RE: I-95 Road conditions in South Carolina

I found that, although the road is really bad, the bigger factor was that my shocks were worn out. New shocks made all the difference going through SC on 95.

RE: GM built in brake controller question

I couldn't get the brakes to lock up on either the ford or my new gm brake unit....must be something to do with how they incorporate the trailer into the braking system.

RE: How to find free Kindle books

Library loans. If your library doesn't loan kindle books, then there are several large libraries around the country that will let you buy a card for an annual fee. Philadelphia Free Public is one....$35 annual fee.

RE: 2006 Keystone Zeppelin II 303

Check the slide for leaks before you take delivery! I had a 303 and it leaked like nobodys business, the trailer sat at the dealer for 3 months while keystone stroked me until i took their buyback and bought my current trailer.
I am not saying all of them had issues, but keystone wasnt surprised about mine.
The bought me out of mine too....I wouldn't do it.

RE: What % of capacity is safe to load trailer tires?

You will be all set with the G614. It is one heck of a sturdy tire...just put them on my 15000 lb fifth wheel...two axle and about 3000 on pin.
Just make sure that you have wheels that are rated for 110 psi. Should be stamped on the back or worst case inside. Bonus is that they are speed rated for 75 mph :<)
My price last month in NH was $379 per tire, mounted and balanced on tires made late summer 2011. They were the freshest I could find. I did have a low price of $300 per tire at Discount tire...but they WOULD NOT give me date codes.
My tire installer used equal as a balancer....but used valve stems too short (after he ran out of chrome stems and had to get some at NAPA...)for the longer filtered valve cores. That little error resulted in emergency road service in VA at the campground on a Sunday am when I checked my tire pressure and the valves clogged! Tire dealer in NH has agreed to reimburse the $259.00 emergency clean, remount and rebalance required to get rid of the equal! Guess I'll keep using him, but what a pain.

RE: Dexter axel & warrenty on a bankrupt R.V. manufacturer

Good to hear that they back their product...always a surprise when it happens but sure makes a customer out of you, doesn't it!
Anyhow...since I have the same axles, I am curious as to the install procedure for the new bearing. Can you explain the procedure...thanks!

RE: Best way to jack up trailer to replace tires

My opinion is that jacking places less load on the other tires than driving up on boards. One thing you do not want to do is overload a marginal tire...which is what most of these tt's have.

RE: Help pls. Lavender Oil to prevent mice in trailer

X2. We see the peppermint oil and dryer sheets often. Both just make the vermin smell better and have softer coats as they gnaw through wiring.
I'd just go for mousetraps. The bucket trap is simple, effective, and can handle a bunch of mice when left over a winter in an RV.
Bingo! I was feeling cocky this winter after 3 years with no mice. Well, it sure is a lot if work taking everything out for washing, shampooing carpets etc. Back to the bucket trap ouside this fall and traps inside. Also going to do some spray foam work as I have not yet done it on this rig!

Dress warm in the evenings. Wind off the water will be pretty cool. We recommend the waterfront sites at the KOA (the non waterfront are really packed in) or the waterfront sites at the Moorings RV resort in Belfast, ME.

RE: Upgrading 16" China BOMBS to 17.5" Wheels/tires???

Be aware of the wheel offset issue if you change wheel size. Check your axle manufacturer specs to stay within offset specs...
Assuming it is a tri axle, I would think you would be fine with the G614. My thoughts are that the reported problems with this tire were due to overloading. You just can't run tires on a heavy trailer without a margin. I just switched out my DURO china tires and can't even begin to tell you how much more tire the G614 is. FWIW...

RE: Dually or Single Rear Wheel for towing

Depends, doesn't it. The Mad Norsky is correct.
My fifth wheel GVWR is 15000 lbs. Pin weight is about 2900 lbs. I am approaching the limit for a SRW, but chose a 2011 Chevrolet 3500 SRW duramax for my new truck. The truck sits level and has no issue with acceleration or braking...but none of them do.
I am within spec on the truck. It is far superior to my 2006 Ford F350 PSD...between the transmission and exhaust brake I rarely even have to use the brakes to stop for a light. I was opposed to the dually as I use my truck to plow in the winter, and have enough trouble with the size of the 3500 long bed anyway...
My take on the whole thing is that I have never felt a stability issue with a SRW, but sure can't deny the benefit of another set of tires back there. Crucial to your decision is the payload rating of the tow vehicle. I feel that this is one of the most important considerations in deciding what you can safely tow. They can all tow it....
Another thing to think about when considering what to buy is the length of the wheelbase of the truck. Longer wheelbases give more stability....so perhaps another question you should ask is long bed or short bed. Depends on your situation. Head to head, a dually has more capacity, but may have downside issues you can't live with.

RE: Ford's answers to the NHTSA 6.7 Investigation

Found this on dieselplace.com: (apologies if it is a repost)
Delphi
I went through the LML (CP4 affected) section over there looking for doom, and gloom. Not much discussion on Duramax CP4 HPFP failures.
Looks like ricatic is a man of legend on the Chevy diesel forums as well. ;)
Old news...but it sure tells you why you better get yourself a good fuel additive, doesn't it. The bottom line seems to be that these fuel pumps are inappropriate for the US fuel market. You can decide for yourself if you read this statement and then the US and Euro fuel standards.

RE: Ford's answers to the NHTSA 6.7 Investigation

Keep beating the horse, be it either alive or dead, until the truth comes out. I have a 2008 6.4L that is alive and well for now, but I'll never know for sure it stays that way. some of you think it's no big deal, but if Ford or my insurance denies repairs or payment based on this pump or fuel issues, I for one could not afford $10-12,000 for a new engine. I do the draining, filters, etc regularly per the diesel supplement. But there is a fear each day I take it out that it could be my last. Would you like that feeling? I doubt it.
I do have a back up plan should I have a catastrophic failure that my insurance or Ford will not cover. But I sure won't say it here.
Exactly right. Unfortunately, it often takes this type of action to get companies to do the right thing. Keep beating.

RE: Revived Trailer Tire Thread (formerly on the 5th Wheel Forum

With regard to the portion of this thread that deals with derating tires and the meaning of dual and tandem, I requested clarification from both Goodyear and MOR/RYDE....the following reply is from MOR/RYDE...my tandem axle manufacturer....
My partial e-mail..."I have two (tandem) 7000 lb axles with leaf springs on a Carriage Cameo that is rated at 14999 GVW (2600 lb is on pin when empty) ...two tires per axle and 4 tires in total. The trailer came with E rated tires and I have upgraded to G rated, but I am just trying to verify the load rating per tire. "
Their reply...
"If you do not have dual tires then you don’t have to de-rate the tires. That is only when you have dual tires. Let me know if you need anything else."
SO...there may be some confusion on this issue....awaiting reply from Goodyear.
