Do not buy Chinese tires, they are of poor quality and several importers have gone bankrupt on recalls. Our MHs use truck tires which are highly loaded compared to car tires meaning less margin for poor quality. A rear tire blow out on a DP can do thousands of dollars damage to the radiator, intercooler, and body. Front blow outs are a life and safety issue. There are several reputable commercial tire suppliers and for MHs BFG seem popular as an OEM tire although I've used Toyo and Michelin.

RE: Climbing Grades, Advise Please

Down hill are all about managing speed. I use the same gear as going up or one gear lower. I use the engine brake to manage descent speed, and use the service brakes to keep control speed within a range. If my target descent speed is 45mph I will apply the service brakes fairly strong at 50mph until my speed drops below 45mph, and repeat as necessary. Usually only need a few service brake applications on a descent. YMMV but I use 4th on 5-6% grades and have needed 2nd gear on 10% grades. You can also watch semi trucks for a clue about the descent grade, loaded truck will descend slower than unloaded trucks; your weight to braking capacity is closer to a loaded semi than an unloaded one. There is a great book on mountain grades in the west ("Mountain Directory West") that will help you plan your trip.

RE: Texas drivers license?

Do not confuse CDL license requirements, which is a Federal Commercial Drivers License administered by the States, with a State's requirements for a special license for high gross weight vehicles. Two separate issues. Most vehicles over 26000 lbs have air brakes. Most states with gross weight license requirements follow Federal CDL requirement except for the medical exam and certificate. Quite whining and get the Class B non-commercial license if your state requires it for GVWR of 26000lbs or greater. As a side note it was easier in my state to get a Class A CDL than a non-commercial Class B, but I can downgrade to non CDL at any time.
