RE: truck tag

In Missouri, the thing that gripes me is I have to tag the truck for a pound value over the gross combined of the truck and trailer. But then I also have to tag the trailer. That's kind of like a "tax on a tax".
Here, the breakover points for light trucks are 6K lbs, 12K lbs, 18K lbs....and then something above that too....can't remember....I think it's like 22.5K
We have to tag the Tt, but it's a generic trailer tag. $11.00

RE: Ok so looking at 2 TTs

Really think it will be 20%? Reason I say that. As it sits, it is only 12%. I would have to load the front really heavy to get it to 20%. Don't know what I could load in front of the axles to get it to go 8% more. ? We really don't carry all that much stuff. My 6600lb (1100lb of stuff) estimate is really high for us. According to the scales. We only added 575lbs to the dry weight of the TT we now have.
I'm thinkin, I might be able to get it to 14%, as all that is in front of the axles is the bedroom, with not a lot of storage. Which still might be too much for the reciever. I'll have to look. It may only be rated to 950lbs. Seems I remember seeing 950lbs stamped on it., as that is 10% of the max towing capacity for a max tow 150 of that year. So it may not go as high as the 1275 you mentioned.
Also According to what I have read, and it may be wrong. The wide stance axles contribute to a lighter tongue weight, and but more stable towing. It's possible that the other more lighter TT will have a higher tongue weight than the more heavier one, as it just has regular axles.
might be wise to actually weigh the tongue before buying.

Ok so looking at 2 TTs

First. TV has a tow cap of 8000lbs configured as it is, With only minor changes, (wheels, and gear). It goes to 9500.
So here's where we are. One TT has a Yellow sticker weight of 4800lbs. So, loaded ready to camp, We are looking at around 59 to 6000 lbs, Or a couple hundred lb less than I'm towing now.(5000lb dry) Which BTW, the TV does not break a sweat doing.
The other TT come in at Yellow sticker of 5500. Which means, It will come in around 65 to 6600lb loaded ready to camp. Actually less, as much of the stuff we take out of the current TT won't go back into the new TT, as much of it we don't use, so no reason to carry it around.
What the TV carries. DW, Me, and 2 bikes, or a couple nights firewood. Never both at the same time.
So I'm relly thinkin. Is 5 or 600lbs really gonna make that much difference?
BTW. The heavier one has the Stable trac, wide stance axles.

RE: Expedition owners - questions on 2009 expy

They come with P series tires, Because that is all that is needed to carry the GVWR of the Expe. Would be foolish of Ford to put higher rated than necessary on any vehicle. After all the P tires are rated for 2271 lbs each, or 9000lbs +combined. Way more than the Expe will ever weigh. The tires only have to carry the Expe, not the trailer.

RE: Expedition owners - questions on 2009 expy

Hi all,
Looking at a 2009 expy Eddie Bauer.
Question I have is on Towing package for this vehicle. Specifially, how can you tell on this one if it had the heavy towing option?
Has a small ( 2.5" x 10" or so) additonal cooler in front of Rad?? Truck has P rated tires, but they are replacements. Did OEM on this come with LT tires.
Rear Axle is 3.55, did tow package come with 3.73?
Any other clues.
AS WELL, any experience on this for a tow vehicle with 3.55 ratio? Towing a 23' TT dry 4200, loaded at around 5500 lb usually.
Thanks
A real clue is the reciever, If it has one, and a 7 pin, beside the 4 pin, It has the towing package. In addition to the small rad, there should be another for the powersterring as well.
As for the Rear gear. It really does not matter. they will put the tow package on any one of them.

In NC. Private Camping Trailers are exempt from DOT weight laws. So I just buy a normal truck tag.

RE: North Carolina July vacation

From Boone to Ashville? There are many.. Just a few miniutes from Downtown Boone, is Honey Bear, very nice, Also between Burnsville, and Spruce Pines is Toe River, a County park. Has a pool, and the Toe River runs nearly all the way around it. Just down 80 from there is Carolina Hemlock, a Forestry CG again on the river, but with no hookups, and not farther on the same road, is Black Mountain CG, again a primitive CG.
Then closer to Ashville ther is Catawba Falls near Old Fort. There is also Sky Island, and Campfire Logdings.

RE: Opinions on UnderWeight Hitch Setup from dealer

IF your 150 did not have a hitch on it from the factory, It does NOT have the HD towing package. I'm betting without the towing package, it does not have 11,000lb towing cap. Unless you also added the complete factory towing package. With out the towing package. You are only good to 5000 lbs or so.
Just adding a hitch, does not add the tow package. It will need a larger radiator, Trany cooler, powersteering coole, larger alternator and of course, a brake controler. So yopu still got work to do.

RE: Teenager At Home and RVing

No way. Compromise. Tell her to get in the truck, and hush. It works, Did for us. And now, The TT can't leave the yard with out her, and her family.
We are parents first, and friends later. Many get that backwards. Be a parent, and you will always be friends.
BTW. Do not cancel your camping plans because she does not want to go. She will get over it. Remember. It's your vacation now. She can have her's when she grows up. Bet it will still be in the camper with you.. DD din't want to go with us as a 15 year old. Now the TT can't leave the yard with out her, and her family.

RE: I love camping

For me. It's the miniute after getting setup, look around, and realize. The Cell phone won't work. The TV won't pick up, and nothin is going to beep at me.
I go camping to get away form all the stuff that I have to deal with at home. Once you get out of cell, and TV signal. GOOD TO GO.

