RE: Arizona Highway 98 Kayenta to Page

It's been several years, but my recollection was that Hwy 98 was absolutely no problem at all.

RE: Campgrounds between Tuba City and Kayenta in AZ

In Tuba City there is a decent RV park at the Quality Inn. ...
And right next door is a restaurant that does up one fine-tasting Indian Taco. And just down from it is the Tuba City Trading Post with lots of cool stuff. (There's ample space for RV parking across the street.)
Along the highway between Tuba City and Kayenta is Tsegi. Only thing I've bought at the restaurant there is some fry bread (which was very tasty). Easy parking across the street.
For more info about that route (and many others across the rez), see Fran Kosik's Native Roads.

RE: Campgrounds between Tuba City and Kayenta in AZ

Off to the side is Navajo National Monument, which has a nice, quiet, no-hookup campground. However, our 30-ft. Airstream will fit into only a couple of them, and there are no reservations possible.

RE: THE GOOD

The bus actually does a very good job! We rode them back and forth quite a lot at both Zion and the Grand Canyon, and they were comfortable, easy to enter and exit, and plentiful. And the lack of constant traffic made the experience really nice! This was particularly evident at the Grand Canyon, where the automobile areas were just clogged and congested while the bus area was not.

RE: Senior pass

The former Golden Age pass is no longer issued. You now get the Senior Pass instead. However, your Golden Age pass will continue to be honored.

RE: Tankless HWH retrofit???

Some of the manufacturers have installation and operating PDFs on their websites. I'd recommend paying those sites a visit to find out the particulars.
We do plan to install one in our vintage Airstream, though only after our current water heater dies. That may be a few years.

I use it in the machinery I own that was originally built for leaded gasoline. That includes the tractor and the MG.

It is wonderful without all the cars, isn't it? You'll find a similar experience along the road to Hermit's Nest at the south rim.

RE: Returning to Canyon De Chelly

The canyon is a bit of a shrine of sorts to what happened there in 1864:

RE: Extreme Water Conservation- Share your secrets?

What for the bleach rag? That nice, soft puppy tongue does a pretty good job of removing leftover stuff. Just get it done before your more squeamish guests arrive while you're putting dishes back into the cupboard.

RE: Santa Fe to Taos to Pagosa Springs - Roads?

In Taos, you'll do a straight-thru shot through the plaza area, so you won't have a problem with your 40-footer. (What does become a problem is if you decide to make a turn at the plaza with your rig.)
After you leave Taos, you will indeed go through some mountains between Tres Piedras and Tierra Amarilla (just before Chama). It's a fair climb, but nothing that should cause great problems as long as you're talking about summertime travel. (US 64 through that area is sometimes closed in the wintertime.)

RE: How do you choose destination?

I'm similar to Here'n'There except that it's not gastronomy for us; it's the cultural, historical, social and/or geographic magnificence that determines destination. All else, including accomodations, follows afterwards.

RE: Rv Park Websites - Rates

I suspect that part of it may be that they hire out to some outfit for the website, and the outfit is unresponsive: It's easier not to bother with a rates page than to try to get rates updated on an existing page.

RE: Walmart parking lot stays - need advice please

You're going to have two adults, four kids, and, I assume, half of these folks are not experienced RVers.
Here's my guess: They're going to run short of waste-water space about as fast as you can blink an eye, and some of them may not realize that they can't run the AC without electrical hookups.
Short of some serious training for all concerned before this trips starts, I'd recommend locating places that have full hookups.

RE: US 191 to Chinle, AZ

Are any of the roads on the route BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) roads? Many of them are dirt in places. BIA 13 from US-491 South of Shiprock to Lukachukai (BIA-12) and Tsaile on the way to Chinle used to be dirt over the mountain pass but was paved the last time I drove it in 2007.
We drove BIA-13 last fall over Buffalo Pass. Paved all the way, and the curves are not that dramatic. But I would NOT recommend it to folks with a sizable RV. It is very, very steep. We made it over the pass, but by the time we reached the top, we were under 25 and losing speed, first gear, pedal to the metal. On the way down, again in first gear, but necessarily having to use the brakes way too much. When we got to the bottom, we could smell the brakes easily.
I guess there was something to that warning sign below the pass.

RE: Hwy 89A from Flagstaff to Jerome

We took that route as far as Cottonwood with our 30' Airstream in tow. It was fairly steep and curvy, but not out of the question.
