RE: Any Prov. Park CGs in Ontario/Niagara Falls Region??

Camping Bugs, Sandbanks PP is very nice.....high dunes and a warm sand beach. We haven't been for several years but used to go quite often. Great beach for kids.
Enjoy your time in Ontario!

RE: Any Prov. Park CGs in Ontario/Niagara Falls Region??

Good day Campingbugs. There are no good PP parks here in the area. Kilbear, Algonquin, Kilarney PP's are the good ones and they are 4 to 6 hrs north of the falls.
While I agree that there are really no good provincial parks in the Niagara Falls area, and Fifty Point is probably the best option for a public park (as mentioned by another poster), you don't have to travel 4-6 hours north of the falls. There are several PP's on Lake Erie that we are very fond of: Port Burwell PP, and Long Point PP. As far as Lake Ontario is concerned, the small beach at Fifty Point is quite nice, or you have to travel quite far east to Sandbanks Provincial Park. JMHO.

RE: Huntington Beach (SC) State Park

We Just Book a trip for Aug to Huntington State Park and just curious if there is WiFi available in the campground?
Most, if not all SC State Parks appear to have WiFi. (Other states, take note!)
When you log on, you see a drop-down list of all the parks, and the passwords for any given period are the same for all parks. (The password is available at the office/store).
The CG at Huntington is a bit too far from the office/store to be able to access the WiFi. OTOH, many sites at Myrtle Beach State Park are WiFi accessible since the camping loops are closer to the office/store.

RE: Ft Fisher

Not many good CG choices there from what I've tried to find.
We've camped several times at Carolina Beach SP just up the road from Fort Fisher, and found it quite pleasant and inexpensive. Unless it's been upgraded recently, there weren't any hookups, but that was OK for us.

RE: Adding coach battery,need assistance

I am entertaining the idea of agm batteries or an optima.
Some time ago, we tried an Optima as a replacement for our type 24 house battery but found that it just didn't have the capacity (only 50 A-h if memory serves correctly). Fortunately, Costco took it back, and we replaced it with a cheaper flooded-cell battery (Kirkland brand from Costco, made by Johnson Controls, type DC24). It's rated at 95 A-h which serves us well, and they typically last three years which isn't bad for ~75 bucks. These batteries are admittedly a "compromise", as they're the so-called RV/Marine type, but are sealed, and don't require maintenance which would be hard to do in our older Roadtrek due to the rather poor placement of the battery under the floor.
The bottom line: if you have limited space, be aware that size-for-size, the Optima type as well as some other AGM's have a smaller A-h rating than a conventional flooded-cell battery.

RE: Pennsylvania Turnpike with a Class B

Thanks to all for the useful replies.
The reason for my original question is our attempt to find a "less mountainous" route from Southern Ontario to Myrtle Beach. (I don't mind the mountains of WV, Fancy Gap, VA, etc., but DW is determined to find an alternate route, which I believe I've found, using the PA Turnpike. From what I've read, the PA Turnpike "flattens out" the mountains, and the road from Cranberry at I-79 to Breezewood seems to be OK for the "B" even though there's the tolls. (In Ontario, we have probably one of North America's most expensive toll highways - the 407ETR - so in comparison, the PA Tpk seems "reasonable"). However, I will investigate how we Canadians can get EZ-Pass since we travel in the US quite often.

Pennsylvania Turnpike with a Class B

We're not familiar with the toll rates on the PA Turnpike. Is a class B (Roadtrek) considered a passenger vehicle, or do they charge more for this category of RV? Thanks.

RE: Four Mile Creek State Park Camping

Your camping fee covers your entrance fee for the length of your stay. It also covers your parking fees at the State park parking lots in Niagara Falls. Four Mile Creek is a great place to stay while exploring the area.
As an added bonus, it's ALL New York State Parks, not just Four Mile Creek, that allow you to park free at the State Park in Niagara Falls. Last summer, returning from Darien Lake SP, we stopped in Niagara Falls, NY and just showed our permit from Darien Lake. What a great deal!

RE: MH - Propane Tank Sticker (Ontario)

Some taxicabs and other vehicles run on propane so we always look for the stations that have a vertically-oriented propane tank and actual filling pumps that look similar to the ones for gasoline.
Nobody has ever asked to see a certificate except for a place that does gasoline-to-propane conversions, and I suspect they were trying to trick me into paying $100 for a so-called re-certification that would take 15 minutes. (I refused the "offer", but they still filled up the tank!) The law here in Ontario since the Sunrise disaster is very unclear, and leaving it up to the TSSA seems odd, IMHO.

