RE: Battery

Not using furnace...roughing it out! Haha. I have a Honda eu1000i and found out a bit ago battery checked out fine! No space for second battery. Might make it to Sheridan WY tomorrow. Hopefully an RV dealer can be found, if necessary. Sigh. How warm is the thermostat overnight? Put it down closer to 60-65 (or less) (or off) The 7155 is a slow charging converter. What generator do you have? You should make it with one group 27 but you need a better charging system. Consider getting a 20 to 40 amp portable charger and if there is space for a second battery get it. You should be able to go a full day with a healthy Gr 27 battery if you are only operating the basic fridge, water heater, water pump and some lighting. We dry camp for a full week with a single Gr 27 in the Smokies and run the Fantastic vent fan all night long. We charge with a Honda Eu 1000 for about 3-4 hours each morning and the battery charge current drops off from 10A (starting charge) to 3A by that time indicating that it still had plenty of capacity before starting to recharge. Our trailer parasitic current draw with the fridge and water heater on but no lights or other accessories on is on the order of 0.5 A so that is only 12AH per day If you are going to be dry camping you really need to consider purchasing and learning to use a clamp-on Ammeter to check your parasitic current draw and charging current. Knowing the battery voltage is only half of the information you need to manage your 12V system. Sears carries a nice DC clamp-on that should work well. Dick

RE: Two 6 volt GC Batteries, OR, two type 24 batteries?

You still get more for less with a pair of GC-2's from Sam's club. Best bang for your buck. Best bang, Less bucks. The OP was asking about options to increase AH capacity. Many posters on this forum would have you believe that there are no quality 12V deep cycle batteries available. This is not true. One may decide that paying more for a quality 12V battery or batteries and not having to change their battery boxes is a better option. In my case, a single Trojan SCS 200 Gr 27 (115 AH) provides me with significantly better performance and durability compared to a lower cost generic light weight RV battery and I don't have to make any changes to the trailer's original battery configuration. RE: Two 6 volt GC Batteries, OR, two type 24 batteries?

Assuming the two six volt GC2 will fit in the space alloted Two G-24's at about 75 Amp Hours each 150 Amp hours, since these are Marine/Deep cycle you should keep them at least 3/4 full giving you only about 45 usable amp hours. . You can get 100AH with the Trojan 12V SCS series Gr 24 battery for a total of 200 AH for a pair. Dick

RE: Two 6 volt GC Batteries, OR, two type 24 batteries?

I have had very good results with Trojan 12V SCS series deep cycle batteries. The 24 is rated at 100 AH and the 27 is rated at 115 AH. The 27 weighs very close to the T105 which tells me it has about as much lead /AH. Two 27s will give you the same AH capacity aas two T105s. We currently operate with a single SCS 200 for our dry camping and use an Eu1000i every morning to maintain charge. Dick

RE: Getting spammed with Norton installed.

Norton used to be the industry standard for protection and file maintenance. USED TO BE. Now its an evil piece of software used to slow computers down to the point that PC owners buy new computers when they didn't need it. Use any other virus protection to solve your problems. I suspect that most negative Norton comments come from those that have not used the product in years and love to bash a product based on some experience years ago believing that a product never changes or improves. I work for a large defense contractor and we use Norton on all our networked PCs. We use Norton Internet Security on all our PCs/laptops at home. We buy the 3 license version at Sams for $50 rather than renewing at a much higher price. Our PCs use either Windows XP Pro or Windows 7 64 bit. In addition I checked PC Magazine and found it gave Norton good reviews. Dick

RE: Walmart Maxx 24DC Battery _ Seems Good

94 amp hours from a group 24 is a deep cycle. Probably the 100 hour rate. DC 27 is a bit bigger if needed and will fit. On edit: Actually the 94 would seem to be Reserve Capacity (RC) minutes and not amp hours. Still a deep cycle. Just don't compare the wrong units and expect additional performance. 100AH is possible from a GR 24. Trojan rates the SCS 150 @100 AH for 20 hour rate. The Gr 27 version is rated at 115 AH. Dick

RE: Batteries going flat

It would be a good idea to check your current draw with the furnace on and off to see if your consumption is within expected range and to estimate how long you should be able to operate with your two batteries assuming they are both healhy. A clamp-on ammeter is ideal for this measurement. You may find that you have unexpected parasitic loads. Next I would verify that each battery can maintain 12.6V open circuit for a couple of days unloaded. Finally you can replace your batteries with Trojan 12V SCS Grp 24 batteries. These are high quality (they do cost more) 100AH batteries that weigh more than most generic 12V deep cycle batteries. I use a single Trojan SCS Gr. 27(115 AH) battery that keeps us furnished nicely with 12V power when dry camping. We do not use our furnace at night (too noisy) but do run it in the morning when we get up. We also run a Fantastic vent fan all night when we are dry camping in the Smokies during the summer. We also recharge for a few hours every morning to prevent significantly draining the battery. The clamp-on ammeter is handy for checking charge state by monitoring charge curent. Dick

