RE: RV Consumer Group provides RV reviews..any experience?

I used their info when we bought our RV. I found their data to be very useful. I was able to search their data looking for the features we wanted in an RV. For example I wanted an RV around 30’ that wasn’t overloaded when the gas and water tanks were filled. Believe it or not some RV’s are near weight capacities when the tanks are full and you are on board. I also was looking for an RV that could tow a 6500 pound boat. It was easy to search their data and find a list of RV’s that met our criteria. If you already have narrowed your search to one or two brands, then don’t bother. But if you want to find many different RV’s that meet your criteria then it helps. Once you have narrowed your list then you will want to go look at and drive the RV’s to find the one that is right for you. JD

RE: What did you do to your Class A MH today???

I winterized our RV by driving it from Washington State to my brother’s house in Central California. We are back in Washington now but after Christmas we will pick up our RV at my brothers house and head to Arizona.

RE: Thumbs up to Coach Net

X8. We broke down in Oregon. Coach net provided a tow to the nearest Ford dealer for repairs. The Ford dealer could not do the repairs so Coach net towed us to an RV dealer for repairs. Great service but I hope I never need their help again.

RE: Car Hauler Towing balance the weight ?

I tow on an open 18’ Featherlite trailer. I bought a scale to measure my tongue weight. I tow a Mazda Miata and a Subaru Legacy wagon on my trailer. To get the proper tongue weight for these two vehicles I must back them onto my trailer. If I try to pull on forward I have too much weight on my tongue. If I place the vehicle back far enough so that my tongue weight is correct then my vehicle is too far aft to tie down on the trailer. But if I back on, putting the vehicle engine aft of my trailer tires, I can center the vehicle between my tie down points and have the proper amount of tongue weight. My wife thinks it looks silly to have the car facing backwards but it does give us the proper weight and balance for our trailer. By the way, the picture below was taken before I weighed the tongue. Now I back onto the trailer. My Miata is light enough, and small enough, that it doesn't make too much difference. Placement of the Subaru does make a difference. Safe Travels JD

RE: What did you do to your Class A MH today???

Installed two new Tough Top Slide Awnings today. It took me about four hours to do the job. I had applied caulk to my old awnings so it took some time to remove my old awnings. I also cleaned the slides under the awnings before I installed the new awnings. Pictures. JD

RE: to much junk mail

I did read in a recent Good Sams Magazine that they had received the message about too much mail and they were going to make an effort to consolidate their mailings.

RE: California Gas Nozzles

Last year before we headed to California I read about gas nozzle problems in California. We arrived in CA in December and left in April. Never had a problem filling up in any gas stations. We drove the length of CA, north to south going down and south to north returning home to Washington State.

RE: to much junk mail

AARP stopped sending me junk mail after I started returning all of their prepaid mailers filled with their offers that I tore up. I made sure they could retrieve my name from their mailings. Now I seldom see anything from AARP.

RE: AARP

AARP bombarded me with junk mail. I sent them letters saying that I wasn’t interested but their junk mail just kept coming. I started returning all of their prepaid return envelopes telling them no thanks. They stopped sending junk mail. JD

RE: Medications

I don't know if your VA doctor will, or can, do this. My prescriptions are running out. I called the VA to set up an appointment with my doctor. They set me up with a teleconference with my doctor. I don't know it VA doctors are allowed to do a teleconference for schedule II meds but you can always ask. JD

RE: Medications

I too get my meds from the VA. I don’t get any pain meds but I get a controlled substance that, when it comes to my house, I must sign for it. Sometimes the VA sent this controlled substance by the US Postal Service and sometimes the VA sent it via UPS or Fed Ex. I talked to the VA pharmacist and ask him to send it only via the US Postal System. He was able to do that for me. When we travel I use the Good Sam’s Mail Forwarding service. There are others and I suspect they all work much the same. My meds come to my home address and my post office forwards my meds to Good Sam’s. Good Sam’s accepts delivery and forwards my meds to the address I provide them. My controlled substance prescriptions are for either 6 months or 1 year depending on when the VA doctor wants to see me again. I believe pain meds cannot be prescribed for that long of a period. I believe others stop at VA hospitals and clinics to renew their prescriptions. Depending upon the VA facility you may be able to pick up your prescription while there if you have an hour or two to wait. I found this link to a VA memo on the subject. It is in governmentese and is not easy to understand. It appears it would be helpfull if you call ahead to give them time to pull your records down onto their system. I don’t know if this helps. Good luck. JD

