RE: Getting the best mileage possible

I doubt you will save enough with any add-on that will save you money in the long run,
I did a calculation on the Banks System a year ago, and it would take me about 10 years at 5000 miles/year to pay for the 1 mpg savings I'd get with the investment.
Just do your routine maintenance....keep your filters clean, and slow down, and maybe shift to a lower gear (keeping your rpms down to that 1600 range, and things should stay about the same......increase rpms, and mileage goes down....it's that simple.
What the heck, "investment" automatically gets some link??? what is with that?? I sure didn't link anything??

RE: generator question

If the generator puts out the standard 120v 60 HZ AC and has an appropriate outlet then yes, plug the trailer in.
Ditto.
Just be aware that 3500 may not be enough to handle everything in your RV. I've got 4000 and it's OK for the A/C, and some lights, but don't think of putting the microwave on too:(

RE: A "not real" camping night tonight.....and tomorrow.....and

We did the same thing with the MH....when I was replacing the floor in our bedroom. We spent about 4 nights out there, and it was great to have it.
Also used the MH as our "Guest House" when my Sister and her son came to visit.
An added bonus!:B

Give your "fog horn" a big kiss....she sure put up with you and the misery, rather than stay home where she may have been comfortable:). I'm sure things will get better soon, so your next trip is better...

RE: Next crazy topics

I think those "Oh my God!!" passes are really relative....some may freak out, while others may not see it as any different than a hill at home, just a lot longer.
That really is the difference. I've driven up some hills that were less than a mile long, but I swear that they were 30-40 degree inclines. I would have to go down in a lower gear, which wasn't a problem, but then again, it was only about 1000 feet long.
Some of those mountain passes, can be 10 miles down....so you'll want to take precautions on how you work your brakes. The climb on the other side may or may not effect your engine and transmission, so you will want to keep an eye on them, and if needed, pull over to cool down.
You have a brand new unit, so I doubt you'll have any issues mechanically, so it's really more of an emotional and psychological thing for YOU.
It's all in how you look at it.
The last time I drove down east side of the Rockies, I had the car in neutral.....doing about 75....and would slow down to about 70, every time I got up to about 80.
I did the same thing (though with slower speeds...around 55 mph) with our new to us MH, when I brought it home from Tenn., an over the Smokies to the East Coast. Not a problem at all.
Good luck.:) Have a great trip:)

RE: Having generator problems got a few questions.

A 5Kw genset should handle the two A/C units.....
But you may want to check to see what the load is when they start up? Could be that the starting Capacitor is drawing too much, and you can have it changed out for one that pulls less amps.
You may also want to check the genset's fuel filter and fuel system, as well as the Air Filter. It is very possible that either one or both could keep the engine from running at peak performance. I've seen large diesel gensets falter when the air filter had been plugged....when a large load was placed on it.
You may also want to go buy a Ammeter that you can put on the wires that run from the Genset to the main panel, to see if you have a balanced load on your system. Depending on how it's wired. You may be putting too much load on one leg of the system.
Just some thoughts......good luck with it.:)

RE: Input from those with kids...

Don't consider yourselves a family of four......especially with an RV. There will be times when the kids want to bring along a friend, so all of a sudden (if both kids do it), you're a "family" of 6.
I like the idea that we have an RV that will handle our family of 5 without using the galley table as a bed.....though we could if we really needed it.
Always nice to have more room....but, you will "pay" for it, with addition fuel use when you travel, as well as the extra cost of the RV's price.....but that may be worth it for you, as an RV gets pretty small on a rainy day, with young children stuck inside:S

RE: First long trip. Two old Gramma's. need lots of help

It really sounds like you've got a pretty good handle on things.
Since you make shorter trips, you probably have a pretty good idea of what is involved.....and a longer trip is really the same, just more days:B
With the Wi/Fi, we'll always be a click away:)
Have a great time...and don't push yourselves to much....no reason to rush, is there??

Anyone replace awning with a longer one?

