RE: Renting an RV, what should I bring ?

BTW - I still prefer "Doubloonies" to "Toonies". I liked the term "Teddy" as our $2 coin has a bear on it.

RE: F150 torque convertor

I know that in both my vehicles (a 2006 GM minivan) and the RAM 3500 - there is a designed in feature where the tq converter won't lock up until the trans fluid reaches a certain temp. The tq converter is electronically controlled, so the PCM (computer) controls it's operation. Running unlocked creates heat, so it is designed not to lock up until the fluid gets to a temperature where the trans can operate properly. I'll bet that is what's going on. Should be mentioned in your owners manual. This is exactly what's happening. It's nothing to be concerned about. It's explained in detail on page 212 of the owner's manual. Your vehicle’s automatic transmission is equipped with a special shift strategy that insures maximum heater performance during cold weather operation. When ambient temperature is 23°F (–5°C) or below and the engine coolant temperature is below 100°F (38°C), light throttle upshifts may be slightly delayed. Once the engine coolant temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) the normal shift strategy will resume. This is normal operation and will not affect the function or the durability of the transmission. If the normal shift strategy does not resume once the engine coolant temperature reaches the normal operating temperature, or if the downshifts and other throttle conditions do not function normally, see your authorized dealer as soon as possible. I let the truck warm up for 4-5 extra minutes this morning and it seemed to behave like normal. Thing is it hasn't been especially cold yet.

Maybe I just worry a little too much. If it gets worse, or misbehaves for longer periods, maybe I'll take it in.

F150 torque convertor

I've got an '06 F-150 5.4L with 155,000km's on it. Bought it new, and have taken care of it, in my opinion. Have changed out the tranny fluid 3 times (every 50,000km). For the past month or so, I think the torque convertor has been slow to lock up. It now takes about 1 mile on our street before it locks up in OD when starting out in the morning. Our road does have some ups and downs to it. Until it locks up I feel a little shake in my butt. Once it does lock up it seems to hold okay if I'm doing 80kph (50mph). Slower than that and the torque convertor isn't locking very well. Any ideas? I'm planning to take it in to a tranny shop to check out, but don't need any more big repair bills this year. So far this year I've had sparks plugs done (2 broken off) for about $700, passenger side exhaust manifold replace due to exhaust leak about $700, rear diff clutches change out about $800, rear brake pads, rotors,a dn calipers about $1000. Too much. I drive it like a granny and all the miles are essentially highway. I guess I just wanted to vent.

RE: F250 locked in 2nd gear

Did you happen to have the gear shift selector in 2 instead of Drive. That would lock it in 2nd.

RE: white and rogers thermostat

Nope, still here. Just haven't read any replies that are worth my time replying too. The thermostat in question, is a digital, battery operated home use, non-programmable t-stat. Please follow the link on the original post. The thermostat works as it should all summer and most of spring, fall, winter. When the temperature falls in the trailer to below an UNKNOWN temperature, the furnace tries to start whether or not the t-stat has batteries in it or not. Not usually a problem as this is when the trailer is in storage with the propane off, and 12V system shut down. I notice when I plug the trailer in and turn on the 12V battery switch during the winter once a month to keep the battery charged that the furnace tries to start then shuts-off on safety because the propane is shut off. A couple days ago when I posted thism the thermostat was set at 45F (as low as it would go) and the selector had been switched from heat to off, and the 2 AA's were pulled. Temperature in the trailer was 43F. Yet the furnace fan had started. I pulled the face plate, so only the terminal block was mounted to the wall and the fan shut down. The furnace is an Attwood I believe and has a 2 wire system. These wires have been wired to the Rh and W terminals of the thermostat. So, I believe I won't have a problem this weekend. The t-stat works as it should to maintain the setpoint, it's just why does it want to work when it is cold, even when the batteries are pulled.

white and rogers thermostat

A few years ago I posted about installing a white and rogers thermostat in replace of the rv thermostat. The link below takes you to the discussion link to old topic In the summer time and early fall it behaves normally, but come the cold winter the thermostat wants to turn the furnace on even without batteries in it. Not usually a problem as the propane and rv battery are normally turned off. But now we want to do a cool weather trip and the furnace blower is running even though I don't want it on. Pulling the faceplate seems to be the only solution right now. When heating the trailer the thermostat runs normally. I am wondering if there is a cold weather relay in the t-stat that activates the Rh to W circuit for emergency purposes.

