RE: Waiting at the Rainbow Bridge

Our beloved Vizsla, Cody, departed yesterday. A wonderful 8 1/2 years Doogie. Even though you hated traveling in the RV, here is a lasting picture during one of our last trips. We will miss you! http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/eeaton1/CroppedPhotoofCody.jpg

RE: Looking for camping around Ahseville, NC.

When you're visiting from Florida, an hour away is close :) Wife flew out of Ashville Airport and it was a hop, skip and jump up the road to the airport from campgrounds.

RE: Looking for camping around Ahseville, NC.

Davidson River Campground between Brevard and Ashville in Pisgah Forest has a few electric hookups but only 2 0r 3 can be reserved; others are first come, first serve. Check out the website and see if you can reserve a spot. Beautiful area and close to the river.

RE: Haylie's cancer is back... RIP

We just got news that our beloved Vizsla, Cody, has LSA at 8 1/2. We have struggled with what path to take and, after considering his (and ours) life-long stress level experiences with vet office visits and tests and needles, have decided not to put him through the rigors of chemo. We would rather he enjoy life to the fullest as long as he remains pain-free at which time we will let him go peacefully over the rainbow bridge. This will be our first expected pet loss and we don't know how many days, weeks or months we have left together but will endeavor to enjoy every hour. He has been the best and most loyal companion we have ever had and the tears are flowing freely but we know we must suck it up and put on our best faces for him. He will be spoiled to no end which will be hard to do since that is what we have done since he was a little puppy. Our prayers are with you and Haylie and we ask that you do the same for Cody.

RE: best west coast FL roads

Agree with your proposed trip if not in hurry as you will go thru several small towns and with slow speed zones; otherwise nice road conditions. A good stop on way north is Cedar Key for an afternoon and evening stopover. Tony's for clam chowder. Eat early, i.e. lunch memu, for best deal on a good seafood dinner. Panhandle area will get very slow but beach views are awesome.

RE: Ever wonder where you site fees go??

Yep, numbers can be very interesting:@ and motives for posting them even more so! I will take the approach that the business venture is what he wants to do, hopefully enjoys it, and gets enought customers at that price to stay in business. Me, I will stay at parks that cost just a little less unless that is the only available room in the area and, if so, limit my stay to one night and move on. Good luck to the OP in 2012.

RE: Weather conditions in Fl, April-June

Our weather down here has been hard to predict last few years but your first date period is the most optimum. Heck, it's in the 80's today and feels like it too!! May and June, the weather will be getting hotter and more humid. If she's heat sensitive and used to high desert/low humidity, beware of the possibility of an unhappy fellow camper.

RE: Campground near Cape Canaveral

If they are full, Brevard County has some campgrounds in Melbourne area that you can try............... http://www.campingspacecoast.com/

RE: Passport America ??

Frankly, I liked CCUSA since they had more campgrounds available for discount price in places we visited. Use it a couple times on a trip and you paid for the annual membership. I paid for my annual membership each year during a single trip. I'm hoping many of the CCUSA parks join up with PA since I am now a member for the remainder of my membership term. Unless you were a member and had bad experiences, trashing them provides very little information to the OP. Speaking of a defunct organization offers even less benefit. Discount clubs are not for everyone as they have restrictions that one should be aware of but if you are traveling during non-peak periods or non-Holidays, they provide pretty good savings. I would look at member parks where you plan to travel, check out parks with reputable rating group (rvparkreviews.com, TrailerLife or similar) and determine if joining will provide you with potential savings.

RE: (Me again) LP usage with furnace???

Can't give you actual usage rate but, depending on where you have your thermostat set, it could be quite high and you might have to refill your tank during your stay. What we do is keep the thermostat low and use the furnace for a quick warmup in the morning and use a space heater during the night. A sleeping bag for a comforter will also keep you warm and toasty under the covers. Our main problem was while boondocking, the house batteries couldn't sustain the blower all night and we got a real surprise early in the morning when the alarms went off and the batteries were too low to start up the generator. We quickly cranked up the engine and was then able to start the genie to rectify the situation. Make sure you unhook your water hoses during the night if connected to a water source.

RE: Ft. Clinch State Park, Florida Site Size

Stopped by in Oct. Lot of overhanging canopies on way in to camping spots. Ocean front was closed for construction of handicapped access improvements. There are many large backin spots around the circle. Saw many large rigs in there during my stay so would think you should be ok. Would check to see if they have openings before driving there tho.

RE: Good Sam Club - any disadvantages?

Although a member, I can't say that I have taken advantage of many of its' benefits except the trip router which has gone through several machinations but now back to one most of us like the best. You will find that campgrounds that give you Good Sam Club discount will also honor PA, AARP, AAA and the many other RV clubs out there. Did use the $5 discount several times this past summer tho :) Good Sam advertising does tend to drive me crazy even tho they say they are going to stop a lot of it. Just haven't seen much of a decrease at my address yet. Like many Clubs of this nature, it is an individual matter and I would suggest that you go to their website and look at the member benefits and see if they entice you to join or renew your membership, if you have joined already.

RE: Elkmont help and advice!

I don't recall many, if any, pull thrus at Elkmont so pad may not accomodate him if he stays hooked up. Unhooked will probably not present a problem. Many at Smokemont are pull thru and he would not have any problems.

RE: Is Savannah or Charleston SC far enough south?

You might encounter a cold front or two sliding down and through but it will be short-lived. Temps could slide down in upper 30's but doubt you will encounter freezing temps for any length of time to incur any freeze damage. If forecast is for freezing weather, unhook your water line for the night in question. However, coastal weather tends to feel colder with ocean breezes so you may have to bundle up for a few hours each day. A small space heater will keep the chill off as well and save a lot of propane.

RE: Whats a good length and brand?

Full-time in a small Class C/B?!?! You really need to reevaluate that. I would think you would want/need a large size Class C or opt for a mid-size A, as a minimum, if full-timing. That would make easy commuting difficult, at best. I have a 24' Class C and would not want to live in it full-time.

RE: Class C best gas mileage?

Depends on many factors, to include load and if towing or not and speed normally driven. Driving over 60 mph seems to have a detrimental affect on my unit to the tune of 2-3 mpg. If you are looking at new units, you won't find many, if any, Chevy chassis as they are no longer being offered on new models effective with 2012 model year. Without getting into a Ford-Chevy argument which will probably occur, I liked the drive and handling of the Chevy chassis over the Ford but the higher CCC was not a factor in our decision making. However, I believe that average mpg will be pretty close over the long haul so wouldn't worry about it for the gas units. Diesel will get higher mpg but will have likely have less CCC and towing capacity. It is about tradeoffs.