A friend of mine had the awning on his "C" get caught in the wind while driving down the road, and it rolled out.....and tore all to hell:(
He is planning to replace the awning, which was 13 years old, but was then thinking that it might be nice to get a new unit, with an added 5-6' of canopy space....to give them a larger covered area.
Has anyone done this? Were there any issues that you found when you did it? Some warnings or thoughts that I can pass along to him????
Thanks,
Bill

RE: Just some good to know Fridge info

Lots of good information for a Newbie:B
Most of us just plug in and go......and hope for the best:) Lots of folks are pulling the LP frige and replacing with a household unit.....but they aren't really all that good for boondockers.
Thanks for the information.

RE: best place to advertise to sell

The more places you try, the better. With CL being free, it's got a real advantage.
You might also want to try the local paper, e-bay, or RV-Trader or something similar in your area, just to hedge your bets, but you'll be paying for those. There is also the RV.com link for sales (I think it's still working?)...as well as other on-line options...but you'll be paying, and shipping could be a hassle, if it sells a distance from your place.
A lot of it will depend on the value, as well as how fast you want to sell, and how much of a discount you need to put on it, to get it to sell.

RE: what if?

I think it will depend on what you want from RVing. If you own your RV, and want to just "get away", then you can do that with $100 worth of gas, and still feel that you're away from home, on vacation. Skip the Latte's, and you'll be able to save that gas money, and take a trip once a month....
Will put a damper on those folks who travel across the country? Probably, but then again, it would just mean saving longer, to make it happen. I can't afford to go on a cruise around the world....at least not NOW, but if I really wanted to, I could start putting money aside, and EVENTUALLY do it.
We have no plans to sell the RV...it's paid for, and aside from Insurance and the registration/taxes, it's not costing us much sitting on the side of the house.
People who are putting their RVs in storage, and paying for it, may start rethinking about it, if they can't really afford to use it the way they had intended.

RE: Marcus and his involvement here.

Just wondering if CE (O/P) is getting a discount card from CW, for saying nice things...LOL!!!
I've watched quite a few episodes of "Undercover Boss", and it seems that the new thing (and the smart thing) that these CEOs have been doing, to help their companies, is to listen to the Customers and the Employees.....not just sitting up in their "ivory tower" listening to their "Yes Men".
As to why Marcus has no Secretary, I can't understand that one.....He should, as it would allow him to actually spend more time with the company, by having someone to help with the daily stuff that a CEO has to deal with. I applaud him for be active on this Forum, and while many of you may think that it's BS, the fact is, it's good business....plain and simple.
Our local RV Shop, Howard's RV, in Wilmington, has a monthly Seminar, on a variety of topics related to ownership in RVs. This is their way of keeping a finger on the pulse of their customers....and it's very helpful to us, as I've learned quite a bit, with their "hands on" training.
Not sure if CW does this, but it might be something to consider Marcus.....I'm sure that most of the folks who come in and learn about the various chemicals for the holding tanks, buy some of them.....know what I mean?

RE: 1996 Roadtrek grey water tank leaking

You should be able to repair it, with some sort of epoxy patch material. You will proably have to scrap/rough sand the area to get the best adhesion.
You may also be able to remove the tank, and have it "plastic welded", which would be the best way to go, but it will depend on your abilities and just how bad the leak actually is.
I would go for a quick patch first......and if that doesn't work, then go for more drastic measures.

RE: Can I cut a hole in the side of a Journey

Just be sure you know where the wires are running.:H
I want to do the same thing at the back of our MH, so I have easier access to the water pump and valves....getting too old to keep climbing under the rear bed.
You can find the door assemblies on-line, in a variety of sizes and shapes. Not really all that expensive, but remember to "measure twice (maybe even thrice:B) and cut once!!":)

RE: Replacement for Radio, DVD, etc.

I'm pretty sure that you could go into BestBuy and find something that you like, and they will install it for you. Hopefully, whoever took out the old one, didn't destroy the wiring when they did it. You may need to get a custom dash plate to make whatever you decide on, fit properly. Our son had to do that with his Civic, but it looked great when they were done....and not very expensive either.:)

RE: I need advice on Propane Bottles

I'd just swap them out at one of those Blue Ox (or whatever it's called) places that they have at Home Depot. Cheaper than buying a new tank, and cheaper than having an old tank re-certified too. Especially a 20# bottle which is very common and easy to get.
Now, if you had some sort of specialty bottle that fit your RV, then maybe I'd see which option was best.
Happy Camping:)