RE: Cold camping in the Hybrid

Elctric heat, PUGS, and reflectix all help. Without the PUGs I expect you'll get a lot of condensation. All the 110V recipticle in the trailer are probably all on the same 15A circuit, so what I do is plug one heater into a recipticle and a 2nd heater into the microwave plug. That or run a separate extension cord out the bunkend to the power post. We have 3 bunk ends too and have been out in late October where the evenings can get pretty cool. There are a couple hybrid owners past and present that actually have done Winter camping in a hybrid here in Ontario. Also, if it would be more comfortable, turtle the rear bunk and have that person sleep on the couch.

RE: F150 or Trailer problem?

Thank you everyone. I had the rear diff fluid changed in February. Looks like they may not have put the right friction modifier in there. I will go to ford and get the friction modifier and differ fluid. Hopefully that will fix it. I do not want to rebuild the rear end. I suggest you get this looked at soon. I ignored the problem for 25,000 miles after my mechanic changed the diff fluid and modifier and Ford then told me I needed new clutches to the tune of $900. Ouch. Not a warranty item as Ford claims the clutches are wear items.

RE: Price on Jayco X21M

Check the pricing at RV Direct, they are a Jayco dealer. And you can either pick-up, have it delivered, or meet it anywhere in between.

bearings and seals for a Jayco 232

I have an '07 Jayco 232 hybrid and was wanting to purchase a spare set of axle bearings and grease seals. I have a Dexter Manual, but it lists part #'s for 9 different axles, however I can reduce that list to 1 of 3, 2000lb, 2800lb or 3500lb. My Jayco dealer who is an hour away couldn't tell me which axle I have as there are a couple different available for my model year. Thinking about it, it is probably because there is "lift kit" available for my model year of Torsion axle. I wanted to purchase the spare bearings and seals from a local RV parts center but they don't know what I would have either without physically looking at the bearings. I expect that I have the 2.8K axle as my trailer GVWR is 5500lbs, has 13" wheels. Does anyone here know what Dexter bearings and seals I should get? I did see a white sticker on the axle tube with a 7 digit number. The numbers are identical on each axle. Thanks

RE: Greasing wheel bearings on a Jayco 19H

Hmmm, I followed the directions in the Dexter manual that came with my trailer. The directions stated to add the grease while rotating the wheel until you see the new grease coming back out the front. So that is all I really did. So now I have to take them apart and get rid of all the "extra" grease? I do the same thing. I believe there is a void between the bearings and when they are manually packed this void is empty. When you use the EZ zerk, you end up filling the void as well. I don't think you have a problem.

RE: Too Much Tongue Weight For My 2010 1500 Chevy?

I don't have a chevy , but instead an F-150. My TW is around 850 lbs and I need to use all 8 washers. On my truck, when I start loading up the bars, or by raising the tongue while connected, I notice that the shank starts to tilt upward taking the slop out of the connection. This makes the use of 8 washers necessary. My bars are pretty tough to get onto the L-brackets even with the snap up tool. Maybe I am just afraid to take the tongue up much more. I say use 8 washers until you can get axle weights on the truck connected and not to see where you are.

RE: cell phone use in the states

We currently use a "pay as you go" cell phone from Rogers. Here at home, it works well and costs us very little. But we are planning a trip to florida in the fall and the roaming fees are pretty high, $2.00 per minute. We would like to be able to use this cell phone for making reservations at campgrounds on the way down and home, possibly a few call home to "check in" with the family, and receive a phone call from our golf cart rental guy. What does everyone suggest? Can we pick up a cheap prepaid phone at Walmart when we cross the border? Would this phone then have long distance rates if it has a NY phone number and being used in FL? need some help on this one - we are cell phone newbies. Just to clarify, we are not full timing or even snowbirds. Just trying to plan a 2 week trip to Florida and still have a cell phone that won't cost a fortune.

RE: flat screen TV in Jayco 232

well, look at that. The tv shelf is bigger than I remembered. Looks like the new TV is going to fit after all. I just need to make an angled base for it to sit on in order to correct the viewing angle to remove the dark screen.

RE: flat screen TV in Jayco 232

We have an '07 Jayco 232 HTT. There is a TV shelf between the wardrobe and overcounter cupboard above the dinnette. We have since bought a 19" flatscreen and I would like to mount it to the side of the wardrobe. Any thoughts on how to do this? I have purchased a wall mount bracket for the TV.... I strongly suggest uploading three pictures - one of the area where you intend to mount the TV, the second of the inside face of the wardrobe location, and the third of the inside face of the over-dinette cupboard. I just finished this mod about a couple of months back and may be able to give you specific advice. Mounting something like that to the flimsy wall of an RV cabinet will not yield the same results as a mount inside your home, largely due to the dynamic nature of the loads on the arm. I am going to a SP tomorrow morning, however, so my input may be delayed depending on how soon you can get the photos to me. I'm really thinking of just laminating the entire inside wall of the wardrobe with 1/2 or 3/4 ply.
