RE: traving with dogs

We travel with a Sheltie and the only drawback is she sheds - a lot. We probably spend 10 minutes a day rolling ourselves down with the gummy rollers. About once a week we roller the carpets and everything else. Katy is a great traveler & we wouldn't think about leaving her at home.

RE: What Spare Parts / Consumeables Should I Carry

I learned the hard way to carry a small sturdy plywood square - mine's about 1" X 14" X 12" - to put under the jack if a tire needs changing. Anywhere off the pavement, most ground surfaces will not support the weight of the jack lifting a Roadtrek axle.

RE: Hello from Canada

Welcome! We went to the maritimes last Spring and loved it. Made it all the way to Red Bay, Labrador & wanted to go further but the roads were too bad.

RE: Portable Air Compressor

We've had this one for a couple of years and have been happy with it:

RE: Roadtrek 190

This discussion is one of the reasons I never tell anyone what I've paid for something. My motto must be: "Buy high - sell cheap" and I've discovered it's really NOT fun when someone points out how you could have bought it cheaper. And it will ALWAYS happen! :)

RE: Batteries in front pass-through storage of TT?

Hydrocaps on golf cart batteries can allow you to go months between refilling the battery with distilled water.
You mentioned the Hydrocaps - I read about them and just ordered a set but have been a little skeptical. Do they really work?

RE: Adding electrical plug?

I was thinking of running the new power through the undercarriage. Should I get the heavy duty weatherproof wire or just run some plastic conduit?
It depends on how much physical abuse the wire will be subject to. If it were mine and it would be exposed to flying rocks or dragging, I would put it in well clamped down conduit. If it's tucked back into the undecarriage and not exposed, I'd just use the exterior cable, well clamped down.

RE: 93 coach house 192ctb wiring

Do you also have an inverter feeding those outlets? Maybe a breaker is tripped on that?

RE: How to stay safe at night

We've stayed overnight comfortably at Walmarts all across the US and Canada. There have been a few where after checking out the parking lot we moved on because we could tell it would be noisy or there were too many loiterers. There has only been one where we left in the middle of the night. It wasn't because we were afraid for our safety but that it was just too loud with all the young folks and their hot-rod pickups cruising the lot.
We travel in a class B and can crank the engine & move out at a moments notice without unlocking a door. That in itself takes the anxiety out of overnighting in the public arena.

RE: Plenum Gasket

I did this repair to a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee with what was then called the "318 disease". Not a job for anybody but a gear head. I bought the parts from the Chrysler/Jeep dealer. Whatever the composition of the parts, they must have been ok because I put another 100k on the engine with no further problems.

RE: ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS _ NEW DOMETIC RECALL

We were camped next to a trailer in Kentucky whose two door Dometic (don't know the model/serial#) caught on fire while they were off visiting another camper. By the time we noticed it, it took three fire extinguishers and the local fire department to put it out. A lot of damage - probably totaled their trailer. Bad business....!

RE: Alternative Generator ideas for Roadtrek

Our Roadtrek is somewhat of a hobby for us - we call it our "magic carpet" - I'm doing something to it almost every day. I've installed a valve that allows me to run treated gas when I'm exercising the Onan and it's made quite a positive difference in the way it runs. A vehicle like this requires a lot of maintenance to keep it and us happy and I don't view the Onan as that big a deal. The payoff is when I push the button and it starts and gives us power.

RE: Front Brake Vibration

I experienced brake shudder near the bottom of a 2 mile 7% grade. I decided to go with Raybestos "Premium - Advanced Technology" rotors and NAPA "Severe Duty" semi-metallic pads. So far they are silky smooth. I've been in the NC mountains but I haven't been down a really long steep grade yet. If they fix the problem, I'll give details of what I bought.

RE: macerator operating switch

I haven't done it, but I went out to look and here is how I would approach it:
Do to the location of the original switch, I'd leave that one alone and wire up another switch in parallel with the original. I'd mount the new switch on the bracket where the black/grey valve handles are located. The main challenge would be locating where on the 12V supply wire coming from the fuse panel to splice into. I didn't dig around this morning to figure that out.

RE: Raising the RT 04 Pop on the Chevy

Hi Pete,
I had forgotten that you put on the Tuftruck coils.
I'm doing my brake job now and am noticing that the bumper stops are right down on the suspension.
Did you put them in yourself & if you don't mind telling me - what did they cost?

RE: Raising the RT 04 Pop on the Chevy

We have a 05C210P which had lower ground clearance than your 190P has. I added a 1-1/2 inch spacer between the axle and springs and then added the Air Lift kit. With about 30# in the Air Lifts, it raises the rear about 2 inches higher than the "stock" height. If I know in advance that I need more clearance, I can add more air, up to 100#. Not as much clearance as a Tiger, but better than it was.

I've decided to go with Raybestos "Premium - Advanced Technology" rotors and NAPA "Severe Duty" semi-metallic pads. I'll post how they have worked when I get them on and have gone down my first 7%+ mountain grade. IF... they fix the problem, I'll give details of what I bought.

RE: Brake Problem - RT 05C210P

Please excuse the arrogance, but I know how to drive in mountainous areas. The incident that prompted me to suspect I had brake issues was an 8% grade, 2 miles long. I had slowed my speed to 45mph and had downshifted to 3rd. I was using "trucker" braking but the brakes began a light shudder. When my speed built to about 55mph and the brakes began a hard shudder, I downshifted to second gear and between brake applications and the downgearing I held the speed to 60 but the brakes were jerking badly at the bottom. After a cool down period, all the shudder is gone.
I'll ask again if there are any recommendations for "up-graded" brake components.

Brake Problem - RT 05C210P

At 52k miles we are experiencing brake problems on long, steep (8%) grades. At about 2/3's of the way down the brakes begin to shudder and this gets more violent as the brakes get hotter. I'm hearing on other forums that this is a characteristic of the stock brakes on the mid-2000 Chevy van 3500. My question is, does anyone on this forum have recommendations for rotor and pad replacements? I've looked at the Power Stop brand on the internet and the NAPA offerings, but I have no clue what will work the best for the money. Any ideas??
