RE: Newbie.....Hi all! Towing question...lol.

Get a travel trailer! Your F-150 can only manage small 5ers due to payload limits. You can pull a much bigger TT with your standard hitch with a weight distribution system. Check out RV Basics, RV Towing Tips and Trailer Loading and Towing Guide.

RE: WHAT TIRES FOR MY TRUCK

I have Michelin LTX MS2 on my F250. Love 'em. Ride is good, excellent traction in all weather. For a non-A/T they are decent in mud. Best of all they are quiet! The drone of tire noise is annoying and it also causes fatigue which is one thing I don't need when towing home after a long day/night of racing. When I bought mine the warehouse that supplies the dealer I use said they were back ordered and couldn't provide an ETA so I purchased them from Discount Tire Direct and they installed & balanced them for $20 per tire.

RE: Height of Carports and RV's?

Go with something that has 13' of clearance at the outside edges. If you want more protection for your shorter trailer buy a couple side panels.

RE: Easiest Places to Get Fuel?

I generally use Flying J RV lanes. Since I have a diesel I will occassionally use the truck lanes but that's more of a hassle than it's worth here in Indiana because they don't tax the truck pumps. I have to go inside, wait in line, where I'll inevitably get a new hire who has to ask how to set the pumps up for tax. Go back out and dispense the fuel. Go back in and wait in line again to finalize sale.

RE: Class A RV towing a vehicle

1) You need to see if your car (toad) is towable four down at dinghy guide
2) If it is towable 4 down you'll need a tow bar, baseplate and aux. braking system. I like Ready Brake because it's a tow bar and brake combined. I use a Demco baseplate.
3) If it's not towable four down and it's front wheel drive you'll need a dolly.
I also recommend a Protect-a-tow to save your paint from chips.

So long ole guy

Ranger crossed the Rainbow Bridge last night. He was a 12 year old lab. He had a lot of spirit and was the best dog a person could want. In his 12 years he fought through a mid-back stroke and learned to walk again. Had three stomach surgeries to remove rocks. A bacteria infection that almost killed him and ultimately destroyed his immune system. The past six months he's pretty much been unable to walk without us holding up his back end by his tail (he wouldn't tolerate a sling) because he'd developed a doggie form of MS and in the past six weeks the infection had returned. Yesterday afternoon I came home to find him out of it, in shock and severely swollen. A quick haul to the vet revealed his stomach had flipped causing bloat. The doc said that even if he survived the surgery he probably wouldn't survive the recovery. He'd been through so much we just couldn't put him through anymore. It was his time and he didn't go alone, which was important to my wife because Ranger was a real people dog.

RE: Tire Performance??

An M/S rating doesn't necessarily mean an aggressive tread design. Every vehicle I own has tires with M/S ratings and none of them have aggressive tread patters. I have never heard of anyone switching to a M/S tire just for winter. I have heard of people switching to a snow or winter tire because many of today's "all-season" tires are actually 3 season tires which provide poor traction in snow and on cold roads. If you could provide the make and model of your tire it would mean more than simply stating it's a M/S tire.

RE: looking to buy my first (used)trailer. . .

Read RV Tips and Trailer loading and Towing Guide. There is a lot of useful information in there. Also check out RV Basics.
I won't rehash what previous people said.
Just look, look and look some more before you buy. You need to get an idea of different layouts and which will work best for you.
I had a Terry 28X TT. It was 28' and slept 6. There was a queen bed in front, the table/booth turned into a double bed and there was a set of bunk beds in the back each bed limited to 150 lbs.
The biggest problem with TT's is they generally have small fresh, gray and black water tanks. Since you mentioned dry camping with 6+ people keep this in mind. I think my Terry had something like 50 fresh, 30 gray and 20 black tanks. By comparison my MH has 90 gal fresh, 55 gal gray and 30 black tanks. With just me and my wife dry camping we will pretty much kill the water and fill the tanks in four days, but then again we don't try to conserve. We take regular shows just like at home.
Most TTs don't come with a generator, which you'll need to run your a/c if you'll be dry camping. Recommend spending the money for a good Honda generator like a EU3000. They are extremely quiet and efficient, but pricey. Some people purchase two EU2000's and run them in parallel. I've heard that Yamaha has a good quiet gen too.