RE: Direct TV Local Channels

I get my "locals" using the 18" oval dish with 2 down leads on satellite 101.. I also receive them on my MP1 Winegard Carryout. Is this a function of location in the country? I am in Washington state? X2 I have gotten the local channels as far away as 250 miles. Mike X3. I get local (Dallas/FW)standard definintion channels with my round dish and Direct TV. I was able to get our local channels as far as Galveston. Dick

RE: Rechargeable Batteries

you forgot to mention the discharge rate which in my opinion is as important as the current capability 80% power retention for over a year!!! as soon as these came out i threw ever other rechargeable i have out. i have close to 200$ in eneloops There is even a new high capacity AA Eneloop (black case). It is low discharge but not as quite as low as the white AA. They are also more expensive but they are rated at 2500 mA. Dick

RE: High efficiency AC and Honda 2000i generator

I have been able to run our Coleman 13.5K BTU PS with a single Honda Eu2000i in 96 deg weather in Dallas. The Coleman PS series appears to have a scroll compressor but I don't know if that helps the start up. The generator sags some on start up in the non econo mode but does not go into overload, Dick

RE: Voltage regulator for TT?

Years ago two of us actually measured the AC amps with reduced voltage and found the the amps went down. Many on these boards were in denial. Motor theory and common sense says that a motor delivering 1 HP will draw more amps when voltage goes down. However, where does it say a AC motor will deliver the same power when voltage drops? Nothing like real data. The motor probably does not deliver the same power with reduced voltage. If you think about it, when the power companies do a brown out in the summer it reduces power consumption so that would lead one to think in general current would go down. Dick

RE: Voltage regulator for TT?

Old wives tale, with the A/C the increase in voltage will cause a decrease in amps. That is not the whole story. While an A/C unit that is being supplied with lower voltage does draw more current it is also true that with an autoformer being supplied with lower than 120V input voltage the input current will be higher than it would be for nominal input voltage so that the product of input current and input voltage is approximately the same as the product of output voltage and output current. The autoformer can not create power but transforms it trading lower input voltage for higher input current. Dick

RE: wife wants to watch Satellite TV at night......help.

CA Traveler - Nope - I have better things to do with my time than to do research on something as nit pickey as this. If Delco's engineers choose to call one batery a deep cycle battery specifically to be used with a trolling motor than I am satisfied to call it a deep cycle battery. If they call another battery a "combined cycle" battery for use also as a starting battery, then I will call that battery a combined cycle battery as well. I really do not feel the compelling need to be the ultimate authority on everything. I with you on that. Funny you don't see 6V trolling motor batteries but I suspect those batteries get deep cycled in a trolling application as much as an RV application. Trojan also has 12V deep cycle batteries that weigh essentially the same per AH as their T105. Some day I am going to section a golf cart and a quality 12V deep cycle battery and compare the plate difference. I just can't figure out what to do with the battery acid. Dick

RE: WFCO 45 amp converter

It is a big deal if you don't want to run your generator all day. When you use an inverter instead of the generator so much, you need fast charging on a bigger battery bank Two different camping styles. Yes we enjoy a creative and simple (from an energy standpoint) dry camping style in national parks adapted from our years of tent camping that lets us get by running a EU1000i generator a few hours in the morning while we fix breakfast and clean up before we head off for the day. When dry camping, we perk our coffee and do fine without a microwave and TV even though we always carry a Direct TV dish and receiver along with a 23 in. LED TV in the trailer. If we want to watch a movie if its cold or rainy we use a portable DVD player good for 4 hours on a single charge. When we are in state parks with electrical power for a weekend we use a different style. Frankly I enjoy our simple dry camping style the most because we use it in the national parks that have a natural beauty unmatched by our state parks in Tx. I work on technical (electrical engineering) problems all week long and the last think I want to worry about is if my converter is going into boost mode when camping. Dick

RE: WFCO 45 amp converter

It really is no big deal if your converter does not go into boost mode. I have been dry camping since '99 and have never had our converter go into boost mode and I am still a happy camper. I recharge every morning and the max current after powering up the generator is 11A for a single Trojan SCS200 gr 27 battery. I use a clamp on Ammeter and discontiune charging when the current drops to 2-3A. I personally prefer a more gentle recharge. Maybe when our WFCO needs replacing I will put one of the other "better" brands in but until then it more than meets our needs. Dick

RE: Bluetooth GPS Receiver for Laptop

I have been using a $40 Holux receiver with Bluetooth for the past 4 years. Works great and the Lithium-ion battery recharges off a USB port with a standard USB cable. Once it locks in I put it in my shirt pocket and it continues to feed location data to my laptop or to my camera. What PC operating system are you using? Dick
