RE: Proposed USDA rule change internet puppy sales

I am intimately aware of the costs of responsibly breeding litters having bred 3 litters of working Border Collies. You forgot the expenses required to demonstrate the sire and dam are worthy of being bred; in our case that would be 3-5 years of training. I had the feeling that you were partial to border collies. No idea where that came from, though ;). I did not forget the costs that are associated with training, showing, trials, I just lumped it in with expenses (along with vet checks, stud fees, possible c sections, gates, pads, etc.). A friend was a breeder/handler of Samoyeds, I know that she spent a lot of time and money training her dogs, and then showing them. It would be a shame if it deters those folks who work(ed) so hard to maintain and improve breeding lines by responsibly breeding for quality, temperment, skill, etc.

RE: Proposed USDA rule change internet puppy sales

Of the few people that I have known who are breeder-handlers of show dogs, they all claim that they net negative or barely break even on breeding. There is a lot of overhead involved for someone who is only breeding for a couple of litters a year. It is definitely something that they do more for the love of it, and to maintain and improve breed quality than to make a profit. The wording is gross not net. Yes, I read that and undersood it, and that is where the rule change should be amended. Thus, my point in posting what I posted. Responsible breeding of dogs, complete with proper vet care, and the cost of a quality dam and stud (or stud fee), among other expenses, is, as you probably are well aware, hardly going to rake in the dough.

RE: Newbies headed to Yellowstone

If you are not going to take a toad, there is a Budget rent a car in West Yellowstone. Yes, it will add to the overall cost, but you really do not want to try to sight-see in a motorhome, unless it is a smaller class B or C. You will find that there are times that you have to navigate around obstacles (like cars that stop half off the road to look at yet another herd of bison, or bison) and parking at some of the sights is pretty tight. And if you rent a smaller car, you will definitely save a good portion of your daily rental fee in what you won't be paying for in fuel. Distances are vast, and delays are many. Sure, having it all with you might be nice when you are stopped for animal-jams or construction (there is always construction in the park). But trying to get into some of the parking lots, or sitting in line at the entrance will get old. I have to add my +1 to the advice that you not try to go to Yellowstone without reservations, unless you are prepared to "camp" without electric hook-ups (and water, WiFi, etc). Likely it is too late to find a spot in Fishing Bridge for this summer (unless you luck out on a cancellation), but the surrounding areas are also filling up fast. I will echo the advice that comes up in every Yellowstone thread that you might consider camping for a few nights in one location, then moving to another for a few nights, lather rinse repeat.

RE: Proposed USDA rule change internet puppy sales

The shelters are just running a puppy business their selves on the backs of dogs that need homes. We live on a huge ranch where a dog can run, play and work. Not like I live in a one bedroom apartment in a big city and will leave the dog in a crate all day. Just because you had an unfavorable experience with a single shelter does not make shelters, as a whole, bad. Factory animal farms, be they raising meat animals or pets, have a horrible, nasty history of abusing the animals in their care, neglecting them, having the females pop out offspring nonstop without regard for their well-being, only caring about profit. Yes, there are shelters out there that are really hoarders posing as rescues, which is an entirely different story. I, personlly would rather see people become educated on what makes a good breeder, and buy responsibly than have the governemnt intervene, but as long as there are Petlands and internet sales, clueless people will doom thousands of breeding dogs to a horrible "life".

RE: What else do I need?

We got a Certificate Of Origin with ours in Illinois as opposed to a title. Don't know about either Ohio or Indiana titling on TCs. As far as insurance, check with your company for your truck. State Farm sent us a rider for the TC. It is a tricky one, because what happens if something happens to it when it is off the truck (rare event, in our case). Most TCs have a battery port separate from living area.

RE: Mink

Also, some humane societies and wildlife rehabbers will take old fur garments to use when raising young animals or rehabbing. Rehabbers who take furs But the teddy bear idea is lovely, too.

RE: Question on .177 Co2 pellet gun

I would advise anyone to forget about trying to interpret state(s) codes and go straight to your local wildlife officer for any up to date info on getting rid of any wild or feral nuisance animals. Well, yeah, that was kind of my advice. I know that a lot of people look at varmints as "just" varmints, but one's local wildlife law enforcement sometimes take things very seriously, and some state's laws are more involved than others. The act of trapping and moving squirrels probably wont get someone in trouble, but one should know before they do such a thing what the consequences could be. Not that I have any knowledge or experience with doing anything of the sort, first-hand. Or anything like that.

RE: The Whazoo's trip of many colors...Or...Brokefoot Mountain

It's a shame that you guys don't get out more, and that when you do get out, that you don't go to interesting places. :p Really though, thanks for sharing. The pictures are lovely, and your stories and embellishments make them come to life.