RE: V-10 Banks Power Pack

The '00-'04 2V (valve) engine made 310 hp and 425 torque. The '05 and up 3V made 362 and 457. From what I've been told the 3V has more of a header style exhaust and they did away with the very restrictive Y pipe so the gains aren't as dramatic. The 2V had pretty restrictive manifolds but the real killer was the Y pipe. It had two pinch points and a "T" which really chocked it. Due to complaints Ford redesigned the Y pipe but from what I heard it really didn't work well. It increased the HP by a few but hurt the torque by a few. Banks claims a 56 hp and 67 lb of torque increase on the 2V engine and a 7% increase in mileage. I haven't driven it enough to check the mileage. I searched the internet and found a system on sale for $1800 and change. It's normally about $2k. I also spent $100 on O2 sensors and $135 on an intermediate pipe.

RE: V-10 Banks Power Pack

It took me about 14 hours and 75% of that I was working alone. I figure if you took it to a "Banks installation center" they could do it in 8 due to practice. Since I was working in a shop that is home to a business and my buddy was busy working on his jobs. He'd come over and help me when I got to steps that took two people. The instructions were good, but could use more pictures (not drawings) to make a couple steps more clear.

V-10 Banks Power Pack

A couple weekends ago I installed a Banks Power Pack on my '02 F250 V10. This weekend was my first opportunity to tow with it. Wow, what a difference! I felt like I was towing with my old 7.3 PSD Excursion. Before I installed the PP I always felt like the truck was straining. Sort of like a weight lifter who holds his breath and grunts. Now it's more like a well conditioned athlete who knows how to control his breathing to increase his output. Like with anything in life there are negatives. It is a little louder than I'd like, but not obnoxious and the install was time consuming and required some special tools. I'm glad I did it at a friends fabrication shop as it took a few tools that I didn't have at home. Bottom line, if you want to wake up your V10 this product definately delivers.

RE: Most scenic route from Philly to Nashville?

I-68 to US-219 (about 20 miles west of Frostburg, MD). US-219 to Thomas. WV-32 to Harman. US-33 (stop by Spruce Knob to go to highest point in WV) to Franklin. US-220 to I-64. I-64 west about 20 miles. WV-311 to I-81. It's a lot of small roads but the sight seeing is second to none.

RE: Tow Vehicle Tire Purchase

Michelin LTX MS2. Got 'em on F-250 and love 'em. Great traction, great ride and quiet. My local tire shop was told by their distributor there were on a 3 month backorder. I bought them through Discount Tire Direct and my local tire shop mounted/balanced for $10 per tire.

RE: Big O and brakes

Yes. I've had two brake jobs done by two different Big O shops. Both times the cost was fair and workmanship good. Big O stores are franchises. Therefore the owners generally take pride in making sure that customers are treated right.

We stayed at Creek Side. Parking is at a premium in PF and the bus made a stop at the CG which made it very convenient. The CG was clean. Did not have any complaints.

RE: Propane smell coming from outside of MH

I go through a lot of propane and have had it filled at different places. I've never heard of not opening the bleed valve. There is a check valve inside the fill port. It may not have seated all the way when he removed the hose, especially if he over filled it. Also overfilling can allow liquid into the pressure regulator which can damage it and allow the smell to come out. If the tank were to crack chances are you wouldn't be in any position to be typing on this forum.

RE: An Old(er) Newbie

I think a TC would be too small for full timing. You are going to need more storage, generator and good sized fresh, gray and black tanks. Check out 4WD Motorhomes. Some models are big enough to provide you the room and amenties you need but give you that piece of mind that you can get into and out of where you are going.

RE: Question about transmission and being towed

You don't have to go with them, but if you have the time and opportinity it wouldn't hurt. When I had mine towed I was there for the pick up but didn't have time to follow him to the drop. The hardest part was finding a wrecker service that would tow a MH. Of the four heavy wrecker services I called only one would tow MHs. The other three said they quit towing MHs because they were tired of the silly damage claims levied against them. I discussed this with the operator when he showed up. He said most of the claims that he's seen were due to scratches on the lower edge of the rear of the coach where it had hit the ground. Because of the long overhang behind the rear tires it doesn't take much to make it scrape once the front tires are up in the air. He said the driver has to be extremely careful and go slow over any change in incline to prevent the rear from scraping.

RE: Campgrounds near Cincinnati, Ohio

We stayed at Frontier in Waynesville which is about 20 minutes northeast of Cincy. The owners were very hospitable. The CG was well kept and quiet. Also, if you like walking around small towns and visiting antique stores Waynesville is a nice place to visit.
