RE: Crossing the Bridge

That's ridiculous. Sounds like someone made a formal rule becuase of some past situation, and now everyone has to abide by it, to the letter.
Hard to believe, but this was actually an improvement over the policy in place on our previous visit to the park: at that time, all motorhomes with toads had to pay an additional daily fee for the towed car. Ie, RVer's with trailers or fifth wheels paid only one daily fee, but motorhomes with tow cars paid two.
They apparently saw the lack of logic in that, so instituted the waivers for towed cars-- but only if they were actually under tow upon arrival, no exceptions.

RE: Crossing the Bridge

On a related note:
We stopped to do laundry just before arriving at Cherry Creek State Park outside of Denver. Since I had time to kill in their large parking lot, I unhooked the tow car there, then had DW follow me to the entrance to the park.
Turns out, Colorado State Parks charge a daily fee per vehicle-- but the fee is waived for towed vehicles. They wouldn't waive it for our car, though, because we weren't towing it. Since we were staying for a week, the difference in price wasn't trivial-- but after some discussion, it became clear that if the car wasn't towed across the line adjacent to the pay booth, they were going to charge me the extra fee.
So (after apologizing to the drivers in line behind me for the delay) I hooked up the car, towed it (running, with DW still behind the wheel) past the designated line, then unhooked it on the other side. Talking to hosts and rangers about the incident later, not a single one seemed to think this was the slightest bit unreasonable.

RE: Pandora Radio

Anyone know what the data rate is for Spotify ? I'm gonna try it.
Last time I checked, it was free to use on a computer, $9.99 per month if you want to use it on Ipads, Iphones, and similar portable devices.
BTW, google "Spotify Playlists" and you'll find all kinds of sites with thousands of playlists people have put together; with one touch you can play their list.

RE: Pandora Radio

Basically anything that has EVER been released is available on Spotify.
When I was in high school (Class of '68) some guys from the neighborhood formed a band, recorded some songs, and one of them hit-- they became a one hit wonder.
So, a few months ago I was trying the free version of Spotify, and as a test, I searched for that song. Ten seconds later, for the first time in forty years, I was listening to "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet", by The Reflections. I've been paying Spotify ten bucks a month ever since, that is some pretty awesome technology....

RE: Did Direct TV change it's rule?

Hey, Otto, I believe you-- I've done the same thing, many times. There have been occasions when it took a second, or even a third call, to get the job done, but that's why they call it CSR roulette.
Along the same vein, lot of folks don't believe it's possible to receive DNS, plus local networks, all at the same time. It may be illegal or immoral or both, but it's definitely doable. We had DNS from both coasts, plus locals, with Dish, and when Dish lost the right to provide DNS a few years ago, we switched over to Direct-- where we had no problem doing the same thing.
We're in Gold Canyon, too-- must be something in the air out here that pleases the gods of satellite television. :)

RE: Toad in accident - Insurance coverage?

FWIW, I specifically asked Progressive if I needed additional coverage, not just for the baseplate, SMI system, and wiring, but also for the electric lift and scooter that ride in the back of our Odyssey (which would almost certainly be damaged if we were rear-ended).
The answer was "absolutely", so I added a $5000 rider, at nominal cost.

RE: Restringing 4-String Day Night Shade

For those that need a shade restrung, here's the easy three-step process I used:
1. Pulled up in front of Jacque's house in Mesa, AZ.
2. Opened the motorhome door for Jacque, pointed at the offending shade and took a seat our of her way.
3. 30 minutes later, handed Jacque $40.
Seriously, for those who are unsure of their skills or just don't want to bother doing the job themselves, this lady does great work. If you can't get to Mesa, you can ship your shade to her UPS and she'll ship it back to you the same day.

(I have no personal affiliation with Jacque whatsoever, just a satisfied customer)

RE: Turning off my propane at night

Traveling with Propane
"Driving with propane turned off may seem to be a no-brainer, but forgetting to turn your propane tanks off before traveling is one mistake that is easy to make. It's illegal to have your vehicle in motion with your propane tank valves open, and most definitely a risk when traveling through tunnels. It doesn't take much imagination to realize the impossibility of escape from a burning RV in a tunnel, on a bridge, or on the highway, anywhere. Play it safe and prevent fires."
Seek out Professional sources of your RV questions - advice given on forums should only feed your desire for Professional answers.
I was curious enough to find out who the "professional" was that provided your quote above. Turns out, your quote comes from an article on About.com, written by a lady named Michele Boyer: here are her credentials:
"Michele is retired living as a full-time RVer, with her husband, Perry, and cat Mr. Mooo. Together they have lived in or traveled the western states extensively, but do go east of the Mississippi every now and then. She spent several years planning the switch from permanent home to full-time travel in their RV and knows what it takes to make the big changeover.
Experience:
Over the years Michele has owned, rented, or borrowed different types of RVs including Class C, Class B, popup tents trailers, and trailers. At present she lives as a full-timer in a 34-foot Airstream, snowbirding in the winter, and wandering at will during the summer."
Apparently, when it comes to matters of physics and engineering, your definition of "professional" differs from mine.... :)

RE: Turning off my propane at night

"We've seen no "hard" statistics on the matter, but we reason: If you did roll your RV, or get it clobbered hard enough to break a gas line, then you've statistically upped your chances of having LP where you don't want it.
Wow. One Chicken Little with Propane Paranoia "reasons" that a problem exists (with no research, no statistics, no data), and that's supposed to be definitive? Has it not occurred to you that others may have "reasoned" the same thing, then taken the time and achieved the expertise to design, test, and manufacture safety valves that exist precisely because they prevent the unwanted distribution of propane in such occurrences?
Please, take a little time to educate yourself to the changes that have occurred in the storing and distribution of RV propane since the 70's. Here is a good start.
In any case common sense and law does require you to SHUT the LP valves...."
If there is such a law, anywhere, you'd do us all a favor to show us where it is and what it says. BTW, tunnels don't count.

