provinces that require auxiliary brakes on a TOWED VEHICLE provided that the combination of vehicles can pass a stated perfomance test with respect to speed and braking distance and/or a given weight limit. The speed stated is usually 20mph. and the distance varies from 25 ft. to 50 ft. The weight limits stated run from 1500 lb.(NV) to 5000 lb. (AK). Only AK, FL, NC, NV & WI show a weight limit. HI, ND & DC statutes are not available on line.
Check the DMV statutes where you live. Do not get caught up with the argument that a TOWED VEHICLE is a TRAILER, it is not a TRAILER but you have to look at the wording used in the STATUTES with respect to what is being TOWED.
The state of Virginia is one where you have to be careful and read through the statutes to find "anything being towed"; see Chapter 10 § 46.2-1070. Brakes on trailers. (3000lb.)
The best reference that I have found with respect to the 50 states is:
home.roadrunner.com/~morodat/toad-brakes-by-state.html
and for Canada

RE: Fixing Bubble or Blister in Dometic/ A&E Awning?

This is one instance where you should "prick the bubble".
Seriously, I would use a sharp pin and make a tiny hole in each of the bubbles. This will ensure that there is no longer any air trapped inside.
The suggestion to then insert some "crazy glue" to stick the surfaces together is a good one and will probably work well. Good luck.

If you install AGM batteries you will get no corrosion since they are completely sealed. Expensive, but worth it in my opinion. I have three 12v - 31 DCM AGM's and have never seen corrosion or sulphate buildup in my battery compartment.

There is something wrong here if you had to personally pay the service provider. That is not how Coachnet works.

"As far as I know none of the WA state rest areas has potable water available for RV use."
Not true. The N/B Smokey Point rest area on I-5 at Marysville, WA certainly has a potable water faucet just after you clear the dump station.
I am sure other rest areas with dump stations will have potable water also.
