RE: Easy-to-digest calories??

I've never met a dog that didn't love bananas, and they are a nutrition gold mine. You could feed him peanut butter and banana slices.
I know a few people who do various dog sports with their dogs who give them dry cereal to keep their energy up before a competition. One friend who does field work with her dogs gives them peanut butter sandwiches (no jam) as an "energy bar"

RE: Pets while driving

Please don't let your dogs ride loose in a moving vehicle. It is no safer for them than for a baby of the same weight. Use a crate or a seatbelt harness.

RE: giving a pill to a difficult dog

Since corgis will eat the paint off the wall if you let them, I've never had to do anything more than drop the pills in their food bowl. Diva is currently on two different pills for an ugly UTI, and last night I watched as she cleaned her bowl of everything but the big orange antibiotic, then paused, looked at me, and then gulped down the last pill for dessert!
We keep clear liquid benadryl... I think it is actually the Walgreens store brand, and a syringe. Works well for doses without food.

RE: Our dog made us pay for our mistake

Diva's first trip in the motorhome was just an overnight to a local RV park to shake her down before our first road trip. She walked right into the crate we kept under a side table, where dear old Beth had always ridden, and decided that was where the corgi girl belonged. Hopped in and went to sleep.

RE: Dogs and Agility

USDAA helps the international organization find "loaner" dogs for the handlers to compete with so they aren't deprived of competition.
He gets lots of compliments on his contacts, and won't dare take his rear paws off of one until he gets the go ahead. Fast dogs just have a tendency to miss that crucial yellow area (as you know), if you don't train them that way.
OK, that makes perfect sense about the handler situation.
Corgis can certainly be fast (Diva is!), and a lot of corgi people were using 2o2o but started having back and shoulder problems. Standard is on hold for us till late fall. Our big goal is a clean JWW run at our National specialty in September. There is a Performance Triathlon with a big award to the dog with the highest cumulative score across any three performance events, so we will take on Herding (a regular sport for us, and Buddy's main gig), Obedience (my personal favorite, and Diva's main gig), and Agility (I don't like it as much, but need the points!) to round it out.

RE: Dogs and Agility

I'm confused. The dog is competing for NZ, here in the States? With a different handler?
Enjoyed several of your video clips. Nice contacts (we, like most corgis, use running contacts, though, or we'd never make time)

RE: Ideas to get dog to stop digging under fence & out of yard?

I'm not a fan of widgets in place of training, but on some things the safety factor makes a quick fix a necessity.
I'm not, either. But this goes beyond the "quick fix" realm. Most dogs dig when bored, unsupervised, or both. Kind of hard to replicate those conditions if you're standing right there. And you can't make a training correction if you're not there.
Although, in the long run, what the dog probably needs is a job.

RE: TOTAL CHAOS>>>>

She was considered a perfect example of the breed standards.
Sorry, but no perfect example of any breed shows that level of dog aggression. You admitted that you allowed her to keep charging and barking at each dog until the chain finally broke. Not getting any sympathy here, if your dog comes charging at mine I will do whatever it takes to protect my own.

RE: Stopping dog from playing keep a way

Not to belabor the point, but train, train, and train!
First order of business should be a basic obedience class. After that, see if any clubs or schools in your area offer a little course called Reliable Recall, or something like that.
Not only do you want to avoid chase games, but you also don't ever want to call a dog to punish them. Dogs aren't dumb, and they equate agitated/upset owner with punishment, so you have to keep a cool head.

RE: Dogs and Agility

So glad when somebody decides to get out and do something with their dogs!
PM sent to OP to clarify a couple of things...
Diva and Buddy have some agility training. Pippin does not participate because his knees and elbows are just not up for it. For my training and trialing dollar, I'd rather be doing obedience or herding, but we will be out this summer in a few agility trials.

RE: exercise pen

2nd on the expen cover. They keep dogs in and non-dogs out.
You can also get an expen with a door so the cover isn't a big inconvenience.

RE: A Canine Epilepsy gene may have been found

This is encouraging news. Hopefully a DNA test is withing reach soon.
A few years ago when researchers found DM (degenerative myelopathy) to be similar to ALS in humans, the funding and resources really started coming together and now there has been a fairly easy DNA test for quite a few years, which has helped responsible breeders make huge strides in reducing/eliminating the number of dogs born At-risk for this awful disease.

RE: Pics or vids of your smart dog

Going into the pond to bring the ducks out of the pond and moving them into their pen (picture dog swimming behind ducks and not allowing the ducks to swim past the dog).

Water Polo for dogs!
Could be a new course... water instead of a field.
I have a few videos of the corgis being smart. This one is Pippin competing in the Utility class in AKC obedience. That's considered to be the PhD of the dog world.
Pippin in Palm Springs
This video is of Buddy in a herding trial this past weekend. It was not a good run. We did pass with a 75.5 out of 100, but there were a lot of mistakes--mostly mine, but Buddy was also being a little naughty. When Buddy disappears from the camera, it was first to chase a couple of Ravens out of the arena, and then to mark the bush where he found them. That cost us 7 points.... 4 for being "off contact" and three for the marking. (yes, Mark, I know I gave two consecutive incorrect flank commands!)

RE: What do you use to brush your dog.

Our trainer's flock is mostly Katahdin and some crosses. Mostly white, but a few lovely dark brown/black girls, and one very ill tempered wether who is white with large red spots.
That one tried to head-butt Buddy the other day...got himself a nip on the nose for his actions.

Other shepherds we know have even had quads from this breed of sheep. We prefer large twins.
What breed are you breeding?

RE: What I really do

Samantha,
It is possible to not loose money on this hobby. It looks like our hobby turned business will turn a profit this year (we won't get rich).
Mark
Congratulations. I know that's a big accomplishment. My trainer teaches for the sole purpose of breaking even on her rent and feed costs, and struggles to break even with the cost of hay rising like it is.
Being that I live in the city, and drive 90 minutes one-way for a lesson, I don't see myself breaking even any time soon.
A good friend now has a nice property and 15 head of really nice Barb/Dorper crosses that I can work whenever I want for free, but she is 3 hours (and half a tank of gas) away.

RE: shih tzu for a camping dog????

Properly bred Shih Tzus are double-coated. A single coat is considered a fault.
Oops! I stand corrected!
Not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but this is an excellent resource for anyone considering a dog, not just a Shih Tzu.
Also has a lot of breed-specific info... on the left hand side, click on "Before You Get A Dog"
