RE: Upgrade Tundra to F150 HD?

We tow our camper with a 2007 Tundra. Went to Yellowstone in the fall and just got back from Flordia. Truck has always done great. My husband and I are having the "do we move up to a fifth wheel" when we retire for longer trips discussion but I am on the side of keeping our current trailer so we can keep the truck. It is five years old, looks new, has 60K miles, and is paid for. I am planning on another 5 years of towing life from this one.

RE: When are you ready to go home?

Our longest trip was three weeks last fall to Yellowstone. At the end of each day, I would say "I could live like this all the time". My husband doesn't believe me but I can't wait until we both retire and can hit the road for months at a time.

RE: Do you have your "Dream" RV? How many did it take to find it

We are on our third camper in 6 years. We will be keeping this one for awhile. The first one was a Roo 19. We didn't have enough sense to buy a camper with a slide. Our next one was the 24 ft. coachman with a slide. We had that one for three years but my husband really wanted a bedroom that could be closed off so he could sleep in. We love the one we have now and hope to keep it into retirement. The only reason we would upgrade after retirement is to get room for a washer/dryer. Still haven't decided if that will be a big deal when we hit the road for longer trips.

RE: (Winegard SK-3005 TRAV'LER) Back up plan for installation

As far as someone stealing the dish, we keep the control box locked up. One won't work without the other. If you are really concerned, you could throw a cover over the dish so it is not so obvious. We have not ever been concerned.

RE: (Winegard SK-3005 TRAV'LER) Back up plan for installation

No, my husband can get it in and out of the truck. If I'm camping alone or setting up a couple of days before he arrives, we have a folding dog ramp that I use to take it in and out of the truck.

RE: (Winegard SK-3005 TRAV'LER) Back up plan for installation

Pictures: Folded on the cart with the handle still attached. BTW, I moved the dish to the other side of the picnic table and turned it on. Somehow it found all three sats through those trees. http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n111/paphil/DSC_0073.jpg width=640 This is a picture of it in action. As you can see, the handle is removed which allows it to spin all the way around when searching. http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n111/paphil/DSC_07942464x1632.jpg width=640 The box that runs the satellite dish stays plugged in inside the outdoor kitchen. I plug the cable from the dish into the box and turn it on once I put in where we think it will work. We also bought an extra cable for the dish for those times we are further away than 20 feet from the box. I think we have only used it three times but it's nice to have as an option. Once the dish has found the sats, I unplug the cable so it is not a trip hazard and then hook up the sat cable from the dish to our input in the camper. The dish does not need any power to it once it has found the sats. I hook it up again when we are ready to leave to stow the dish. Sounds more complicated than it is...the dish is the last thing out of the truck after we set up. I hook up the power cable to the box and go inside to set up the inside of the camper. By the time I'm done inside, it has found all the sats and is ready for me to run the sat. cable to the camper.

RE: (Winegard SK-3005 TRAV'LER) Back up plan for installation

Posted By: silvercorvette on 04/17/12 12:03pm My Winegard SK-3005 TRAV'LER that I purchased from Amazon is due to arrive by the end of the day Wednesday 4/18/12. My plan is to mount it on a 1/2 or 3/4 in plywood board and clamp it to a Black and Decker workmate bench for the following reasons I don't want to put more holes in the roof and risk another place where a leak can occur. I can't park the camper in my driveway and have to park it in a storage yard and am worried it may get stolen. Having a movable dish will allow me to place the dish in a better location if the roof is blocked by trees or other objects. I am not as agile as I was when I was younger and climbing on the roof may be difficult. I just got this 2006 Jayco 5th wheel a few weeks ago but may upgrade in a couple years so I may want to take it off and install it on my next camper I am handy at running wires but am clueless as to how to snake them between the wall of a camper. I will soon be driving up to NY and will trying out a portable setup. If I decide to mount it on the roof is it something a fairly handy person can do (with the help of a neighbor. Or will I have to hire someone Has anyone installed this model dish them self? Also is anyone familiar with the construction of the 2006 Jayco Jayflight and if the is room between the walls to run wires easily? We have this dish and it is not installed on our camper. When it was purchased, we knew that we were not keeping that camper much longer. I bought a cart: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00272MFHU/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details . My husband removed the lip from the cart. The dish sits on the plastic base. Right now it is held in place with bungee cords but my husband just bought some bolts to make it permanent since it is working out so well for us. When we are ready to hook up the dish, we put the cart where we want it, remove the handle from the cart, and plug it in. If you would like pictures, I can provide some tonight when I get home. My husband can lift this in and out of the truck by himself. If I am camping alone, we have a folding ramp that I use to put the antenna in and out of the truck. This system works for us because we plan on keeping this dish for a long time - you never know what can and will happen to your camper. Also, it allows us to move the dish away from the camper if we are under trees which also happens frequently. there has been many times when a dish on top of our camper would not have worked because of interference.

