RE: Bear Viewing

We have seen the bears in Hyder in late July and early August. It all depends on the salmon run. In 2008 the salmon run was late and the salmon were just starting up Fish Creek around the 12th of August. In 2005 we were able to see bears the end of July. I wouldn't try to get there before the end of July to see the bears.

RE: Keeping the fridge cold on the Inside Passage ferries?

I use a Canon 100-400 telephoto lens on a Canon. The camera I had for those pictures was the xTi Rebel.

RE: Keeping the fridge cold on the Inside Passage ferries?

We took the ferry from Prince Rupert to Haines stopping at Ketchikan, Wrangell, and Juneau on the way. We stayed about 4 days at each stop. Yes, we did have to get up in the middle of the night to catch the ferry, but you probably can work around that if you are very flexible. Our favorite stop was Wrangell as there are no cruise ships or traffic lights. Our one regret was not going to Sitka, but it is not on the direct ferry route and we did not take the time to go there. Our longest time on the ferry was twelve hours from Wrangell to Juneau. We took a cabin as it was overnight. You don't have to get a cabin as you can sleep in the lounges. Our fridge stayed cold enough overnight. The other issue is a pet. If you a traveling with a pet it must stay in you RV and there will be times you can go down to walk them. We did not have a pet on the ferry so someone who had traveled with one will have to address how well that works. You can drive to Alaska without a problem, but the ferry adds a different dimension to the experience. You can take the ferry one way and drive the other which is what we did. The ferry is expensive, but our entire trip for three months including the ferry in 2008 did not cost any more than a our two week trip to Europe this year, so the trip to Alaska was a bargain.

RE: Returning by Ferry, Where Do I Start the Journey?

We did the trip on the ferry going north in 2008. We really enjoyed Wrangell since you do not have the added people from cruise ships as you do in Juneau and Ketchikan. I believe you can also take a smaller ferry from Wrangell to Peterburg. We also stopped at Juneau and Ketchikan but did not enjoy those cities as much, plus we had been there before. We did try to stay out of the cruise ship area in both Juneau and Ketchikan. We were sorry we did not stop at Sitka, but as someone said it is not on the direct route. We got off at Haines. Going south you can get on at either Skagway or Haines and the drives to both of those towns are beautiful drives. If you get off at Prince Rupert you can also get to Hyder to see the bears if your timing is right. I also recommend the Icefields Parkway.
The ferry can be costly, but we enjoyed the four trips on the ferry as it added to our Alaska experience.

RE: Anyone else watching this and planning for 2012?

We are tentatively planning our 5th trip to Alaska, 3rd driving, in 2012. We are looking at filling in the gaps of where we have been and what we have seen on the previous trips and include stops at some of our favorite places. We will probably take the ferry for some of the trip as we did in 2008. There is so much to see and do we still won't cover it all in 5 trips.

RE: Newfoundland and Nova Scotia and RAIN

We were in Nova Scotia and PEI last year the last two weeks of August and the first week in September. The only rain we had was the one day when Hurricane Earl came through PEI. We did have some cloudy days, but no rain except for Earl. I think when you plan a vacation you just have to hope for the best with the weather and prepare for the worst. Take rain gear and hope you don't need it. We spent one of the coolest and rainiest summers in Alaska in 2008 and still had a great time.

RE: PEI - bridge vs ferry

We took the ferry onto PEI last year as we were coming from Cape Breton, NS and the bridge when we left as we were heading back to the States. The trip on the ferry was really enjoyable. It was much cheaper to leave PEI by the bridge.
