RE: The Silver Trail to Keno City, Yukon

At the top near the signpost there was a cabin that had me pondering WHY anyone would build a home THERE, even for mining ...

I believe there's a silver working just below and to the left of that cabin.

RE: The Silver Trail to Keno City, Yukon

Ever been to Elsa, Sue? Apparently it's 'just around the corner' from Keno. The company I worked for, had a branch at Elsa, and everyone was terrified in case you got transferred there. I never did go there, but I did get to work in Cassiar for a very short while. Compared to Elsa, Cassiar was in the tropics!
You drive through (past?) Elsa to get to Keno - Keno is about 6 miles further up the valley. Many people who worked there loved the place.

The Silver Trail to Keno City, Yukon

I had to make a quick trip from Whitehorse to Keno City and back on Monday, and have posted 39 pictures and commentary on my blog. The roads, both the North Klondike and the Silver Trail, are in pretty good condition but you need to keep your eyes open and speed down for breaks, some of which are so wide that they can't be avoided (on the North Klondike). This is an area that few people, even Yukoners, ever visit, but it is spectacular in both its remoteness and its vastness. It's much better when you don't have to do the entire 1,026 km round trip in one day!

RE: Dawson Creek - favorite restaurants?

I like Mr. Mikes.
Second vote for Mr Mike's.
Jim
LOL - pretty sad when Mr. Mike's is the best restaurant in a town! But having eaten many, many meals in Dawson Creek over the years, I agree - though I would have phrased it more like "there are no 'must-visit' restaurants, but Mr. Mike's is good".

RE: Dawson Creek - favorite restaurants?

Since you have gone out and had dinner, now you have to go out and have a sour toe shooter at the Downtown hotel.
That's Dawson City, not Dawson Creek, though :)

RE: Dempters or Dalton?

Both highways are amazing - though similar, they're very different and I can't say that I would recommend one over the other (although some days when I'm asked, I do say that the Dempster is better). See my photo-log of the Dempster at http://www.explorenorth.com/library/roads/dempster-photos.html The Arctic Ocean is more expensive to get to from the end of the Dempster but it's more impressive than at Prudhoe. There's more commercial traffic on the Dalton, but road maintenance levels seem about equal. The Arctic Circle crossing on the Dempster is far more scenic.

RE: Summer in the Yukon - snow forecast for tonight

I was thinking about posting the picture below showing the snowblower packed for our RV trip up north (delivering it to our kids up there) with a tongue in cheek comment about urban myths of some folks crossing the border into Canada in July with skis strapped to their roofs.
Maybe I should reconsider??
snow blower loaded!
You could probably even make a few dollars on your way up, blowing driveways!

RE: Summer in the Yukon - snow forecast for tonight

I'm sure glad that I delayed putting my summer wheels and tires on until last night! The lawn mower is in the back of the pickup to take to our cabin to do the Spring cleanup, but I'm rethinking that plan! :)

Summer in the Yukon - snow forecast for tonight

The forecast is for 1-2 inches of snow in Whitehorse tonight and tomorrow morning. I was out on the motorcycle for 3 hours today and went through a few snow flurries down by the Teslin River. Ah yes, Summer in the Yukon!

RE: I want to pan/highbank for gold

You do get what you pay for. If it's free (like at Dawson) then there's no gold, or a couple of flakes if you get lucky. Where there's lots of gold for highbankers and dredgers, there's a fee - such as at Chicken: http://chickengold.com/recreational_gold_mining.html

RE: Two new Highway Cams Hwy 37 & 37-A

What's the deal with the cabin at the end of the road in the first picture?
Is it or was it visitor info? I stopped there once and there was an old guy with a long gray beard in there. Used kerosene lamps for light.
The last time I saw that cabin open as a visitor center was in the early 1990s.

Like a previous poster, I drove past your doorstep three times now, and the wife is not too receptive to heading up the highway anytime soon. But....... I'll wear her down. Thanks again!
Keep workin' on her!!

RE: The Alasa Highway yesterday

Joe, the number of business changes the past year is amazing. I haven't seen the likes of it in almost 20 years - in the mid-90s we had a lot of businesses sold, almost every one to a German, Swiss or Austrian. This time it seems to be locals jockeying for position. I'm taking advantage of the rush by selling my place in Carcross - time for a Class C (probably a 27-footer) to wander with.
I got the scooter 2 years ago to celebrate my 60th birthday - got 20,000 km on it already :)

The Alasa Highway yesterday

I've just posted a photojournal of day trip from Whitehorse to Haines Junction and back yesterday, that you may find interesting and perhaps even useful (I found a great new spot for lunch :) ). It's posted on the ExploreNorth Blog.

RE: mail delivery

As a fairly frequent traveler to and from Alaska by RV, this thread got me to thinking about forwarding mail. I can't think of anything I get in the mail that I would have forwarded.
Glad to know that it's not just me! If I only opened my mailbox once a month, I wouldn't miss anything important.

RE: leaving in a month or so for Alaska Which Route?

Is this forum haunted? I was just looking at Sue's picture below that she posted on March 14, but it is dated March 26 and the time , 11.45 is excactly when I looked at it! Or do they just have the wrong date & time on it! :)
That's a live webcam image, so shows the current image/time.

RE: Bicycles in Alaska?

There's endless excellent cycling (even flat-land cycling), but I've seen a lot of bikes hanging from the back of RVs with so much dirt/mud on them that I doubt they ever get used. By the time I got the thing cleaned I would have lost interest and moved on to the beer...

RE: Best day hiking in Northern Rockies of BC?

The Summit Lake / Muncho area along the Alaska Highway has enough great hikes to keep you busy half the summer. I don't know of any guidebooks that describe them, though - Summit Lake has decent signage for the ones there.