RE: Live Direct TV on your iPad anywhere you go!

The capability to do this over the same wifi network has been present in the Direct TV app for some time, although there are a lot more channels available now than there were when it first became available. Works great on our home network, my wife uses it all the time to watch TV in bed without waking me up. Between this, and the HBO GO, Showtime Go, and Max Go apps that make their content available for streaming anywhere, that's a lot of content available for viewing on the Ipad.
Looks like the main improvement in this latest Directv update is the capability to watch some of their On-Demand content directly through the Directv app, as opposed to using the separate apps provided by HBO, Showtime, etc.
BTW, for those that want to take material recorded at home with them for viewing on the Ipad or other devices on the road, Direct TV offers the Nomad. This is NOT a Slingbox device, it does not stream content, just copies it to your mobile device. The good news is, once it's there, no internet connection is required-- so you can watch whatever content you've transferred wherever you are.

RE: Replacement sink for 2003 Bigfoot 29SL?

Here's a 25"x17" double steel sink that requires a 23"x13" cutout for $128.35.
Or you can get one like it for $102.79 from Amazon
Thanks! That's the best fit for the cutout I've seen yet. I have to go take another look at the motorhome to be sure the overall size will work, but assuming it does, I'll order one of those this afternoon.

Replacement sink for 2003 Bigfoot 29SL?

We need to replace the plastic sink in our '03 Bigfoot 29SL, preferably with a stainless sink, but I so far haven't found a direct replacement for the existing hole in the countertop: 23.25" x 14", 6.5 " deep. Can't read the sticker on the sink to know who originally manufactured it or the model number.
1. Any suggestions for a source for a sink that size?
2. There's a little bit of extra space all around the sink; how big a deal would it be to have the present hole enlarged to fit another size drop-in sink? I'm not a DIY'er, so recommendations on the best type of shop to do such work are welcome as well.

RE: Towing 2011 Honda Odyssey

I realize it's likely to void out my warranty.
Meant to address this is my earlier post, but forgot...
Contrary to popular belief, installation of the Remco pump (or a base plate, or any other towing equipment) does NOT void your warranty. This same debate has circulated for years regarding the addition of "performance parts" to vehicles.
When Congress passed the "Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act", they addressed this question directly:
"...the Act prohibits motor vehicle manufacturers from canceling motor vehicle warranties solely because the owner has installed the products of 'outside vendors' on the motor vehicles."
Of course, if the installation of an aftermarket part actually causes damage (or, in cases such as the Remco pump, fails to prevent damage), that's a whole different thing and needs to be taken up with the manufacturer of the aftermarket part.

RE: iPad for use as a GPS

There's no good reason to use software that is constantly accessing the internet-- you'll be using a lot of data when it really isn't necessary, plus you'll be out of luck if you get out of cell coverage.
As noted in the post above, apps with onboard storage are readily available, and they don't take all that much room (I don't have any of the apps suggested above, but CoPilot USA uses 1.6GB). You'll have to be connected to the internet via wifi to update the maps, but other than that updates are easy, just one touch-- a lot easier than the rigamarole I have to go through to update my Garmins.

RE: Towing 2011 Honda Odyssey

Did you read your Owners Manual? I believe it says not to tow four down.
With Odyssey's, the lack of owner's manual endorsement for four-down towing may not mean much. Although Honda pulled their sanction for towing Odyssey's starting with the 2005 models, there's a wealth of anecdotal evidence showing that, mechanically, the 2005 through 2010's can be towed four-down without adverse consequences. Several of us here on the forum have been doing so for some time, using the same procedures detailed in the manuals of the earlier models.
There was a major redesign for 2011, though, which could change the picture somewhat. But, Remco stays on top of this stuff, so if they say it's towable as-is, they're probably right. Of course, if they're wrong, the cost of learning that will come out of your wallet, not their's. :)

Verizon Ipad 3 Hotspot Tethering-- No Extra Charge

Maybe Verizon finally gets it?
Verizon's plans include the personal hotspot functionality at no extra charge, Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney confirmed to Macworld in an email. That's a different from story from both carriers' iPhone policies, which require an additional $20 per month to enable tethering, albeit while adding extra data capacity to the existing plans."

RE: Rv Insurance - Suggestions Please

Progressive-- when our Class A was totaled by a falling tree in '97, they wrote us a check for $35,000 more than I'd paid for it a year earlier (under the New Replacement Cost provision of the policy). More recently, they covered $3500 damage on my motorhome, plus the cost of repairing the gas pump I tagged with the rear end swing. In both cases, claim handling couldn't have been better, and there were no rate increases afterward.

RE: 2010 Honda Odyessy Towing

No, I don't do anything beyond the warmup procedure mentioned, except that I do it more often than recommended (like, every four to five hours, regardless of miles towed).
I researched this whole topic (towing post-2004 Odysseys) pretty thoroughly before purchasing my 2009 (there's a LONG thread about it that you can probably find if you search the archives in this forum). In that research, in this and several other forums, I ran across several people that had extensive experience towing the post-2004's, one of them over 50,000 miles towing. Despite a lot of doomsday predictions from folks uncomfortable with the fact that it isn't factory sanctioned, I couldn't find a single first person report of the slightest problem.
