RE: How many miles would you travel in 1 day?

How old are your kids, and how well do they travel? Despite traveling in a Class A (only need rest stops for the driver) and our kids being older (13 and 16), we've rarely been able to average 50 mph over the course of a day's travel. There always seems to be road construction, slow traffic or a hunt for a suitable fuel stop that eats into our average. I think averaging 50 mph is only realistic if you drive above the posted speed limit (we don't) or are driving all day on an interstate that doesn't go through a major city or have any road construction going on. Also, if your kids are younger I'd totally forget about WalMart for overnight stops. They're going to need to be able to stretch their legs and burn off some energy, so I'd say a campground or RV park is a necessity. Now, having said all that, we try to keep our daily mileage less than 450. And even that is a bit much to do several days in a row.

RE: apache family campgrounds myrtle beach sc

I guess mine is the "bad." Apache is old and run down and not a place we'd ever consider staying. Myrtle Beach Travel Park is our preferred campground in the area. It's right down the street (and beach) from Apache.

RE: Would one day make a difference ?

Might be the legal issue . . . if I calculated right, the pup would just be eight weeks old on 2/13.

RE: Do you really love your Dog? Good food vs cheap food.

I'd be surprised to see it as an ingredient in any feed these days after all the fuss we breeders and show people put up about the subject 25 years or so ago. Dog food manufacturers don't have to list ingredients that they themselves don't add to the food. I believe menhaden fish is one common pet food ingredient for which ethoxyquin is often used as a preservative, but it would be used by the supplier of the fish. So even though it's there, it wouldn't have to be listed as an ingredient on a dog food label.

RE: This is very strange.

Also is could be the combination of amino acids, not just the total protein. One nutritional method of treating hyperactivity and aggression is to ADD tryptophan. GRRRR makes me angry that any co. would put more or different things in their food without doing there home work. i know I'm guilty too but I thought if the low fat was good for them the Grain Free would have been better. Guess I'm to trusting. Losing battle. The internet adds another whole level of hype with little evidence. Choose carefully. Doug, DVM Personally . . . I'm not a fan of grain-free foods for dogs for several reasons. First, every dog I've tried on a grain-free food has visibly lost body condition/muscle tone. Second, I'm not convinced swapping out grains for potatoes, peas or tapioca is any kind of improvement, other than for those relatively few dogs who have a true allergy to grains. And note that I do in fact have one of those relatively rare dogs and I still don't like grain-free foods. My guy is only allergic to wheat, so he can handle foods with corn or rice just fine. Third, I'm highly suspicious of the fact that all the dog food manufacturers jumped on the grain-free bandwagon right about the time grain prices were going through the roof. I'm guessing they were able to switch to potatoes (probably less expensive for them than grains), convince consumers the grain-free foods were somehow better, and thus charge them more money. Which of course meant more profit for the food manufacturers. Now I don't know that for sure, but it seems a likely scenario to me.

RE: Do you really love your Dog? Good food vs cheap food.

After much research on ingredients and brands, reading up on dog dietary needs, "blind taste tests" on abby (really!) we settled on "Candida" brand dog food I assume you mean Canidae?

RE: Super Bowl 1/2 time show!!!

The halftime show and the national anthem are the only parts I watched. Both were very good, especially in comparison with the last few years. Was she really paid $500,000 for that!!!???? I'm not sure where you got your misinformation from, but Madonna was like almost all other halftime performers at the Superbowl -- not paid a thing. Apparently they do it for the publicity.

RE: This is very strange.

Aggression with high protein diets Do a google search and you'll find alot of subjective evidence and very sparce conclusive evidence. In practice, I have found that dogs with aggressive tendencies do better on lower protein diets. Just a thought. Good thought, but a check of the guaranteed analysis for both foods on Natura's website reveals that the protein content is the same -- 21 percent protein in both foods. As expected, the fat content is a little different, 7 percent in the low-fat food versus 11 percent in the grain free. But I don't think that would make a behavioral difference.

