RE: yellow stone

We went from Mich in2010 out I80 back I90. I 90 is a much easier drive. Personally, I just don't get get the "where to stay" issue. Wherever you stay, it will become your "base" to see all the park you can. So if you stay in the north, you will drive to see the south the east and the west sides of the park. it all equals out in the end, unless there is one side of the park you don't intend to visit. We did not have "hours of travel time". Okay, we did. The same amount everyone else has as they make their way from side to side in YSP. We stayed at Grizzly west YS and I highly recommend it. I'm a major penny pincher but i can't drive 1500 miles and not know I'm going to have acceptable accomodations. It was worth every penny!!!

RE: St Ignace or Mackinaw City area Michigan

We love Wilderness SP and its only a quick 10 min? drive west from Mackinaw city. We found it a pleasant break from the touristy bustle of MC. One section has sites which are beachfront. We found Mill Creek to be way too close together and the mile long hike to the showers not worth it and you have have your fire in a 10 quart drain pan. I feel the Island trip is the same time from either Mac city or St Ignace. Aloha SP is one of our favs and we hoped our secret:) An easy drive from Mac city its a nice park with a nice lake. Enjoy

RE: Coughing remedy, anyone got one?

Let me expand a little:3 trips to two docs plus several phone consults. Cough is not just chronic it is literally every 30 secs or so-non-stop. It is much worse at night. She has NO congestion or mucus. Tried tussin and delsym, etc, 4-5 dif cough drops, various teas with honey/whiskey. Only sleep she gets is in my chair after she literally coughs herself to sleep. Yet, doc says he's doing all he can but is now trying to get her in to a specialist, but tommorow is Friday so I don't see that happening any too soon. MD doc says its a "viral" bronchitis that will NOT respond to antibiotics. Can one become addicted to coughing?

Coughing remedy, anyone got one?

Daughter (teen) got a head cold that went to her chest. For three weeks shes been coughing non stop. Has two inhalers, got steroid shot and pills, syrup with codeine, even pill for emphysema coughing, chest xray revealed nothing other than "inflamed broncial tubes". Dr says its a virus that antibiotics won't fix so wait it out. She literally coughs non-stop, has no voice, sleeps in an easy chair for maybe 3-4 hrs. This is going on the end of 3 weeks. Tried steam vaporizer/showers, everything. Any "home" remedies?

RE: Why don't parents...

You need a license to have a dog but not to have a kid! Its just plain ignorance and laziness by the parents. There were more than a few times that we walked out of the store or never even got to the restaurant if the kid(s) blew a gasket! They learned that tantrums got them nothing. Its not about stress of parents or tired kids, its about being rude to other shoppers/diners, etc. And we're not that rude to ruin others events.

I've been "outsourced"!

Just found out I'm being outsourced. The company "no longer wishes to do that kind of work". After 21 years with a perfect department and personal record. This, from the company that just sent us an email that "motivated emplyees are its most valued and best asset". The company is spending millions to build/renovate local entertainemnt facilities! I will be reduced to $10+/hr with no benefits. this, after selling our RV in '10 because I feared this(half the money's gone). The only "good" part of this is that I busted my hump the past 15 years and paid off my debt. the bad side is I can't retire til I'm 70. I've long said I have the "last good paying hourly job in Mich." Well, Its gone. Rant over.

RE: From MI To Yellowstone... What to See and Where To Stop ?

I'm jealous! We went two summers ago, almost exactly the same-family of 5, same ages, in fiver, in June. We left June 13 as soon as school got out. I went out I-80, 1st night w of des moines, 2nd night in Glendo WY, 3rd in Cody. Two nights there then on to YS for 5 nights. Stayed in Grizzly in West YS, (highly reccomend it, I have daughters and cannot make 100 gallons of hot water in a 5th wheel!). Then went to My Rushmore for 3 nights. The home via I-90. Several obervations:***We went early and the weather was a gamble but it was beautiful for us but, the crowd size DOUBLED every day we were there. Chicago? I must've missed something because I certainly didn't "drive through" the city! If on 80, you bypass all metropolis and other than potholes, cruised right on through! I wanted to make reserves for stops on the way but if I was making good time I wanted to be able to keep going. this worked for the most part with only one nail biter the second night (private message me if you want details). Get a Woodalls and use it. Staying in YS: I don't care where you camp, you're gonna drive every day to see one side or the other. I went too far to not know that I had first class reservs. Is it really worth saving 10, 20, 30$ to ruin a once in a life trip? Duration? sounds good to me. We only took one day trip to Tetons. If you're looking for "mountainy" then the Tetons are your place. But for us Mich flatlanders they all look good. We spent 3 nights in Mt Rushmore area and I feel 2 is enough. Just my opinion. Mt Rushmore area and Cody were a little too touristy and fudgee for us. but, whatever. Personally I would've used one of those days to see the Badlands area. Some will say you need a month and if life was a fantasy thats how long we all would stay but reality is time is limited. I hope to go back to the Badlands area in the future. We came home I-90 to 35 south and back around the way we went, to Mich with no problems. 90 is a much easier drive thaN 80. I drove 21 hours straight through from Rushmore (I'm nuts). I would be glad to share details with you if you like. Just private message me. And continue to "mine" this forum as there have been many past discussions that I found useful.

