RE: Towed electric cord

DadD45 asked "don't your connectors have a cap lock?". I did my own installation, so I chose a connector on the car that matches the one on the motorhome, which means "yes, both of mine have cap locks". Works great. And yes, you need to know which end of the cord goes to which connector, since they are both the same. I suspect if you wired your connectors the same then the cable would go either way. I wasn't that smart - besides my cable has gone through many iterations of cars and motorhomes. I just color code one end of the cable to match the color of the Toad - problem solved (of course if your Toad is the same color as the motorhome - you'd have to come up with another approach!!!!) RE: Towed electric cord

We just wrap our electrical cable around the towbar on its way from the motorhome to the toad. The only time we have had with it dragging was the one time I forgot to wrap it!!!! Ed Headington 2005 Revolution LE 2004 Tracker toad

RE: Problem with Pilot/Flying J RV Plus Card

I'd be interested to hear how your card works at the truck pumps when you get your DP. Ed Headington

RE: Problem with Pilot/Flying J RV Plus Card

All of you who have had such good luck with your Good Sam/RV Plus card. Did you fuel up at the RV pumps or the truck diesel pumps? I was given the impression that the card will not always work at the truck pumps if one is getting diesel. For me personally this is a major disadvantage. I much prefer to fill up at the truck pumps - MUCH quicker! Ed Headington 2005 Revolution LE 2004 Tracker toad

RE: 1998 AMERICAN TRADITION C 8.3 L DIESEL

Give Spartan Chassis Corp in Charlotte, Michigan a call. They have all the records on your motorhome chassis, and can tell you whether it is the electronic engine or not. They also might have some ideas on where/how you could add the instrumentation you're looking for. Ed Headington 2005 Revolution LE (previously owned a 2000 American Tradition) 2004 Tracker toad

RE: Foggy Window Repair

I can only agree with others. We've had 10 windows done at Suncoast Designers in Hudson, FL, and are very pleased with them. We did go to them to have the windows fixed. We did 5 each time and they did them all in one day. Ed Headington 2005 Revolution LE 2004 Tracker toad

RE: Florida Snow birding cost

Others have pretty much covered costs down here in Florida. You also asked about travel time. That really all depends on how many miles you like to travel in a day. We have travelled back and forth between Lakeland, FL and Middletown, NJ more times than I can count. We usually take our time and take 3 days. This summer we were in a hurry though, and easily made it in two days. As I said, it all depends on how many hours you want to drive, and how fast you drive!!!! RE: Valve extenders

I use solid extenders. You can get them at most places that service trucks. These do not have pressure inside of them until you press the rod that goes straight through to the valve itself. Never have problems with these. Ed Headington 2005 Revolution LE 2004 Tracker toad

RE: Tampa Fl. To El Paso Texas

I agree with the Texan. We were last on I-10 about 2 years ago, and thought it was fine between Lakeland and El Paso. I20 would be quite a bit longer, and no guarantee it is any better. Ed

RE: Tiffin Allegro Red 2011

A friend of ours has an Allegro RED, 34 feet long, and loves it. Says it drives well, and has had no problems with it during his first several months of ownership. He is planning to take it to Alaska this summer, so he obviouslyhas confidence in it. Ed Headington 2005 Revolution LE 2004 Tracker toad

RE: Slide topper rolling out in strong winds

If your slide topper is a Carefree, they offer an optional locking mechanism for theirs. If yours is a Carefree, you might want to give them a call. Since I installed mine, I have not had any problem with the awnings coming "unfurled". Ed Headington 2005 Revolution LE 2004 Tracker toad

RE: Alaska...concerns...

I certainly understand your concerns, but as others have said, you are actually not as far from "civilization" as you might think. My wife and I are both 75. We traveled to Alaska when we were 68, again when we were 73, and now we are planning on driving back there again this summer. We just love it up there, it is beautiful beyond words. My advice would be if your doctor doesn't see a problem, go for it!!! Ed Headington 2005 Revolution LE 2004 Tracker toad

RE: Pro Pressure TPMS Sending Units

I have heard that battery life on the PressurePro senders is 5-6 years. My units are over 6 years old now and are still going. I have only replaced one sender in these 6 years. I also have been told by PressurePro vendors that the cost for replacement when the batteries die is actually $35. If you get a system with replaceable batteries in thes sender units, the batteries cost about $5 each. If you can get 7 years out of the Pressure Pros, the running cost won't be higher than 7 years of replaceble batteries. Having said that, while at the FMCA rally in Brooksville, FL earlier this month, I purchased a new system, Tire Minder, which actually comes with a coupon that is good for new batteries for the next 7 years at no cost. RE: chassis: freightliner vs roadmaster ????

