RE: Kansas route and campgrounds along the way?????

Meade has a city park where you can overnight on the east side of town. Liberal has a nice air museum you may want to visit, and they used to let RV'er park overnight in their parking lot. Hutchinson has RV parking at the State Fair grounds with 50amp full hookups for $20/night. If you are on 56 SW of Dodge City there is the little town of Montezuma that has a nice small city RV park with hookups that is very reasonable $5-$10 (can't remember amount for sure). We stayed at the Corral RV Park in Dalhart, TX on our way to Albuquerque last year. It was about $20/night and clean park. This time of year some of the city parks etc. may not have water available. Many turn off the water during the winter months. Have fun on the trip.

RE: Shreveport, LA to OKC

Thanks for the info especially the specific directions on what to avoid to keep out of trouble. I really appreciate it. We've driven through/around Dallas by car and that wasn't much fun. I was wanting to keep farther out with the RV.

Shreveport, LA to OKC

We are traveling from Shreveport, LA to OKC towing 5th wheel and would like to avoid the Dallas traffic as much as possible. Is there a good route to go around Dallas joining I-35 north of Dallas? The map shows a 59/49 hiway to 82 into Gainesville. Is this a good alternative route?

RE: Planning A Trip To Key West, Florida

We are at Key West right now and what beautiful weather. I have not seen any place for boondocking in the area. There are parking areas by the bridges for fishing, but they are clearly signed "no overnight parking". The parking lots for shopping centers and larger stores are also signed "no overnight parking". We pulled a 5th wheel down and are driving our truck into town. The streets are very narrow and challenging to drive in the main tourist area. There are 2 or 3 parking lots with $1.50 per hour parking. We have found no place to park without paying. We are staying at Sigsbee RV Park on the NAS which is great if you are able to use military facilities. I checked at Florida State Parks to try to stay there for part of the time, but those in this area are fully reserved. If you are coming down I-95, we found a St. Lucie County RV park at Fort Pierce/Port Saint Lucie called Savannas Recreation Area for $25. Not too far off the highway and a small quiet area. Many locals and RV camp hosts have told us that February is their busiest time and it is difficult to find open spaces at that time. We've enjoyed just wandering the streets and harbor area of the downtown area and absorbing the atmosphere.

RE: Kansas ~ Its not what you might be expecting - Parts 1 & 2

Love the pics and story about traveling Kansas. Thank you for sharing. Kansas is so much more than what many people have heard. I always remember my first days at Kansas State University and visiting with a student from the East. He was amazed that Kansas had trees and hills because he had been told that it was flat. Of course, the area around Manhattan, KS is definitely not flat. Later I lived in Central Kansas which is flat. I took my students on a field trip to Topeka, KS one year. As we traveled I-70 between Manhattan and Topeka, one of the students remarked, "Mrs. C., I didn't know there were mountains in Kansas." Laughed and laughed when I saw that you included the Smokey Hill River Festival controversy. We took our granddaughters to the Festival that year and saw the Kinsey Sicks. They were really good and the girls still talk about that trip. We now live in SE Kansas and have been exploring the lesser known sites in this area. You've inspired me to do more photo taking and compiling info to share with others. We always prefer the back roads instead of interstates and hadn't thought about sharing the things we enjoy seeing that are not seen from the Interstates. I would like to know the name of the small town where the old cars are located. It is in the first pictures in your second section. I know of a couple of people in small towns that have collections, but this one didn't look familiar to me.

RE: Any Suggestions on good 5 to 8 year old Truck Camper Models?

We have a 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 Diesel short bed with a 1998(?) Lance SquireLite 165S camper and find it great for our needs -- 2 people. The dining area makes into a bed as well as a bunk over the dining area. Both of those are shorter beds which would work for children, not sure about adults since we have never used them for beds. The floor plans were pretty similar on all the small TC that we looked at, however, we felt we needed the bed that runs lengthwise of the cabover (NS bed). That meant the extended cabover which is more difficult to find in the smaller TCs. I am very glad that we made that decision because I don't think we could have been happy with a crosswise bed. The bath is tiny, but met our needs. We didn't use the TC shower to save on water and holding tank space. We used campground showers when possible and sponge baths at other times. Purchased the used Lance last spring from CraigsList for a trip we made to Alaska last year. It was not in our area, but it was well worth the drive to get it. It was in very good condition. We didn't have to do anything to it to make it a great "home" for us on the Alaska trip. I can't even count how many times we remarked on what a great rig for our first trip to Alaska. My DH felt comfortable driving it on the roads including the back roads. We could park about anywhere and enjoy the scenery. We looked at a lot of used truck campers trying to find the one that was "right" for us. It was really hard to find one that was small enough and light enough for our truck because they sold very quickly after listed on CL. I began checking CL several times every day and just happened to find this one right after it was listed. In my opinion the Lance is the best of what we looked at. There are others out there, just make sure that you keep to the lighter models for a 2500 Dodge pickup. I can't remember exactly, but ours is either 1600 or 1800 lbs. We felt we needed to stay under or close to 2000 lbs. After our experience, I wouldn't want to put anything much heavier on our truck.
