RE: Garmin GPS 1490 Nuvi problem

Thanks for the instructions HouseApe. What a hassle for the average user to get a GPS to works as it should.
Here is one of the most aggravating problems I have with my 1450. Mine will not cancel the destination once it is reached. If you go to the main menu the "cancel" button is missing so when your trying to go home all you here is "re-calculating" until you turn the GPS off. A software update fixes it for about a month, but what a hassle.

RE: Best Buy sales gimick...... or not?

The Calibration DVD can be bought all over the place for $25. I just saw a display of them at Best Buy. On Ebay they are also pretty reasonable. They DO work! I calibrated my new Sony and what a difference in the picture quality. It was free service when I bought it at Circuit City....I sure miss that store.
It is a simple process of inserting the DVD in your DVD player and following the on screen adjustments instructions with your TV remote. It is a shame that Best Buy charges an additional $175. to have a Geek push your buttons for you.

RE: Garmin GPS 1490 Nuvi problem

I have the 1490LTM and in 7000 miles have zero issues.
The one thing I have done is put the USA map on the SD card. The internal memory is full out of the box. Maybe that is the difference ?
That is true, One of the Tech at Garmin showed me how full the memory is and had me remove all of the foreign languages and foreign keyboards.
It didn't help, my 1450 still crashes. However, I am going to take your suggestion and try moving the map to the SD card. Good idea and thanks for adding a suggestion.
How did you move the map to the SD card, drag and drop with SD card out of the Garmin and inserted in the computer?

RE: Garmin GPS 1490 Nuvi problem

I have had a 1450LMT for about two months now with no problems. When I opened it the first thing it told me was there was a software update it needed. Did the problem show up for everyone right away or did it take a while?
Interesting as there are over 2,000 4 and 5 star reviews for this model on amazon and that was one of the reasons I purchased mine.
My first one worked fine for about 3 months, then it kept freezing when in route. Garmin replaced it and this one crashes about once a month. I have downloaded every update available, nothing has worked. I have to do a complete reset to bring it back to life. I have had two 1450 lemons. I wish the stars on Amazon would take the two junkers I have owned.

RE: Garmin GPS 1490 Nuvi problem

I have the 1450LMT, same unit just without Bluetooth. It has been the biggest piece of junk Garmin ever made. I have had your problem, locking up in the middle of a route, etc. etc. My original unit was replace, but this one is just as bad. Try a software update, if that doesn't do it a reset will solve the problem, but if it's like mine, only for a short time. Good luck with yours.

RE: Momma's Laptop Screen Gone

I just sold my hardly used Dell that I spilled a glass of wine on the keyboard and fried the motherboard and hard drive. The computer shop I sold it to put the screen in another customers Dell for $75.00. Might check with a couple of your local computer shops, not Best Buy.

RE: Mossberg says to hold off on laptop purchase

Amazing, my new ASUS X53E laptop for $499. has the same features.
I would really appreciate it if you could elaborate on how Win 7 and touchpads interact
This might explain it better than typing a reply.

RE: How to get Dish Network working with roof mounted dish

What model King Dome and what model Dish receiver? When I upgraded from my old Dish 311 receiver to a newer 622 and 211k the King Dome was to outdated to work with the new receivers. I upgraded to a Winegard Traveler dish.

RE: Mossberg says to hold off on laptop purchase

But when all is said and done, it is the wave of the future.
Is that wave a gesture command :)?
Do the apple mac air and mac book make use of the touch pad to do pinch and other screen controls?
Same question for Win 7 and the touchpad?
I only have XP.
Other than On/OFF, there are no buttons on the Mac laptops. The built-in trackpad is use for communicating with the computer and applications. For example.
A one-finger single tap, is a left click.
A two-finger single tap is a right click.
Scroll up or down is accomplished by moving two fingers up or down
Pinch for zoom in or out
Rotate: use finger and finger to rotate
There are many others. Some are application specific, some are universal.

