RE: Adopted Shih Tzu -- Need Help w/Eating

As long as I'm convinced she won't starve herself I'll just wait her out. I was willing to briefly 'spoil' her (i.e. wet canned food instead of dry kibble) as I'm sure this whole thing's a big adjustment for her anyway.
I have 9 indoor/outdoor cats and 5 dogs and they're ALL free fed as in -- the bowl's empty & I refill it. I don't have any problem with them being overweight or hogging the bowl and it's been the way I've fed for oh, 30+ years? Bella will just have to adjust to my ways, not the other way around. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Adopted Shih Tzu -- Need Help w/Eating

On Tuesday I got a lovely 1-year-old spayed Shih Tzu from a lovely woman that couldn't keep her. She'd bought Bella as a puppy a year ago after she lost her 13+ year old dog. She has an adult autistic daughter that lives at home. The daughter never adjusted to the new dog and finally got where she regressed and wouldn't even come out of her room to eat. So the lady decided that the best thing to do was rehome Bella.
Bella is still puppyish, never saw a stranger, housebroken, just a wonderful dog --- EXCEPT.
Her former mom totally spoiled her in eating to the point that she was handfed boiled chicken ONLY for the last few months because 'that is all she would eat'.
OK, I have dogs and cats that eat ANYTHING. Mainly I free feed kibble Authority or Natural Balance. Since Tuesday Bella has had a FEW bits of chicken, a bite or two of wet dog food in a pouch, a lick or two of warmed chicken broth, and several pieces of turkey yesterday.
She has turned up her nose at her boiled chicken mixed with ANYTHING, doesn't eat people food, absolutely NO kibble (although she WILL eat treats), no canned food (dog or cat), no dry cat food. I am at a loss here people.
Otherwise she is healthy, drinks water, pee looks normal, plays well, sleeps well, interacts with the household pets, people, and cats. I have cats and dogs that will BEG for the food she turns her nose up at. Any ideas?? The bowl of kibble is always down and she's sniffed at it a time or two. She won't starve herself, will she?

RE: What Credit Card do you use?

I have had a Citibank MC over 6 years now. I charge *everything* I can: cell phones, utilities, insurance, etc. and pay it in full every month. I don't even know what the insurance rate is. I get enough free points each year to complete my Christmas list of gifts with GC's of all sorts -- to Kohl's, Walmart, Starbucks, Red Lobster, etc.
The GC's cost fewer points for the dollar amount than having that money credited back to your bill. So GC's it is!!

Black Friday -- Anyone Use Their RV?

There's an early bird special I really want @ Best Buy. Their ad states they start giving out tickets @ 10PM for the 12AM opening on Friday.
I'm thinking of taking my RV to their parking lot, so after I get the ticket I can wait in comfort until midnight.
Has anyone done this before? Any experiences you'd like to share?

RE: Pays to check pharmacies for prices

I get my heartworm meds from Pets Megastore in Australia. Shipping is reasonable and quick. Meds are the same we get in the USA. Prices are very reasonable and they run specials frequently.

RE: Is your home haunted?

Not a ghost story but kinda spooky nevertheless. This was a story from my Dad's side of the family.
My Dad's grandfather (my Great-Granddad) had a job 'in cotton' as they used to say. He had a black cat named "Tom" that would wait on the gate post every evening as G-Granddad came back from town. Tom would then jump on the horse's saddle and ride to the barn with G-Granddad.
No animals were allowed in the house but Tom. Every night after dinner, G-Granddad would read in the parlor in front of the fireplace with Tom purring on his lap.
G-Granddad got sick and they had to do an operation. This was when the Doctor's would come out to your house. They put sheets on the dining room table and did the operation right in the house. They had to lock all the doors and windows to keep Tom out of the house. During the entire operation he hung on the window screen screaming and howling and scratching to get in. All of a sudden he stopped.
G-Granddad had died. Tom let out one last bloodcurdling shriek, jumped off the window, and was never seen at the farm again.

RE: Is your home haunted?

