RE: Considering a MH

I'd strongly recommend you look for one with at least a 228" wheelbase for better ride & tracking.
Yup, that wheelbase on a 32' MH will keep the tail wag down.

Yup, "huge" increase in gasoline prices up here - $3.39 to $3.49. Looks like they are trying to reach $4.00 before Memorial Day. :E

RE: Motor Shield Question

My MY2000 Vacationer doesn't have that shield setup with the V10, IIRC. BTW, a 454 is a Chevy engine. A 460 is the earlier Ford engine.

RE: Does anyone have any snow yet?

We are now over 40" below normal for snow fall. Last Sunday morning it was 1°F with a wind chill of -10°F. The rest of the week the daily daytime temp has been in the mid 30's - no snow, just fog here and there. We have maybe 2" of snow covering our septic. The month of February normally gets about 10" of snow. But so far it looks pretty dry for the foreseeable future.
They are warning about fires as the dry grasses are exposed since there is little or no snow on the ground. Could be a bad spring fire season. Luckily we burned some brush earlier before the fire warnings.
The bar owners/motel-hotel managers are whining about reduced income due to the lack of snow on this side of the lake. The snowmobilers are whining about the lack of snow. The south shore of Lake Superior has gotten a few feet of lake effect snow so they're happy over there....

RE: Was not aware that RV factory workers paid piecemeal v. hourly

Quality generally has a direct relationship to both work ethic and management. Many of us "old-timers" feel workers work ethic is not what it was in earlier generations. But.... along with that opinion, there are a lot of managers who are not worth their salt.

RE: WILL COST OF FUEL DESTROY MOTOR HOME TRAVEL

3.39, wow I just filled up yesterday for 3.59 here in Missouri, where was it 3.39?
Answer NO Never give up, never give in, Never Never Never, kudos to Sir Winston Churchill
Happy Trails
Jim
Up at the end of I-35 the prices are $3.35 to $3.39. And it will be in the mid-30's for high temperatures. We might see the sun today and hardly any snow on the ground.
We'll be planning a few trips for the summer.

RE: WILL COST OF FUEL DESTROY MOTOR HOME TRAVEL

Okay....the doom and gloom people have started up again in this post and another.....I'm going to ruin your predictions.. Fuel Prices Falling
So, how come the gasoline prices have now gone up 6¢ a gallon this past week? Plus I notice this morning some stations have raised their prices another 4¢ a gallon to $3.39. That is a total of 10¢ a gallon this past week. So much for the cost going down.......:R

RE: Confused Daffodils in Upstate NY

Not quite warm for flowers here yet. It only got up to 39°F today. What little snow we have is melting down. Currently we're short about 40" of snow. Could be a bad spring fire season coming up. Could be a lot of reservoirs showing a lot of shore line this summer.

RE: MONTANA TRUCK CAMPER RALLY JUNE 21ST - 24TH 2012

Historically the Going-To-The-Sun highway has opened around June 15th. Last year, IIRC, it opened in July as it was a good snow year. In 2008 we visited and did a trip part way up the Garden Wall. Took some pictures across the valley at all the water falls. It seems I have duplicates of the above pictures except for the upper St. Mary's Lake.
I can remember, as a teenager, going over the pass and Garden Wall with snow drifts much higher than the car laughing at all the "flatlanders." If you need a car wash take the east to west trip on the Garden Wall.
You'all have a great time in the Glacier area. It can be a little nippy in early June. But the creeks should be running pretty good. The Camas Road is also a good trip. There is a primitive campground at Bowman Lake that a TC can use. When we visited it looked like no one had camped for a while. Fish for trout, I believe that no fishing license is required. Hungry Horse Lake has many Forest Service campgrounds around the lake. I could babble on, but.....:B

RE: Florida I-75 multi vehicle crash today

Several years ago we were driving up I-35 to Duluth. Fog had formed in some low areas. I had my headlights on (it was daylight) for driving through the fog banks. Instead of going 70+ mph into the fog, I slowed down to 55 mph. Visibility was only about 50' in the fog. Several cars went blasting by in the left lane going at least 70mph. Darned scary!:E
Too many drivers seem to be zoned out. Notice the lack of looking down the road to avoid stuff on the road or the fact that it snowing/raining heavily for reduced visibility, etc., etc.. JM2¢W
Most headlights on the low beam are useless at 70mph at night. On low beam the headlights are barely adequate at 55 mph at night, IMHO.