RE: Asheville, NC -- New Camping World

Give a look to Bumgarner's Camping, in Hudson NC as well, Not that far from Marion. Great people. Stand behind what they sell.
They will let you walk the lot, and browse at your leisure, and will be more than happy to talk with you, and help you find what you want, If you didn't see it on the lot.
Good People.

RE: Camping with toddlers

We started camping when the baby was potty training, We had a
pup, no bathroom. DO NOT setup where she can see the bath house.
Any way. Our kids had "camping" toys that stayed in the pup. The boy would pull out his toy cars, and the girl would get her tea set, and before the pup was up. Superhighways wouls have appeared all over the campsite, and there would be refreshments at the picnic table, but in tiny little cups.
Now the Grand babies go along. started when they were 2 months old. how do we entertain them? We don't. We let them develope their imaginations, Just like we did with our's. They love to dig in the sand, gather sticks, try to make things wiith the dirt / sand molds. We spend no time in the camper. When your awake, your outside. It just the way it is.
They are now 6, and 4. Their big thrill now, is to ride in the TV, and help "carry" the TT. They LOVE camping. Hotel rooms are foreign to them.

RE: North Carolina Camping

Take a look at Mountain Stream RV Park. Nice and quiet, beautifully landscaped and on the stream. It is in Marion, NC
It's a nice little park, but the owners are a bit much. A lot of rules, which they will elcture you about when you check in. Also, they will walk around with the rules in their hand. And if that is not enough, check out the rules posted on the bulleting board in the middle of the park. That is, if you lost your copy of the rules they give you at check in. Also, if you have dogs, follow the signs and do not let them use the bathroom on the grass, unless they are in the fenced in dog park. They must go on the gravel otherwise. And if you have kids, there is nothing for them to do there. Well except the creek. And then make sure they don't move any rocks.
We won't return back....well maybe when we get hold and crotchety and don't have kids with us...lol
We walked Mountain Stream. We didn't care for it for several reasons. One, It's not up the Mountain but at the bottom. ( hot down there). 2. Had very tiny sites. 3 kind of pricey for where it is. 3 fire rings were only a few feet from the next camper over, and then there is that grass thing.

RE: North Carolina Camping

www.rv-clubs.us/northcarolina_rv_campgrounds.html
Go there. Lots of CGs. Several of our favorites are Raccoone Holler in Glendale springs. Yes it's up the mountain not that far from Charlotte.
Orchard Lake near Saludia. Again up the hill.
also the primitive CG on the Blue ridge Parkway. they are great, but have no hookups, Do have dumping stations, and fresh water. Also for Julian Price, Just out of Blowing Rock. Air Conditioning is never needed, as it is not at Linville Falls, also on the BRP.
Honey Bear just out of Boone is great as well. Full hook up there.
It seems there is a CG on every corner in the Blue Ridge Mountains

RE: Best campgrounds for popup in Smokies

Asheville SC?? Cherokee SC?? You sure your in the right state? There is a Cherokee county in SC, but it ain't nowhere near the mountains.
If however you mean NC. I would suggest Happy holiday in Cherokee NC. It is on the reservation, not far from the village. You should get reservations though.

RE: What do you do?

Honestly, I will move over if possible, But, For me. It depends alot on the other driver. IF he hits the bottom of the ramp at interstate speed. I'll slow, and let him in. However, IF he hits the bottom of the ramp at say 45 to 50. I won't slow down, and he will just have to wait till I go by.
So many people don't know, to merge, you have to be going at the same speed as traffic, not 15 to 30 MPH slower

RE: What do you do?

When traveling on an interstate and you are approaching an on ramp with a line of traffic, what do you do?? Yesterday, returning from a wonderful weekend, it was ruined by an idiot driver. I was approaching a on ramp, traffic was real heavy, I couldn't get into the left lane. I was doing 5 miles under the speed limit and had 4 car lengths in front of me. That didn't last long because as cars passed they cut in front of me. I got to the onramp and assuming they would have to stop because they have to yeild, boy was I wrong. They just kept coming and cut me off to the point I had to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting a family of four. What do you do? Always get into the passing lane (if possible)or stay in the driving lane????
Don't you mean before they hit you? Maybe they wanted to buy you a new truck, and trailer.

RE: I KID YOU NOT.... (TEENAGE BOYS)

Started down the road with four teenage boys (13-15) headed to Oklahoma state park Burns Run West. Popped a movie the dvd player and "I KID YOU NOT" about ten minutes or so into the movie I was asked to turn it off! I turned it off and there was SILENCE in the motor home the entire hour and ten minute ride. There was the occassional "wow" but silence. It was getting late so I stopped to get the boys something quick to eat. This way they would not have been so hungry once we arrived and set up. THEY ASKED IF THEY CAN EAT IN THE MOTOR HOME WHILE RIDING! And again, there was silence! Two of the boys were brothers and neither had ever gone camping before. I over heard one of them say to the other, "....the next time we come I gonna bring mommy's nice camera...." Who said they would be coming again?! ;) The boys set up two tents late Friday evening. I didn't hear a peep out of them until late Sunday. And I KID YOU NOT....these teenage boys said they want to go every weekend and they are gonna tell the other boys (in the neighborhood). Once we had gotten back home I saw one of the boys sitting in his backyard just daydreaming. These are the same boys I've seen spend hours playing video games!
Just goes to show. Camping, Is all the entertainment they need, No fancy amenity filled CG, Just camping