When I was married to DS's dad, we lived in a house he had purchased before we met. It was a much older house but I don't know what year it was built. It used to be a plumbing business before it was a house.
I lived there 4 years before we were divorced and never saw/felt/heard anything. During that time we had a son, who's now 14.5. Starting about 2.5, he would tell me he'd hear voices laughing in the living room and would go out there and no one would be there. He would go look at his Dad and stepmom and they would be sleeping.
This went on until they moved out of the house when DS was almost 7. As he got older he would tell me 'the ghosts played with me last night', but the stories never varied. He would wake up in his bedroom at Dad's house to hear laughter and giggling in the living room. When he went out there, the TV wasn't on and looking in his Dad's bedroom they were asleep. Then sometimes he would play 'hide and seek' with the fog that appeared in the livingroom that was the 'ghost'. \
Now that he's older, he STILL tells the same story. He is very adamant about the many many times he 'played with the ghosts' in his Dad's house and played hide-n-seek with the mist that appeared.

Great Dog Show on NOVA!

If you ever see this show in your TV guide, watch it. It's called "Dogs Decoded"/NOVA and it is wonderful!
All about how dog's thousands' of years association with us has altered the way they respond to our feelings, emotions, facial/hand gestures, etc.
Another fascinating thing was they taped dogs barking (playing, guarding the yard, restrained) and played the barking back for a number of people. The people could identify what the dogs were barking about just from hearing it!
See it if you get a chance!

RE: Buying a puppy VS. adopting

My advice would be to check the local CL. Most often puppies are there and the people have the mother and possibly even the father to see. Usually they have had an 'oops' litter.
Try to meet both parents if at all possible. Be sure all the pups in the litter are active, alert, seeking out human companionship, have dry eyes, no runny noses, no skin infections, no poopy butts, clean ears. I wouldn't worry too much about bloated, wormy-looking tummies as you can clear worms out pretty quickly and most pups have them anyway. The pups should be active, active, active -- playing with each other, your shoes, the parent(s). Unless they've just eaten, they shouldn't be still. Check for high flea infestations, although that can be taken care of also.
Be sure the parent(s) seem stable in temperment, not vicious/growly, friendly, willing to interact with at least the owner (if not you also). If you are not allowed to meet the mother, at least -- go look somewhere else.
Nothing wrong with getting a puppy wherever you want. Good Luck to your brother!

RE: Buying a car for my son....

Well, I'm getting the Jeep. Not exactly what DS wanted (he wants a 'real' Jeep) but hey, it'll do him for awhile. Not too expensive to insure, not high on the list of 'stolen' cars, 1/2 the NADA value, will be paid for, he pays for gas and for awhile he'll just be driving it to school & back.
I don't have it yet as M. wanted to replace the headliner for me and wash/vacuum it. Of course son wanted to get it 'yesterday' -- LOL! Even though he can't drive it yet he said he could sit in it and play the radio!!

RE: Buying a car for my son....

Drop by tonight with 3K cash......
Take your son so he can drive it back home :B
Would be a little hard as DS is only 14 1/2 & doesn't have his license yet. However, such a deal doesn't come often and I can drive it occassionally enough to keep it in shape for 18 more months.
I asked if I could put a deposit on it. I've known M. for 15 years and am Godmother to her G'son she's raising. However, they offered it to the neighbors first (known them 30 years) and don't want to 'offend' them.....

Buying a car for my son....

Keep your fingers crossed for me! I have an opportunity to buy a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4WD, 50,000 miles for $3K. A good friend of mine -- her mother just died and she's selling it & just wants to get rid of it. It's in awesome shape.
Her husband already offered it to the neighbors, but for a higher price. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they don't want it or can't get it!!

RE: Before purchase, do you all see your exact unit?

My Pup I bought from photos on Ebay. First saw it when I went to pick it up. It was perfect and exactly what I wanted.
My HTT I bought from pictures on RVW's website and a slideshow of the interior. I did pick the interior color when I first called the salesman. When I went to pick it up it was perfect and exactly what I wanted.
So the short answer is "nope".

RE: Neat Screen Protector Needed

Took a trip @ T'giving when my HTT was barely a month old! My little Shih Tzu shredded the screen while I was in my cousin's house enjoying family and food!!
You can buy replacement screen that's labeled for pets. It's thicker than regular screen. I got some and replaced the screen with the pet screening. Haven't had a problem since then and we've taken a number of trips with the dog!