RE: need help with our trip out west

When we went to Yellowstone from Mich in 10 we ran out of time and had to blow off the Badlands. After driving through on the way home I wish we had stopped and spent some time.

RE: Week in Cody, WY - too long?

Went in 2010 stayed at Ponderosa. I can see all I want to see in two days in Cody. Very "touristy". The museum is great if you reaaaaly like guns. They have every one imaginable, but it was very hot and stuffy(?) The shoot out skit put on at the Irma Hotel was basically ruined by the noisy Harley's going through town, (no, it was not bike week! just regular traffic). The rodeo was 45 minutes of the clown telling jokes and 20 mins of rodeo with one, yes one, bull being roped! It depends on your agility. I would rather spend my time in Yellowstone because I went to see nature.

RE: Trust vs. Will

Not a professional here just a "trustee". My folks estate is in a trust, every bit of it. The land, money, even the checking accounts. I was a "succesor" but due to their failing health recently became a "co-trustee". There are some who say all you get from a trust is a fancy leather binder for $3,500 and can accomplish the same things with wills. I disagree. My folks "own nothing", the trust owns it. And when we updated recently the atty did a "pour over will" which covers the incidentals i e the lawn mower, the garden tools, etc. There will be no probate when they pass.

RE: Suggestions for Mackinac City Area MI

We like Wilderness State Park which is 11? miles straight west of town. Two loops of park, one literally right on the lakefront. Sounds like a long ways out but its not. And after a day of the "fudgie" crowds and traffic its nice to get away from town. Mills Creek is too close and crowded for us even if it does have a few bridgeview sights.

RE: Our job growth here leads the whole USA

I guess I'd need a definition of a "family living very well". With three teens one entering college next year and the usual expenses, I can say that from my own personal experience that a family cannot live very well on 59k/yr. Do "okay" but not "very well".

RE: what do you remember about 2011

2011:Realized that after selling the fiver in 2009 to downsize, that the money is mostly gone and we'll never afford another. That after 20 years of working I will have to get to 45 years before even thinking of retirement. I will soon be my parents primary caregiver due to age and health. But, I guess I'm still mostly healthy.

RE: Our job growth here leads the whole USA

I'm glad to hear things are so good. I think most of the west side of the state is doing better, because the farther from Detroit the better. Face it, Mich has been in a "one state recession" for ten years, that the rest of the US didn't feel. Hear in the "Saginaw Valley" it aint so rosy.

RE: Disney World in Apr. or June?

Not an expert, but we went to Majic Kingdom in June 3 yrs ago and several key attractions were closed for maintenance since the summer months are sort of the "off" season. Not to mention the death march heat!

RE: Yellowstone

Our first time visit was June 09. Here's what this newbie learned: We stayed at Grizzly, west YS. Pricey? I guess but for a once in a lifetime trip I wasn't scimping on 5 or 10 bucks a night and it is spotless, but be ready for RV envy. There were a lot of Rockstar sized rigs. I have daughters and I needed hookups, I can't make 40-50 gals hot water!:) Location? I don't see the fuss. It ALL driving. If you're in the north you'll drive south. In the west you'll drive east and so on. To me, it all equalled out. Reservations!! I saw dozens turned away daily from Grizzly. Timing? We went in early/mid June when school got out. The crowd size DOUBLED exponentially every day. The trade off was the weather was a gamble, (we lucked out). PACK A LUNCH. Every day we filled our cooler and headed out usually not getting back til dusk and if you want to bash, the concessions are overpriced and not that good. Nothing beats a picnic in YSP! Length of time? Most here will say you need weeks and weeks and weeks. That is truly up you. Time and money was my factor but we enjoyed it greatly and can't wait to go again.

RE: Would you leave RV.NET if you had no RV?

Sold our fiver in July '10 due to money and family- time constraints. Thought we'ed get something smaller for a few weekend uses but can't really afford it. I still lurk here on ATC, food, and campground forums just for fun, but not real often. I miss rving!

Trying to find a specific old movie, WW1 love story

I am trying to find a movie I saw I think on PBS about 25 years ago. It was one of those films they show on their classic night showcase type thing. It was about a WW1 flyer shot down behind enemy lines. He is befriended by a farmgirl but they can't understand eachother. I thought he was German and she Dutch? Anyhow, he calls he "blue eyes" in his language throughout the movie. It was a very old "talkie" movie probably from the 30's. I though it was called something like "Sunset Song" and maybe based on a book. Anyone know? Or is there some sort of search for this type of thing.

RE: Saran Wrap in the Oven?

No, No, No. As a worker that worked in the factory that made Saran do not put it in the oven! It will melt. They did try a similar product with "Baker's Mate" but it was a flop. So, use your time tested foil.

RE: Trash can dinner

In the 80's I was at a picnic that did this "hobo" dinner. He used a stainless steel beer 1/2 barrell keg with the end cut off and four loops welded on so it could hang above a fire. It was the older "barrell looking" keg not the style with plastic handles on one end. He cautioned to never use an aluminum keg.