RE: Carrying water in TT

When we head to a state park with no water hookups, I partially fill the tank then run the pump to fill up the water heater and pipes. When I get to the state park, just top off the tank which should not take long at all.

RE: Awnings for fiver windows

I bought my own material and made ones for my windows that are hung inside the curtains. We went that route because we didn't want anything else outside to take care of and we can install them when they are needed during the summer and take them down in the winter.

RE: KODIAK 300 BHSL

This camper has very little carrying capacity especially considering the number of people it is designed to sleep. Be careful not to overload.

RE: How do most travel trailer owners use their RVs?

We have a TT and use it for both weekend camping trips and our long vacations. When traveling, we love having it behind us for lunch stop and bathroom breaks. When we arrive, it is nice to have because my husband and I are not always joined at the hip. I may take the truck to go siteseeing while he decides to stay back and take a nap with the dogs. He will also load up his mountain bike and go try out a trail that he read about and wants to ride. I can stay back and relax or get the laundry done. The point is, we have a choice.

RE: Help pls. Lavender Oil to prevent mice in trailer

please don't waste your money on peppermint oil unless you just enjoy the smell. go out after dark and turn on all the lights inside your camper. get underneath and look closely for any light escaping. if you see any light, seal it up. if the bottom is covered, then crawl under there and spray the foam where ever you see a pipe coming through the floor. the only way to get rid of mice is to ensure there is no way for them to enter your camper.

RE: Luray VA - CG recommendations?

Endless Caverns is not open. Use Shenandoah State Park. It's a great place...

RE: Value of a convenient overnight CG

When we were heading back home from our west trip last fall we were around Toledo and looking for a place to spend the night. I called ahead to the KOA who wanted $45 for a pull thru FHU site. I kept looking and found the rest area on the Ohio turnpike that has RV sites at exit 76. We pulled in there to spend the night. It was $20 with electric. There was water and a dump station and a large area with grass and a picnic area. My husband walked over to the rest area and picked us up subs for dinner that night. I took out dogs out on their last walk around 9 p.m. that night and there were about four of us using the RV sites. When we got up in the morning, there were about 15 rigs parked. With the A/C fan running, we could not hear any interstate noise. Would love if there were more of these on the interstates.

RE: Douthat - VA State Park

I could be wrong, but I thought I read on the Douthat VA state park website that the new campground will be for horse campers. We have stayed in white oak several times. sites are large and the campground is very wooded. we usually do alot of hiking and my husband mountain bikes and likes the trails. we never leave the campground so can't tell you about the "area" around the campground.

RE: Suggestions: patio door garage separation?

Sorry, didn't realize you were looking for a toy hauler. Their toy hauler has a patio door seperating the living from the garage but it is in stock only. They are not making it anymore. There is a Mesa Range TT (MR289H) that has the hauler in the front seperated by a regular door.

RE: Suggestions: patio door garage separation?

There are several Open Range models that have a patio as an option.

RE: What is your favorite "rear living" trailer

The problem with the floor plans above is I will not have a TV blocking the view of my rear window. I enjoy my view out the back window when the weather forces us to stay inside. That's why they make so many floor plans - everyone has their own opinion.

RE: What is your favorite "rear living" trailer

Since I am partial to the open range, i need to throw this one out for you: http://www.southernrvsupercenter.com/inventory/150885/New-2012-Open-Range-RV-Journeyer-JT337RLS.aspx Even has hookups for washer/dryer. If we had the truck, my husband would be in trouble! As far as our TT, we have had it for 1 1/2 years and it has been great. Took it to Yellowstone and back during the fall and everything was great.

RE: Bathroom doors and privacy...

It was explained to me that when you were doing your business with the fan running, you wanted fresh air to be drawn into the bathroom which is why there was a gap. If the bathroom had a window then there usually was not a gap on the door because you had a means of adding fresh air into the room.