RE: Mossberg says to hold off on laptop purchase

This might be the reason the laptop I just bought dropped $150. Perfect for me. I hung onto Windows 98 until the bugs were worked out of XP..that was at least service pack 2. I don't regret buying the new laptop last week and probably won't when Windows 8 is released. My big fingers don't care much for my smart phone or tablet touch screen.

RE: (Winegard SK-3005 TRAV'LER) Back up plan for installation

All these comments are beginning to give me second thoughts about my decision. I won't decide till I get the package and then decide. But if I do get it installed do I go to an RV dealer or a Direct TV installer?
Direct TV will not touch an RV and a Direct TV contract installer does NOT know RV's Take it to someone that has installed several Travelers. In my area that was Camping World, but I did have problems with the job.

RE: (Winegard SK-3005 TRAV'LER) Back up plan for installation

I had my Travler professional installed, but I was onsite. That sucker is heavy if you plan on setting it up each time you want to watch TV then storing it. The installer used a lift to put it on the roof, it was that heavy and awkward.
If you have health problems that lifting more than a fork can be a problem, the Travler would NOT be my choice for a portable dish. Let us know what you think after it arrives.

RE: GPS

So, I am not the only one having problems with the new Garmins. I have owned Garmins since the early days of the 2610. However the last two have been pure JUNK. The 255W died 1 week out of warranty. The 1450 LMT has been replaced once and the new one crashes every couple of month and has to be completely reset to get it working again. I keep the older 7200 in the MH because I don't trust the newer models.
Most will probably agree with Garmin but the only way I would get another one is if someone gave it to me. My first one crashed just after a year and it was more to fix than replace so I bought a bigger one based on all of the reviews. It crashed within the first few months I had it. I got it back last month and it crashed again last week. I rarely use it but when I do I want something that works. No more Garmins for me.
On the other hand, our 7-year old Street Pilot 2610 still works, but is no longer supported by Gamin. Our 3-year old Nuvi 750 still works and travels in one of our cars. it's just not a good RV GPS. For the RV, we now use the Dezl 560, which, for RVing, is the best Garmin has made. It's only 5 months old. I guess time will tell us about its longevity.
Tom
My 2610 also still works as well as the old 7200 which I will keep in the MH as it does not freeze in the middle of a route as my new Garmins are now doing. I am sure many have new models that are working perfect, but me I am now two for two in the junk dept with the newer models from Garmin. I still use Garmins because of the easy of POI loading and I will now look at the Dezl 560 from your recommendation.

RE: What is the best GPS to use with a RV

I still run the old Garmin 7200 in the MH because of the 7 inch screen. I have bought several new Garmins since the 7200, but they all wind up in the toad as the 7200 i so much easier to see and still works great. I load all of the new POI's I want so the 7200 is always up to date for me.

RE: Waiting to order my Direct TV dish cost me over $100

When I bought my Traveler at Camping World 2 years ago they were $1,199, now they are now close $1,400. I guess the Traveler is getting caught up in the price of fuel, "it costs more to get the materials made and shipped to us."

RE: Watch my Yankees anywhere

One question though, can I connect my phone to my HD television in the TT so I can watch them while camping, on my tv?
Does your phone have an HDMI port? If so yes. The Motorola Razr has an HDMI port and can connect to a HDTV.

RE: Pay as you go

If you have a smart phone there are several apps that will locate the satellites and the line of sight for you. I use "Satellite Director" which is a free Android App. Stand in front of the RV activate the app and see if you have a clear line of sight for the Sats. location.

RE: In-motion satellite antenna- which one

The reason for not many posts on in motion domes is they are becoming obsolete. They are not HD, so many have gone to HD type dishes that are not in motion. With DVR's many people record hours of Nick for the kids to watch while traveling. With smart phones you can stream about anything you might want to listen to for NFL.
I upgraded to HD a few years ago and the dome went along with the old CRT TV's.