RE: RV Show today....Where is the creativity and innovation?

Another reason why we have chosen to stay with our 12 year old motor home. It has the floor plan we like, everything works (knock on wood), and is the right length for getting into small camping sites.

RE: I-75 & US-441 closed in Florida

Seems like these kinds of accidents are occurring more often. Maybe common sense is lacking? We have a similar problem up here with people driving in "blinding" snow storms without any headlights/tail lights turned on. Probably think their "daylight lights" are doing the job.

RE: Personal question re retirement

Retire before a health "gotcha" gets you (one got me :-( ). I retired at 63. We were able to full time for two years. Then we planted ourselves not too far from the 5 grandkids. As others have said, lose the weight as it will be a benefit over the years and enjoy your retirement.

RE: How did it start? (update)

Started tent camping with the Boy Scouts in north central Montana. After the family moved to Minnesota in 1953 didn't camp for a few years. After getting Married in 1961 (50th anniversary last Sept.) we did some tent camping until 1973. That year we bought my brother's 8 sleeper Starcraft popup. We took off for Yellowstone and Glacier NP's. Darn, it got cold without a heater. Replaced the water tank, installed a heater and replaced all the canvas. Then added a 12v converter, 12v deep cycle battery, and some 12v lighting.
In 1979 we bought a new 1978 Starcraft. Added a 2nd 20# propane bottle. Found a 12v/propane refrigerator that fit into the same space as the cooler. Installed a 12v fan to move the air past the back of the fridge. Installed a "splitter" so the camper battery would get charged while we traveled between stops. Did trips to Washington DC, Canada, Florida, Oregon and Washington.
1991 was the year our summer trip to Oregon was rain soaked for 1.5 weeks. Got tired of putting up/taking down wet canvas without soaking the bedding. A camping friend was selling his HR 27' Class C with tag axle and asked us if we were interested. Over the next 8+ years we put over 35,000 miles on this RV. In 1999, at an HR International Rally we bought a MY2000 32' Class A Vacationer (no slides). We still have this RV and have put over 78,000 miles on it. We even full timed for almost 2 years until the DW decided she wanted to be near the grand kids (there are now 5). So we go camping with our HRRVC friends and at the RV pad we had built at the kids lake cabin (45 miles north of the stick & bricks). Our long trips have been somewhat curtailed due to high gas prices and medical problems.
We still have fun camping and will continue to do it until it becomes a problem. We have many fond memories of camping over the years.

RE: Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

Wow, I can't believe it! Gas prices are remaining "stable" at $3.29 at most stations. Diesel prices vary from $3.79 to $3.99. Of course, if the Iranians go nuts, all bets are off.

RE: should blk & grey tanks be full for 4-corner weigh-in?

When the factory required us to weigh ours, they wanted full fuel and propane. Fresh water/black/gray tanks were empty. But when we travel we usually have a full fresh water tank and empty black/gray tanks. The reason for the fresh water is that in too many places the water just doesn't taste like our well water.

RE: Whazoo's trip to the Mountains of the Moon with Ocotillians

Hi SRT, Well since I'm back on the first page of course I like to respond. It's just when I see the post heading for the back page I figure folks have had enough of me. I know I usually have. The desert is Called Anza Borrego in Southern California. It's a playground of a desert with something for everyone.
Rick, too bad I missed it but did check out some on the web. They are very cool. So many different toys out there for a guy to want.
GoinThisWay, You're right, it does look like a hula skirt doesn't it. I guess it was a female palm tree. Thank you very much, see you again when you post another trip.
Thanks, Whazoo. Guess I'll crank up Google Earth and visit the Anza Borrego....:B. Your trip reports are great!!
