RE: Virginia RV taxes

so glad we escaped from N.VA. Taxes plus the daily beat down to and from Woodbridge & the Pentagon.:(
I understand the beatdown...I live in Woodbridge and work in Rosslyn. Fortunately I have a Metro stop right by where I work. Moving to Stafford, and then I guess it will be VRE and Metro. It's a vicious cycle, I think. Everything up here costs more, so people have to make more. That increases operating costs, so businesses charge more, thereby increasing the cost of living....etc.

RE: Virginia RV taxes

Here are a couple of sites that give you good info on state taxes. Robbie

Well, I can't even think about retiring yet. In fact, I'll probably work til I die. It might be useful to someone else though.

RE: Virginia RV taxes

vjstangelo - it's still personal property and would get hit for the tax. It might qualify for the state-funded subsidy if it's not too heavy. If it is not exempted, the tax would be based on the tax value.
I guess my next step will be to contact the tax office in Stafford to find out how they handle motorhomes. I may have to store it in PW county since they exempt them.

RE: Virginia RV taxes

I have an RV registered in VA. Each county determines treatment of RV for property. In Arlington where I live the rate would be 5% as the state law that gives a subsidy for property taxes does not provide for any reduction to RVs.
Not sure what Stafford does but Prince William, just up I-95 does not charge any personal property tax on RVs. There is a parking lot (Holly Hills Marine) that offers spaces starting at $67/month located at Exit 158 (Woodbridge). They offer a dump station too so I have found this a pretty convenient way to keep my RV at a lower cost.
I'll be living just off US 1 between exits 243 and 240, so this is an option I will look into if Stafford County wants too much to park it at my house.

RE: Virginia RV taxes

The MH is currently stored at Ft. Belvoir, so it hasn't been an issue. However, since I am no longer on active duty, I am going to have to move it somewhere else. I am moving to a location where I hope to have it on property with me. Changing my registration address to my daughter in Orlando may be my best bet.

RE: Virginia RV taxes

Roy, that's what I understand. The % varies from county to county, and there is a state "subsidy" to offset the cost on vehicles. RV's don't get that, so unless they are exempted for some other reason, it would be on the full value. Prince William County is 3.7%, others are lower, some are higher. That's $3700 on a $100,000 MH.
I have two children living in Orlando, and own property in the panhandle (just an empty piece of land), so I think perhaps I should keep it registered in FL.
Burp - the property taxes on houses in MD around DC are ridiculous. $6000 more in the Laurel area than Stafford on comparable houses.

RE: Virginia RV taxes

Gas and fuel taxes low in Virginia compared to where? DC and MD, maybe. Gas is no higher in Central Florida than where I live now, and closer to DC it is noticeably higher. And...no more fuel than it uses sitting stationary, I would rather more taxes on the fuel - and most of the miles I would drive it would not be in Virginia, anyway.

Virginia RV taxes

Hello all - I have been "absent" for quite some time. Life somehow seems to get in the way of fun. Anyway, I have moved from Florida to Virginia. I hated to do it, but I went where the work was. I was wondering if anyone on this board has registered a motorhome in Virginia, and if so, are the county-charged "personal property taxes" applicable to MH's, and if so, is it the full amount? I can't imagine having to pay 2 or 3 percent of the value of my MH in taxes each year. That would increase my costs probably $150-$300 per month. It already pains me making a huge payment each month on something that has ended up sitting most of the time.
