RE: Looking to buy 1990 to 2000, what issues?

My advice would be to stay with "top of the line" models....ie: Foretravel "320", Country Coach "Magna" or "Affinity", Monaco "Signature" or "Executive" etc.
Test drive....These top models should still be solid even after 100,000 miles.

RE: Horton air driven fans

You guys are right...I was mistaken!!
When I picked up the truck, the guy told me he had to replace the air line to the fan, so I assumed it was air driven.
Opened the hood and looked today, and it is indeed belt driven and "air clutch".

Horton air driven fans

We are moving some dirt, and borrowed the neighbors dump truck. It's power unit is an old Peterbilt tractor with a Cat engine.
I noticed it has an air powered cooling fan for the radiator. I've been told it is called a "Horton" fan system.
It appears to work very well. My question is....I wonder why this system was not used on DP motor homes? I would think it would be a cheaper and more efficient fan drive system.
It seems the motor home industry elected to go to the hydraulic fan drive instead. I wonder why.

RE: Washer/dryer combo

Siggyd is right. The condensed washer dryer combos are getting too hot especially on the top. We got one LG unit 2 years back, but we found a way to be satisfied with that. Even the heat is not a problem for us as we use it to finish the drying process when the clothes are still a little dampy.
The good news is that nowadays there's a lot of good units. I especially like the LG washer/dryer combos - their design is nice and modern. Does anybody have any experiences with them?
We have a "LG3431HW". Are very happy with it. We full time and use it exclusively.
Some notable observations....being a direct drive, it is much quieter operating then the Splendide. It has a very high "spin' cycle, so it dries the clothes much faster then the Splendide. Most loads are dry within 30 minutes.

RE: 100,000 Mile club

'97 Signature with a Cummins "M11", Allison B500 currently at 122,000 miles. Only mechanical problem, had to replace the electronic voltage regulator.
It turned over to the 100,000 mark while I was on my trip to Alaska a couple of year ago. Still in great shape and I have no plans on getting a different unit anytime soon.

RE: Spare Tire on DP

In the old days, RVers carried spare tires.....
In modern times, an "ERS" contract is much easier and lighter to carry!!

RE: 1994 Safari

I had a '95 Sahara 35ft, that would be very similar. It had a B5.9 (230 hp) with a MD3060 Allison.
The Safari are top line for this era. The roof leaks are likely from cap/roof seam. Easy fix. Or they can be from lack of caulk around roof vents etc. Again easy fix.
I would think $10,000.00 would be a steal. A salvage company would pay more than that.

RE: What is your most memorable/fun RV trip?

Alaska, the ultimate RVing adventure... and don't be in a hurry to get there and back. We enjoyed Canada as much as Alaska, especially northern British Columbia and the Yukon Territory.

RE: 96 Monaco Exec Power Steering Fluid...

If its like my '97 Sig....there will be an aluminum tank on the right side of the engine compartment. This tank is the resouvoir for the hydraulic fans and power steering. Mine has a sight class. It requires Dexron III or equivallent.

RE: For those of you that travel off the interstate ..

I drive at least 50% of my driving on non interstate roads. I have a "DP" and finding fuel has never been an issue. Even in the more rural areas, there will be trucks, and trucks will need fuel. So there will be stations set up to provide the service. By the way, I have never had any issues with bad fuel either.

RE: Blue Ox tow bar maintenance

larry cad,
I'm wondering why the $79.00? I stopped there a couple of years ago and was charged $25.00 for parts, camping was free.
Are they now charging for the camp ground???? or was the $79.00 all for parts?

RE: south rim

We stayed in the NF....there are a number of different roads a mile or so south of Tusayan, that lead off of the Highway into the forest for some nice private camping. It did look like it could get muddy when wet though. THe camping areas in the NF are easy to spot. We drove to the Grand Canyon with our toad.
The Ten X campground was not open when we were up there....if memory serves, I don't think they open the Ten X until May 1.

RE: after market freezer

Check out "EdgeStar freezer" on ebay. I purchased the "80" quart size, about 4 yrs. ago. Has been working flawlessly. Mine was a "scratch and dent" and purchased at a discounted price.

We're presently parked on the "BLM" near Wickenburg, AZ. This morning when I woke up it was 37 degrees with snow flurries. Elevation 2800 ft.

RE: LED lightning

Most of the lights in my RV are fluorescent, even the porch light and basement lights. They don't use much power and burn cool. Bulbs last a long time, and are cheap when they do burn out. Biggest draw back is the ballasts when they go bad.
We boondock most of the winter months, but find we use very little lighting at night.....usually only one or two lights on at a time. Wife reads, I watch TV.
After reading about some peoples complaints about "LED" lighting for reading, I'm somewhat skeptical about "LED" effectiveness.
Also, when considering the cost vs savings, I don't think I'd live long enough to justify the switch. So, in my situation, switching over to "LED" just doesn't seem to make sense.

RE: Over Charged (for Service)

If no parts were involved, you will be charged the hourly rate, for how long the tech worked on your RV. It should not be to difficult to determine if they are padding the time that they are charging you.
Most service centers are charging around $100.00 per hour give or take $25.00.
I would guess you are going to be charged for 2 hours.

RE: auxiliary bay freezer

Around 5 yrs ago, I purchased an "EdgeStar" 80 qt. "Scratch and Dent" portable freezer. I paid around $300.00/$400.00 for it on "Ebay".
Has been working flawlessly. Uses very little energy. We run it on 110 volt all the time. We dry camp for 3 months during the winter.....no problems.
Only draw back....wife seems determined to keep it full so I never get to eat fresh food.

I've run a set of "Sumitomos". If the price is right, I'd have no problem running another set.