RE: Did you ever do something truely stupid to your computer?

The stupid thing we did was to continue using the "bloatware" McAfee so-called virus protection that came "preloaded" on our Dell Inspiron laptop, and actually paying for a year's renewal. Now that's stupid, considering the free alternatives available (we now use Microsoft Security Essentials). Not only did McAfee slow the computer down so that it was barely crawling, but MSE found two trojans the first time it was run. McAfee hadn't detected anything! :(

RE: Heater and Converter Housing

Our 1996 190 Versatile has the same configuration, and we haven't noticed any problems. We did however replace the Magnetek converter as we found that this old single-stage technology was detrimental to the house battery life. The replacement is a Progressive Dynamics 45 A unit with the "charge wizard". You might be mistaken that the heat you feel on the metal housing of your Magnetek is coming from the furnace; it's more likely being generated within the converter itself.

RE: Maiden Voyage

THEN, went to dump at the rest area and there is this huge curb to go over with the sewer pipe. Needless to say - gravity and pressure worked against me in addition to a wimpy clamp, and there was s--t all over the place. I tried to recover as quickly as possible and just hold the tube with my thankfully gloved hand to not pollute things too much, but come on! If only there was video!
No video, but we can all watch Robin Williams in RV to see "how it's really done".:E Sounds like you got off easy!!!

RE: Made in America

Bosch dishwashers (I know it's a German company, but most of their dishwashers sold in the US and Canada are made in a North Carolina plant). I think that most other so-called "domestic" dishwashers are actually made in Mexico.

RE: Need storage near Toronto

Dan, we can recommend Self Storage 6 that CoMoCo referred to above. We normally keep our RV in the driveway, but were having the outside of the house painted, and used this storage facility for a short-term period. The owner/manager is very friendly, and the place is secure. I seem to recall that it was the least expensive facility, but this was several years ago.
Since I assume you'll be flying out from Pearson International Airport, you'll want a place that's on the west side of Toronto. 401 traffic along the top of Toronto especially heading east can be brutal.

RE: Traveling to Canada for 3 days

It's strange that far fewer Americans than Canadians have a passport, especially when the US ones are good for 10 years, but we Canucks have to renew every 5 years! I'd strongly urge the OP to get one as it's by far the best form of ID at the border crossings.

RE: Washington DC area campgrounds

Four of us went to Cherry Hill in August a number of years ago, and we were glad to have electricity for the A/C. We didn't realize how incredibly humid DC can be at that time of the year. For DW and me inside the Roadtrek, the A/C drowned out the extremely loud noise from the Beltway, especially when the 18-wheelers used their air brakes, but for our son and a cousin in a tent (on our postage-stamped site), the 24/7 Beltway noise certainly had a negative impact on their sleep!
We'll visit DC again, but we definitely won't go in August, and we'll pick a quieter location like Greenbelt or another recommendation made by previous posters. Take a look at Google Maps; you'll see how very close Cherry Hill is to the Beltway!

What great news! The old service centres were, IMHO, a terrible embarrassment to all travelers, not just RV'ers. I guess it's been worth the wait!

RE: Myrtle Beach State Park or Huntington??

We are at Huntington Beach State Park right now wrapping up a 5 night stay. We also stayed at Myrtle Beach for New Years weekend. Here are my thoughts:
Both offer a great condo-free Grand Strand beach experience with no crowds and no development.
-MB is closer into town and town activities
-MB campsites are uniformly wooded and have nice cover
-MB campsites are a bit closer to the water
-HB has many spacious spots with large lawns and privacy
-HB has a HUGE stretch of beach
-HB has Atalaya, birding, alligators, etc
-HB has a great gift shop
-HB has miles of great flat roads, perfect for bikes, walks and rollerblades
-Both are alcohol-free, a trade-off for the natural setting
These are both great parks and we've been debating all week which we like better!
X2 with additions:
-MB is close to the airport, so there's some daytime noise. There's also some military air traffic including helicopters which can be exciting, especially for kids.
-MB has very good wifi service at the store and at the pier store.
-MB is a bit closer to groceries with a Food Lion across the street (a nice bike ride).

RE: Can you charge laptop with standard inverter ?

I picked up a DC power supply for our Acer Aspire One Netbook at a ham radio flea market for $5.00. :) It converts 12 VDC to 19 VDC. I've never seen a schematic, but I suspect there's a DC to AC conversion (to raise the voltage) and then back to DC.
In the past, I used a MSW inverter to charge the netbook and before that a laptop, and have concluded that the "not pure AC" from the inverter shortened the computer's battery life quite significantly.
