RE: Mapping Program That I Can Post POIs?

Microsoft Streets & Trips and also DeLorme Street Atlas are both popular mapping programs and they can both accomplish what you are asking.

RE: volumne Question

It's nothing to be embarrassed about, Salem. I suspect it has happened to most of of us at least once (if not numerous times) that we spent a long time trying to ID an issue unsuccessfully, only to later correct it by simply restarting the machine. :-)

RE: volumne Question

Hi Salem,
Have you restarted the laptop since you noticed the issue? Many of us seldom turn off our computers these days, we just close the lid which puts the laptop to sleep, but it doesn't really turn it off.

RE: email that is perfect for this forum

If you install Baby 1.0 you will promptly start running Husband 1.0 as a background process.
Agreed! Especially if you run multiple instances of Baby 1.0 simultaneously.

RE: GlobalSat BU-353 GPS unit

Works very well, I'd say BU-353 would even be a more suitable GPS unit for Microsoft to include with Streets & Trips than the units they have included with the product over the years.
Some user feedback can be read here, too.

RE: All Public Campgrounds Now In POI Mega File

Hi WA8YXM,
Larry, the fellow behind the POI Megafile, is a Microsoft employee. He created the file for the users of the Microsoft's Streets & Trip software product. When the file is in the .stt format, it is easy to use for S&T users, as there is no need to import anything. Simply click on the file to use it.
Again, this is a product designed to be used with Microsoft Streets & Trips. There may be other, more suitable products designed to be used with other manufacturer's products.

RE: Does Streets & Trips have speech capabilities?

I have the 2005 version and it talks, just haven't used it for traveling for 5 years.
Are you sure it's version 2005, or are you sure it's the Microsoft's Streets & Trips? The voice feature was really only added quite recently, in S&T 2009 (info here).

RE: Tablets and Microsoft Street and Trips

Fossilhound, MS sells an optional USB GPS with with Streets & Trips, buying the hardware/software package may be something you may consider. Other than that, BU-353 USB GPS is a popular unit people use with S&T. I think you can get it just just under $40. If the Tablet has Bluetooth, you could even consider buying a Bluetooth GPS receiver (around $60).

RE: Blocked website

If Google search results displayed a warning message, it is possible the site in question might have been hacked, which is something that unfortunately happens often to many sites these days.
I no longer see such warning in search results, and the site can be accessed from my location, so it seems the issue has been resolved.

RE: Garmin nuvi help

Hi Halibutman,
I don't use a Nuvi, but I use a Nuvi-like software, Garmin Mobile PC, installed on my laptop. I don't see a feature here which would allow me to start a POI search by clicking on a road. However, when I click (or tap) the car icon, it then lets me search for the nearest police stations, hospitals, or gas stations.

RE: What search engine?

I still use Google, but the search results are not as good as they used to be in the past. Garym114 said it well:
I got tired of Google. Put search words in and it brings up pages that do not include all the words in the search.
It seems to me that Google has overcomplicated its algorithm. It seems to want to guess user intention rather than simply searching for words users give it.

RE: This is scary! (password cracking)

How come none of these sped tests takes into account the time I get locked out of my accounts for a while because I entered the password wrong 3 times? :)
Dave
Good point, Dave. So let's calculate a bit. The article states that a password of “fjR8n” can be broken on the GPU in less than a second at a rate of 3.3 billion passwords per second. If the system, after three unsuccessful attempts to log in, will let us wait for 15 minutes before we are allowed another attempt, to enter 3.3 billion passwords would take 31392 years, provided that there is no other security measure in place, or that the system would guess the password faster, or that my math is correct. :-)

The trips that I planned in the 2006 version transferred nicely
Some people were unable to convert 2006 version files, so I'm surprised it worked for you. Thanks for the good news!
What does S&T do that Map Quest will not do?
Don, I think you would find it easier to modify your route in S&T in comparison to doing it on an online map.