RE: Red Max Pro

You can search Lowes inventory on-line. That is how I found my two gallons of RMP #3. RMP was at a store that I had gone to and searched but it wasn't with the other cleaning supplies. I printed the inventory sheet and took it with me to the store and I asked a clerk where I could find it. On-line inventory said they had two, one gallon jugs. She had to call a manager. It was stored on the end of an aisle well away from cleaning supplies. And there were three, one gallon jugs. When I left they had only one gallon but I guess their inventory said zero. I did find some stores with 5 gallon jugs of RMP but I didn't think I would ever use that much. I only did the top and front of our RV. This past weekend we were out with our RV club. I liked the way the front of our MH shined. The front of our RV was starting to become dull. Now it looks better than it did when the rig was new.

RE: winterizing lp tank

Another reason to fill your propane tank is in case of an emergency. A few years ago we had a bad storm in the Seattle area and our power was out. My elderly mother was living with us at the time and I didn't want her to get cold. To keep her warm we moved into our MH. I didn't fill our RV propane tank for winter stowage so I drove to our local propane dealers only to find that all of them were sold out. I ended up going to Camping World and buying an Extend a Stay and picking up a bottle of propane from a grocery store.

RE: Trailer or Tow Dolly For Car & Motorcycle

I have an 18 foot Featherlite open trailer. It has worked well for me. My trailer has a rock guard that would probably take space away from you planned use.

RE: Upgrading Televisions?

Msmith1199 Good catch. No, the grove is not enough to keep the TV in place. We took a short trip, about 25 miles each way to buy gas at a discount and to see how the TV travels. To remove the TV from the grove I tilt the TV forward and lift it up. After rattling down I-5 the TV tilted forward on its own and started making a rattling noise. I have made a wooden clip that fits behind my sound bar and in front of the TV. Hopefully this will keep the TV from tilting forward. We will try it tomorrow as we are going to a local State Park. I also thought about bungee cords. I believe they could work. I have seen other installs on the internet that uses Velcro. Another uses wooden straps that he screws in place before travel. JD

RE: Upgrading Televisions?

I just replaced our CRT TV in our MH. I asked our local dealer if the the original CRT TV was rated for RV’s. He said that it wasn’t. Perhaps that is why it failed after 6 years. Our dealer had flat screen TV’s for sale and I asked if they were rated for an RV and he said no. We purchased our replacement LED/LCD TV from Best Buy. A LED TV is mostly the same as a LCD TV. The difference is LED uses LED lights to backlight the screen and a LCD TV uses florescent lights to backlight the screen. And a LED TV is slightly lighter and thinner than a LCD TV. I told Best Buy that I was going to install it in an RV and I was concerned about cold and vibrations. They said there shouldn’t be a problem and suggested that I buy their warrantee and told me that if the TV failed I could go to any Best Buy store and either get it fixed or replaced even if installed in an RV. I also asked both our RV dealer and Best Buy about installation. Both would install. The dealer wanted $500.00 and he would weld up a custom TV mount bracket. I believe Best Buy installation was about $200.00. They had one guy at that store that did RV installations and he would have to look at the RV ($100.00 to look) before committing to do the job. Both would block the cavity that housed the old CRT TV. I ended up installing my own LED/LCD TV. See pictures here. Good luck on your project. JD

RE: Tip for making oxidized fiberglass gel coat really POP!

I used Polyglow on my 1973 boat 5 years ago. I was going to buy more Polyglow to do the front end of my MH and redo my boat top. I was advised of a post about RMP. Used it on my MH and it worked very much like Polyglow on my boat. The front end and top of my RV looks great with RMP. Will RMP last like Polyglow? I don't know. After 5 years the top of my boat needs to be redone but the sides still look great. I know, the directions say to add a new coat of Polyglow each year. JD

RE: Washing Waxing the Class A

I just finished applying Red Max Pro 3 to my roof and the front of my RV. It is great for fiberglass but I would not use it on full body paint. JD