RE: Question on .177 Co2 pellet gun

I have a .177 cal Gammo air rifle that shoots a 10.5 grain match grade lead pellet at 1400 FPS. And yes with a scope its deadly on squirrels/ferrel cats and other pests. I would suggest a steel live box trap like the Havahart. I have a old one that opens both ends and I believe is 13" x 13" x 30". I trap red squirrels and move them across my 40 acre hay meadow to the backside of my place. I bait with black oil sunflower seeds. Trap them and enjoy stewed squirrel or take them to a area and release them unseen. I trap and remove coons with the Havahart box trap. Its also effective at controlling feral cats/skunks and armadillos although a big dillo can bend the trap and escape. Before you trap and eat or trap and release any wild animal, I would check your state's hunting regulations. We, er, someone we knew was trapping the overpopulated tree rodents in our, er, their yard many years ago and then taking the trapped critters over to the abandoned mink farm to let go. It was then discovered that, in Illinois, trapping (or taking) a wild animal without a permit or license was punishable by a fine of up to $400.00 per incident, and then relocating and/or releasing a wild animal was also punishable by the same. Trapping (or taking) an animal out of season without a hunting license is also a fine of up to $1000.00. Illinois hunting regs, pages 10 and 28

RE: Camper on lifted truck

There are two types of lifts, spacer lift and suspension lift. In any case, a spacer lift is total garbage, but they are quicker and much cheaper than doing an actual suspension lift, so people do them. I wouldn't put even a pop up TC on a 350 that has a spacer lift. Even with a suspension lift and all the proper modifications, especially one over a couple of inches, I have to agree that your COG would be skewed very high, and there would be stability issues with any TC, but any hard side would be particularly questionable. Looks cool, drives like a concrete mixer. Thanks, but no.

RE: New Maryland state appeals court ruling on Pit Bulls

There are a whole load of people out there who have no idea what a pit bull is, and therefore, pitbulls get pegged for a lot of damage. This has probably been posted before, but as an example, find the pitbull. Statistics on dog bites still show that the #1 common factor among dogs that bite humans is that the dog is an INTACT (un-neutered) male dog. Quite often, these dogs are going after another high ranking commom denominator, unspayed female dogs in heat. Chained dogs also rank very high on the list. When you think about the kind of people who own pitbulls (or dogs that people think are pitbulls), they are likely to be chained (with heavy, heavy chains to strengthen their necks and shoulders), and intact. These dogs are also likely to be poorly socialized, and bred specifically for aggression, which is something that no responsible breeder would ever allow an aggressive dog to breed. Many dog bite and dog attack victims are children, who unintentionally do the very things which can trigger a dog's prey drive, they are small and they make quick movements, and high pitched sounds, and they often try to flee, further triggering the dog. Dogs that are in pain, dogs that are afraid, or are senile, or provoked can attack. Personally, I have known a few bull terriers and AmStaffs, and every one has been well behaved, social, and friendly. Some statistics from the Humane Society. Breed specific legislation is not the answer, and I don't agree that it is a good place to even start. I can't imagine having to give up a friendly, well trained dog because it is a specific breed.

RE: Horse Color

My piebald paint boy would fade by the middle of the summer. When he would shed out from his winter coat, he was breathtaking, jet black and white as snow white. I do miss that boy. For black horses, I had been told from several different sources to feed oiler sunflower seeds, shell and all, with their grain. I don't know that I noticed any difference, but he loved them. Of course, that horse (was a horse) loved to eat just about anything. His dream life is what your horses have, just running in a pasture (or, standing still) and looking pretty.

RE: Stopping dog from playing keep a way

Just about the worst thing to do when a dog is running away is to chase them. If you can get their attention, or get them to look at you, run away from them. Most will chase you as part of "the game". As to another point, I, personally, would not shoot a dog, or any other animal that I did not mean to kill, with even the lightest of loads, or a pellet gun or BBs.

RE: How much can I tow with this?

Those are humans in the vehicles behind and in the other lanes. Recycle this home brew thing and get a proper hitch. Yep. Exactly what I was thinking. A loose 1800 lb boat on a trailer is bound to ruin more than someone else's day. Junk that junk and do it right. After all, if you have to ask the question, that shows me that you doubt the integrity of that thing.

RE: Planning a June trip to Yellowstone

If you are in the Yellowstone area a while, a side trip of a day or two to Hyalite Canyon near Bozeman can be a respite from all of the crowds at Yellowstone. There is the resevoir, if you boat or fish, and a campground (no utilities, but nice sites), and hiking, etc. We did not have time to get down to the Tetons, and I regret that. I can't tell you firsthand how spectacular they are, but others have told me that we missed a lot. I second the Beartooth Highway, but grades are steep, it is very winding, and I was surprised to see how many completely insane (;)) mountain bikers were riding. There are some pretty acute hairpin turns, so keep that in mind.

Horrible. The pictures are just awful. Bless all the volunteers, and foster homes. Poor breeding dogs finally have a chance at a decent life now, at least.

RE: TC on Seasonal / Permanent Site - Anyone done this?

I've considered it, and if it gives you the opportunity to take more weekends with it, and your GF, I say do it. There is a place in Wisconsin that is by an off road (ATV, dirt bike, etc) trail that has seasonal site rentals. But then, my husband likes to use the TC as a man cave in the driveway, so we haven't done it. We've had the TC off of the truck, and had people on top of the tc, it's rock solid, considering the COG is so low and fairly far back. i don't think that you need to, but if you had a set of braces to make you feel better, why not?