RE: myrtle beach in june

I think it's just personal preference. We prefer the oceanfront sites, regardless of the time of year. The dogs stay inside with the AC on, or in the shade of the awning, if it's very hot. We've got friends who like the shaded sites in the summer, but to us the bugs always seem worse there.

RE: This is very strange.

My first thought is lack of exercise and/or training, not food. Although I checked and there is quite a large calorie difference -- 317 per cup in the low fat and 450 per cup in the grain free. So if you're feeding the same amount of the new food as you were of the old, they're getting significantly more calories. Maybe that's translating into more energy they need to burn off? But I think that's reaching.

Our compressor went out, too. Luckily it was just a few days before the warranty expired. Doesn't usually work that way.

RE: MH slides

If you couldn't sit/walk on the slides when in, then our RV (which has sleeping space for seven and seat belts for ten) could only transport three. Wouldn't make much sense, would it? Not to mention that seven of the ten seat belts are on the sofa and dinette, which are on the main slide.

RE: GA - Told to vacate RV park because of dog

Tough call. Personally, we never leave our dogs alone outside for longer than it takes to step inside and grab a drink. So that's what, ten seconds max? We would never, ever sit inside with the dogs outside. But as others have said, your best recourse is to go have a calm, adult conversation with the owner. Perhaps if you admit that you were unclear about what "unattended" meant he'll change his mind.

RE: suggestions for first time in NC or SC

For Charleston -- James Island County Park might be a possibility. There are no restaurants nearby, but they have a shuttle bus to/from the historic district. Which has LOTS of restaurants. But I believe there's a $10 per person round-trip fare. It wouldn't be much more expensive to rent a car. As stated, most of the campgrounds at Myrtle Beach have on-site food, at least during the peak season. I wouldn't assume w/o checking that they'll all have food on-site in the next month or so. But I think you probably wouldn't have much of a problem finding restaurants that deliver (and not just pizza). Truthfully in your shoes and only going a few hours' drive? Assuming there's someone else coming along with a driver's license, I'd have them follow along in a car. Or plan on renting one when you get to your destination. There are good reasons most RV'ers pull a car.

RE: What do you do

Our dogs are crated with the A/C fan and a TV left on for white noise. They're also each given a frozen Kong stuffed with really good things (cooked chicken or ground beef and squeeze cheese or peanut butter). After getting the Kongs they don't even notice we're leaving. Do something to verify they don't bark while you're gone -- Explain to a neighbor what's going on and ask him/her to keep an ear on them the first few times. Or get a voice-activated recorder or the software that can be used to monitor barking. I think it's called Bark Sentry. And the first few times you leave them I'd try to just be gone for fifteen or twenty minutes and gradually lengthen the time you're away.

RE: I wonder Why

To each his own. I personally can't imagine going through the hassle of unhooking an RV every morning before we could go sightseeing and then having to hook it back up every afternoon. Or of trying to find parking for anything bigger than a Class B in a tourist or downtown area. It's WAY easier to pull a toad. And no, the mileage difference isn't very significant. When you figure in the extra fuel one would use when driving an RV for daily sightseeing, I doubt there's any "loss" of fuel at all by pulling a toad. Not to mention the peace of mind of having another vehicle in case of mechanical issues with the RV.

RE: To neuter or not to neuter...that is the question

There are numerous health and behavioral benefits of neutering. But having a five year old boy in the home, this alone -- E) being statistically at a much higher risk of developing aggression issues since 95 percent of serious/fatal bites involve an unaltered dog would be more than reason enough for me. I'm sorry about what happened to your previous puppy. But complications from neutering are pretty rare. "Complications" from having an unneutered dog? Way too common. Now that doesn't mean you have to rush out and get it done next week. My vet recommends neutering around six months old for most puppies.

RE: Myrtle Beach Campground

Everybody has their favorite MB campground. Ours is Myrtle Beach Travel Park. We have two boys, 13 and 16, and it's their pick, too. But . . . if you're only now thinking about making reservations for June, you may have to go with whichever campground has space (if any of them do). The good news is that none of them, with the possible exception of Apache, are really bad.
