RE: Haulling 4 kayaks on top of suburban. Help!

Thanks Jack for your comments. I'll take your advise for sure. I'm looking at all recreational Kayaks that I think will be in the 8-11 feet, so it sounds like I should not have any problems provided I think about how each one is connected to the vehicle. Looking forward to Yellowstone and the Tetons in July.... Brad H.

RE: Haulling 4 kayaks on top of suburban. Help!

These are going to be on their side to maximize the width available on top of the suburban. So yes, they will be on the factory rack utilizing a bar called a yukima big stick. Ti sounds like it will work assuming I have adequate tie downs, with no bungee type cords. I've thought about the trailer, but yellostone is so picky anymore it would appear to cause more problems.. I've pulled a 21 foot tt with a single jet ski all over the rockies and it did well. Had to add sway bars but otherwise no problems.. Thanks for the comments.

Haulling 4 kayaks on top of suburban. Help!

Has anyone Done this? Yakima big stack says no problem, but what about the cross winds in Kansas. We will be heading to Yellostone for a couple of weeks and I have no concerns about the weight since everything is within spec. All kayaks will be recreational at about 9 feet long. But the wind. I guess this would slow me down unless I want them to blow off. Anyone tried this? I might try and store the kayaks inside the camper until we arrive and then put them on top. Am I crazy....:W Well, what do u think?? The suburban is a 3/4 ton 8.1 towing a 23 foot Outback tt.

RE: Towing with a minivan

I've seen a Honda pull this size into Branson once a year. Avoid the Rockies and have a good one.

RE: AAAHHH, Yellowstone!

While going from yellostone lake to the north east entrance to view wolfs one morning before sunrise, the yellostone river had fog above it making for a sight that I can never forget.

RE: What do you think of Open Range?

Do your homework. My reading online would indicate they had problems with slides, but I believe this issue has been resolved. Check for a Open Road forum. Good luck.

RE: 3/4 ton Chev Suburban Tire Blow Out!!!

Response / Update to some questions ( All good by the way ) 1) I spoke to a tire dealer(Discount Tires, not Sam's where the tires were purchased ) about traveling on the dirt road with rock outcrops as a possible contributor to the belt failure. I tried to explain that some rock sections did exist and I just went slow while observing a number of other vehicles flying over these sections. He said his brother drives the county roads in and around Denver and he could not believe that to be the source. 2) This is the second set of BF Goodrich TA' Commercials because I felt the prices were fair and I could get service at Sam's around the country. These tires are E rating 12 ply with a max pressure of 80 psi. I follow the door jam which says 80 psi rear and 55 psi front. I sometimes pull the rear down if I am not towing. I believe the DOT shows they were made in 2009. 3) This is a tow truck.. It sits for 50% of the year inside a garage that rarely freezes. I put about 10,000 miles per year on the truck. Family trips with and without the 2005 23 foot Outback travel trailer. It may sit a few months at a time, but keep in mind, so did my last set of these exact tires. 4) I've not confirmed it as of yet ( Waiting on the new tires to arrive ) but I can almost swear 100% that at least one front tire has also slipped a belt. That is 50% tire failure pulling a U-haul trailer. No way. Thanks again for everyone's input and comments. The only thing different in my driving habit was taking my Suburban down a dirt road that was very rough, Otherwise, this truck had never seen the dirt of any sort. Highway miles mostly. By the way, my new trailer tires from discount tire did just fine. Brad

3/4 ton Chev Suburban Tire Blow Out!!!

OK, After towing something(Boats, rv's, etc.) since 1980 it finally happened. While towing a U haul trailer of all things, my 2004 suburban blew out a tire going about 60 mph. A little history: 1) We just returned from a 2K mile trip to Colorado 2) Drove the unit with TT about 6 miles of rocky bumpy dirt road to get back to Rampart Reservoir during this 2k trip 3) No problems noted with the tires throughout the trip Well, we went to make the trip from OKC to Springfield 2 weeks later and the truck tires were screaming with what felt like an out of balance situation. I immediately blamed the U-haul trailer. I was WRONG!! It was the Suburban's 4 BF Goodrich TA Commercial Tires. By the way, they tried to tell me for over an hour to pull over. I did not do it and one finally went BOOM!! Just outside of Joplin, MO. A second one is about to go also. Everyone is safe. The truck has about 1.5K in damage. Go figure. Looking at some new Michelins all around. This is the first major tire failure I've ever experienced in 49 years of life. The tires were about half worn and I'd never expected the dirt road to loosen the belts this much. Good luck and don't ignore your truck like I did. Learn from my mistake and save some body damage to what was my perfect little truck. Not even a door ding. Safe travels Brad
