RE: Question for 2011 Dodge 6.7L owners

An Edge Insight can tell you when a regen is in progress. Note the Edge Insight IS NOT a tuner/power adder, just a monitor.

RE: diesel exhaust fluid?

Mazda also meets emissions without using urea in the new Skyactiv-D engine (2.2L IIRC) in the new CX-5. YouTube it.

RE: For you Ford 6.7L owners

Is this the product? BG DFC with Lubricity That's the same name and bottle size (small, white, tall) but the label on the one I have is different. I added the 244 last night before driving home from work. 1 quart to a full tank. The BG rep said to add that first to clean the system, then start with the treatments. I track every tank with an android app (2 actually), so we will see.

RE: finding max trailer weight for SUV

The GCWR and max tow are largely performance related. Dodge doesn't think a 3.55 equipped Durango would tow more than it's rated weight satisfactorily. Swapping in a 3.92 would increase performance, but unless you tow a lot, it's not worth it IMO. Use the 3.55s and realize you will slow down more in the hills and when running into a headwind. My personal opinion/suggestion is to shop for an RV that has a GVWR that matches you maximum tow rating, in this case, about 6000#. Add a transmission cooler too.

RE: Killer Dowel Pin in 5.9 12v

I'd like to see a link to a post (with pictures if possible) where a 24V has ever had the dowel pin drop out. I'm a member on TDR, DTR, and the Cummins Forum, and I haven't seen one. Not saying it's never happened, but I would think if it had, I would have seen a post about it. :h As far as I know, the 24V had a lip cast into the timing case to prevent it from happening. If you are a member of these sites then I suggest you do a search on "DOWEL PIN DAMAGE" and read till your are convinced that it does happen and is real. Theres Picture posted by Gary K5AWO on the TDR of a 24 valve all busted up. Theres no way to tell when the new Gear case was used. There is a repair bill invoice shown of a 02 24 valve that was warranted by Dodge for repair after a pin let-go while it was still under warranty. So go and read all about it. Easy there fella :) - I wasn't challenging you. I was just saying I hadn't read of any ----- and I owned a 2002 24V before this Megacab. I consider my self reasonably familiar with the 24V, and their good and bad points.

RE: Upgrade Tundra to F150 HD?

I think you are fine with the Tundra. The F150 is a great truck too, but it's not enough of an "upgrade" to justify the added expense IMO.

For you Ford 6.7L owners

I just chatted with one of our technicians, he was telling me about the local BG rep telling him about the HPFP failures on the 6.7L diesel. Apparently, the local BG reps just had a conference where the issue was discussed. BG will be marketing a product specifically for this issue. I got a sample of additives to try as the BG rep knows I track every tank (mpg) with an app on my phone. I'm testing the 244 diesel injector cleaner then some additives that are supposed to add lubricity to the fuel. The BG rep told our technician that Ford locally (Western Canada) is being very sticky with any HPFP failures. If any are brought in, a regional rep from Ford has to inspect the failed part before warranty will be authorized, and there is one current tale of woe sitting in the shop. Failed HPFP, a claim of a small amount of rust in the pump, warranty denied, $14,000 repair bill. The BG rep says the Ford dealer will be selling a case of BG additive with every oil change (included in the price) that will be suggested to be used in every tank. The BG additive is "DFC". I'm not a big user of fuel additives, but since this was all given to me, I will use each as directed and report back to the BG rep and you guys.

RE: Ford F-150 eco-boost MPG

I drove an EcoBoost for a 5 hour highway trip. I averaged 21 mpg at 70 mph. 3.55 axle, 4x4. I was very impressed with the power at all speeds -- from a stop, 50-70 mph, city, you name it. Impressive. The mpg was what I would class as "Just OK", but the mpg given the power output brought it back into the impressive range in my mind. It will be interesting to see what the 2013 RAM Hemi/8 speed gets for mpg with all the fancy doo-dads and comparable power.

RE: GM's new 2013 tow ratings

From the article: "The largest drop in tow ratings came in selected 2500 models with 5th-wheel and gooseneck hitches. For example, a two-wheel-drive regular-cab long bed with the Duramax diesel and 3.73:1 axle was rated at 17,800 pounds using a 5th-wheel hitch. For 2013, the rating drops to 14,400 pounds. A four-wheel-drive Extended Cab long bed with the diesel and a 3.73:1 axle saw its rating drop from 15,700 pounds to 10,900 pounds." “For 5th-wheel towing, SAE J2807 assumes that 20 percent of the trailer weight is on the kingpin,” Perelli said. “Previous calculations consider 17 percent with the understanding that the GVWR and RGAWR would not be exceeded. This change, in addition to the additional mass considered above for the additional passenger, optional content and aftermarket trailer hitch equipment can have a significant effect on the new calculated trailer weight ratings for 5th-wheel trailers.”

RE: Is a Half Tonner Enough Today?

For occasional towing on the heavier side of 7500# - 9000#, a half ton will suffice for most guys. The weekend warrior who uses the truck for a car the other 95% of the time, it's a great compromise with some newer ones being pretty capable. For someone who tows over 9500#, and/or tows a lot of miles, I think the 3/4 ton with it's more HD parts is the better purchase. JMHO.

RE: Maximum I can tow safely with this truck

Ok- I'm still a rookie. I can find GVWR on the door sticker, but where do I find payload capacity? There is another sticker on the door jamb somewhere that is yellow/red. It states "Tire and Loading Information". It states the maximum allowed combined weight of occupants and cargo. X2

Because heavier vehicles are rated differently. The engine is the same.

RE: HPFP ??

Certainly no expert here, but I do recall reading something about the pull over now message bring related to the dpf. Just a guess. If you google "pull over safely", there is plenty of reading available. Most it seems are there to save the dpf from melting down.
