RE: Mouse in a travel trailer

Make sure all the areas that water pipes, electric, etc are caulked. When we first brought ours home, there was no caulking, and it was a super highway for mice. DH caulked...I think that is what he used, and the mice had to detour to another location.

RE: Personal Question $$$

I'm not sure how this information could be valuable to anyone. We are all at different financial places in our lives. What is true for DH & I is quite different from our kids who are fairly new in their careers, marriages, parenthood, and all those expenses. Too many variables for this information to be of any use to anyone...I think.

RE: TOTAL NEWBIES, looking for assistance intelligently

So sorry you had such a bad experience. I am somewhat surprised. Often people stop when we are sitting outside our RV or someone talks to us when we are walking around the campground. We have a 5th wheel, and often people who are thinking about getting a 5th wheel stop to ask questions. We even met a couple who have become very close friends camping...and they are a lot younger than we are. We have never had an A, but if you think about some specific questions and either ask those here, or do a search cause so many questions have been asked you might find answers.

RE: Sold on cast iron cooking

Johnworth was right about the trick is to stop DW from scrubbing off the seasoning. Years ago DH had a cast iron skillet that I scrubbed every time he used it. He finally threw it away. About 5 years ago he got another and the deal is...I never touch it. He uses it almost every day.

RE: TOTAL NEWBIES, looking for assistance intelligently

While you are compiling your questions, just a couple comments. DH has towed for years, and the first time each year we go out, he is really nervous for awhile, you are not alone about your nervousness. I remember the first time we went into a campground, we had no idea what we were doing, but there are always friendly people around. DH is very particular about backing into the site, and if it not just "right" we often have neighbors watching him pull forward, back, and watch both of us laugh. That is part of the fun. Remember that things will go wrong, and take along your sense of humor. Take in the beauty of the outdoors, the smell of barbeque, and the stars at night and you will be smiling like all of us. Enjoy!

RE: Cook Forest, Pennsylvania

We like Cooks Forest State Park. There is also Kalyumet Campground that is very nice. We love to go in the fall, great hiking, nice shops, some like to canoe.

RE: Kitchen must haves

DH says coffee pot and plastic wine glasses! The things we use the most: plastic flower pot that holds all "utensils" right behind the sink that easily fits under the sink when traveling, good knives, plastic cutting boards, plastic dinnerware(what use to be called melmac), flatwear. We also bought the Cuissanart pots and pans made for traveling with removable handles. We both like those. We love having an oven. Our first night of camping is usually a pizza night. We bring frozen pizza so we don't have to light a grill, etc. when we arrive at a site late.

RE: Crockpot Use In Towed Not Being Towed?

We use a 110 AC inverter. Ours is not rated as high as you can get, and we can only run our crockpot on low, but it works fine. To run it on high, DH says you need about 1000 watt inverter, and that might cause fuse problems.

RE: Bear Spray

Last time we hiked the high country of Yellowstone, we came upon an elk carcass about 50 yards off the trail. We came back about 30-45 minutes later and the elk carcass was on the trail. We did not see a bear, but would not hike Yellowstone without bear spray, and making noise as we hike.

RE: Best Route to Custer State Park (or is there one??)

I think we went the way Jim described. The wildlife loop use to be great. Donkeys walked right up and put their heads in your window. You won't regret this trip.

RE: Bud ran away

So glad Bud is back home! Years ago DH's neice and kids stayed a few days at our house. They left while we were at work, leaving the doors wide opened. (Hard to imagine) We came home to no Maggie. We searched the entire night and were sitting at the kitchen table trying to decide how to tell the kids that we didn't find her when we heard her scratching at the door. She came in smelling horribly, and ran in and jumped on our son's bed. We always called it Maggie's prom night.

Retiring!

After 37 years in Education (17 years elementary teacher 20 years elementary principal) I am retiring in 2 months. We have an amazing family and DH and I plan many camping trips, and great times with our family. This forum is specifically for camping, but I have to ask...have any of you who have retired faced overwhelming sadness at the prospect? This retirement was my decision. I have been asked to stay by many, but I jokingly say, I made the decision, and I can't be the Brett Favre of education. Am I alone in this feeling? Completely crazy?

RE: Who is still camping?

We have reservations at several Ohio State Parks throughout the spring and summer, so we are still going. We also have one vacation planned to the East Coast. We all have different financial obligations, so my guess is that this question's answer will vary a lot.

RE: Camping & Electronics

"moderation in all things". Electronics should not ruin anyone's camping trip. Hold a family discussion before the trips, where, when, and how much time the electronics will be used should be decided before you leave to prevent problems. By the way...what about adults and electronics taking away from the family time. I think this is just as important a discussion.

RE: Realistic Shower Time?

She should have no problem. When we are not on city water - we use the turn on/off method to conserve water...oh yea...I always take my shower first but DH has never said that the water was cold.
