RE: LEAF PACK UPGRADE OR SUMMO SPRINGS

I went with the "SuperSprings" add-on self-adjusting leaf springs this time around. I've been very happy with them. They stabilize the camper side-to-side as well as fully inflated airbags and I never have to mess with them. Same here, installation was easy and noticed a sway reduction too.

RE: Okay, I was wrong....bought a dually

First off, I apologize for stirring up a ****storm over this. That was never my intention. I was just blown away how much better the dually drove compared to our old truck. Wasn't implying that a SRW won't work and in fact, I thought I did mention that our old truck served us very well. For those wishing us well, thanks very much. We're headed out this weekend and can't wait. Basically you are right. Big truck campers work "better" with big dually trucks. Basically that is a fact. Brad or others like myself really don't want a dually and have mid size TC's where a SRW works just fine. I was just amazed even with my pop-up the difference between a 5th wheel and putting on a truck camper. The difference between towing a heavy load vs sitting it in the back of the truck bed is night and day. Even those of us who don't want a dually are happy for a fellow TC'er who has a set-up they really like and it's working for them....congratulations.

RE: Boondocking end of June in Moab??

The camping spots along the river (north and south of town) are a first come first serve and will probably be hard to get shady spots in the summer, especially on a weekend. There is also a small daily fee. I love to boondock but that time of the year is hot so if you have AC I would look into a RV park. Yes it may cost more but if you don't get a good nights sleep your vaction may not be as fun. The La Salles are great but if you plan on being in Moab everyday you will not like the drive. My experience was similar although June might not be as crowded as spring or fall. It was crazy trying to find an open camping spot along the river...actually I never did find an open spot.

RE: Water pump runs & runs

Try connecting to city water supply until all the air is out of the lines. That's what I have to do on my 5th wheel every time I completely drain the fresh water tank. On my TC if I open up a faucet for a couple seconds and let water run, then turn off the faucet, it seems to pick up and prime right up.

RE: Any TC Haulers with a Dodge Ram Truck????????????

It's a common well documented problem on Dodge 4x4's. I'm getting ready to install the Mopar steering upgrade kit (came out in 2008.5) and new ball joints. Carli and Dynatrac make the best ball joints.

RE: getting leveled, is there a "best way"?

I use the same yellow tri-leveler blocks as Kerry4951 and use a cheap 6" torpedo level. When I'm boondocking, quite often a couple shovels of dirt moved is quick and simple.

RE: tips on loading a tc...found this

You have enough room that you can be TWO inches off?? Didn't quite follow the principles of how lowering one side first would somehow make the whole camper jump laterally (especially if there was a rubber mat in the truck bed) but...didn't sound good to me.

RE: Suspension Question

Another thought is that under the driveway conditions you mentioned, I think it's more front sway than back.

RE: Do you still love your old truck?

This is my first big truck and diesel engine and I treat this truck differently than any other vehicle I've ever had. Every other I considered them as a 7 to 10 year ownership. This one I treat as 20+ and I've put more mods into it than all others combined. Partly it's the high cost of the new trucks. Spending money to improve it or fix it seems much easier when new cost 50-60k. Plus I don't want to get rid of my 2005 5.9 engine.

RE: Suspension Question

Only in the driveway?? wouldn't be a concern for me. Mine does a little sway when going into the driveway at an angle too and otherwise handles great. Wouldn't spend money if it's only a driveway issue.

RE: Happi Jack NOT under TC Warranty!

That's seems pretty normal. The TC manufacturer warranties the frame, if you will, and all the associated parts get their manufacturer's warranty. You have problems with your water heater, you contact Suburban or Atwood. You have a problem with the toilet you contact Thetford. If the jack is clicking but still functional can you take the TC off the truck and rest the TC on stands and then remove the problem jack?

RE: Another truck test 3/4 ton

I read a bit but as soon as they start testing HD trucks by drag racing, I quit reading. They clearly have no idea what HD trucks are for. If they drag raced while pulling a 10k trailer or max payload in the bed that would be fine. They did, read the performance $ data part. They pulled a 12,000 load. Chevy won every pull contest. But good grief the Chevys interior is as plain as you can get. Considering they all were $60,000 trucks the Chevy looked cheap. It will be nice to see what they do to the interior of the 2013 models. I know that interior features don't make a better towing rig, but for someone who's not brand loyal and looking for a top of the line truck, the Chevy certainly takes a back seat to the other two. I guess I was trying to say that a drag race pulling a load isn't a stupid thing. Simulates merging on the freeway or going up big hills with big loads. I thought the writers comment about the Dodge/Cummins "having two fewer cylinders...put the enormous Ram megacab at a disadvantage" funny. Maybe that's why I don't put a lot of weight into truck comparisons done by a car mag.

RE: Why boondocking?

What I found interesting was that "free" posted the highest percentage. All of the best boondocking spots I've been too I would pay for if all of the other benefits are present; the peace, solitude, closer to nature, beauty, etc.. You give me the choice of a free campground with all the kinds of amenities or a campground that I have to pay for but it offers some peace/solitude, and closeness to nature, I'll pay every time. I'll take the inconvenience of carrying out my own waste/trash any day over a noisy, crowded campground.

RE: Thetford cassette question. Should I buy an extra cassette?

There isn't a bathroom nearby to dump the cassette? I would call Thetford for the extra tank.

RE: This may be weekend we pull the trigger!

You'd be smart to get a campground in the area and stay for a few days. Then start making a list of items that have to be fixed or addressed, if there are any. Excellent suggestion and recommended to me by forum members when I picked mine up. Seems like there is always something that comes up that you don't catch until you use if for a day or two.