If you read through this thread, there is an awful lot of posting that basically say "my chassis is the only way to go". As others have said, each manufacturer's chassis drives and handles a little differently. Only you can decide which most appeals to you. Regarding the monocoque or semi-monocoque construction, our Monaco had that and I couldn't see anything better or worse because of that. Our Monaco was a 95 model and it didn't have any slideouts. When you start putting 2, 3, or 4 slides in a motorhome, one has to ask "what is the "monocoque" construction doing for me? When I look at one, and I see strusses down in the basement storage area to make up for the lack of trusses to provide rigidity where the slides are, I have to ask, "am I really getting something here?". As a retired engineer, it has seemed to me that when you are looking at a motorhome with multi slideouts, the best way to get your rigidity is probably with a chassis that provides as much rigidity as you can get. Again, though, each chassis design has its own merits. Only you can decide which is the better design for you. Just my opinion. Ed Headington 2005 Revolution LE 2004 Tracker toad

RE: De-winterize trip prep while still cold - tips?

When we lived up north (in NJ) we often took off in the winter time and did just what you are planning to do. We "unwinterized" the motorhome and just kept the heat on to keep things from freezing. As I recall, I often used to do it 2-3 days in advance just to make sure I didn't have any problems. All that means is that you burn some more propane! RE: chassis: freightliner vs roadmaster ????

As others have said, the only way to get your answer about chassis choice is for YOU to drive both coaches you like and see for yourself. My own personal experience is I first had a Roadmaster chassis. It was fine. Then I went to a 5 year newer Spartan chassis. For my money the Spartan (similar design to the Freightliner - 4 airbags) was head and shoulders better for us. The ride was much smoother. Yes, it was a softer ride, but personally, I'm not looking for a sports car. We used to lead RV caravans, and there were a number of times when our customers were complaining about the wind and how they had to slow down, and we could barely feel the wind. If you compare this post to someone like the Texan, you'll see that we all have different preferences, and the only way to know which one is right for YOU is to drive them yourself. RE: Monaco vs Tiffin

The issue of the trade in value is an interesting one. I agree that in generally I don't worry about what my motorhome will be worth 5 or 10 years from now. Having said that though, the marketplace is a great equalizer. If brand A and brand B have comparable costs when new, but Brand A is worth 10,000 dollars less after 5 years - why is that? Is the market tellins us something there?? Just food for thought. Ed Headington 2005 Revolution LE 2004 Tracker toad

RE: Extension cord for land power

Norman definitely has good advice. The only thing I would add is that when we lived in New Jersey, during heat waves in the summer the power company routinely dropped the voltage in our house to 105 volts and we never had any issues at that voltage. I personally consider my lower limit to be 105 volts. Naturally if you use Norman's advice and limit it to 108 volts, you'll definitely be safe. Ed Headington 2005 Revolution LE 2004 Tracker toad

RE: Electric Hot Water Heater

I had a very similar problem with our Revolution when it was new. Then I remembered something I had read somewhere, and checked the external faucet in the utility bay. Sure enough, the valves were open, even though the hose shutoff was closed. With the valves open, the hot water was being diluted by the cold water. Turned the two handles off, and voila, we had lots of steamy hot water!! Might be worth checking. Ed Headington 2005 Revolution LE 2004 Tracker toad

RE: Changing the oil in a DP

Well, I have to drain in excess of 34 quarts from my C-9 CAT diesel engine. For years I have used a 10 gallon portable holding tank that I purchased from Camping World. Works wonderfully - nice and low to fit under my engine without raising the motorhome, and holds all the oil I need to drain. When I'm ready to dispose of it I roll it out to the car, put in the back, and take it to the recycling center that our county operates. No fuss, no bother.
