RE: Returning to Canyon De Chelly

Great trip report thanks for posting. Adding photos of past trips is a great idea. We've only been to Canyon De Chelly once but it's worth the trip.

RE: Death Valley ~ A whole different Dimension-Part 1, 2 & 3

Wow very cool and comprehensive trip report. Death Valley is a favorite of ours as well. Link to those Windows. Dometic Windows Those plastic windows scratch easily and can cost RV renters some of their deposit. Guess how I know. They have very nice built in shades or screens however. The trick is opening the window then closing the screen before the bugs get in.

RE: France, short trip to test our camper (lots of pics)

Wow! Thanks of posting. Reminded me of our European trip. Those French cattle interested me as we were told they required more care to raise compared to American cattle. Also the French cattle were much bigger than I'm used to. French beef tasted a little different as well. Though it tasted just as good maybe even better.

RE: !000 nights in our TC, all boondocking and traveling

Congrats 1000 nights in an RV is quite an accomplishment for any that don't full time. I'm afraid we will never know if we ever match your feat, as we have lost count of our nights. Though our TC has been to Key West, Florida, to Guadalajara, Mexico, to Fairbanks, Alaska and back. This week we hope to start an eastern state trip. Of course most states are east of Washington state. Retirement and a small RV can lead to lots of adventure. Hope you and your better half have lots more.

RE: Tell me about for camper and SRW truck

This quote from the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Q&A makes the rule very clear. Question: "(16) How big can my pick-up camper or RV trailer be on my ½, ¾, or 1 tonne pickup be? Do I need brakes? Do I need a special driver’s license? The camper, when loaded on to the pickup or when you tow a trailer behind the pickup, can not exceed the manufacturer “Gross Vehicle Weight Rating” (GVWR) or the “Gross Axle Weight Rating” (GAWR). The ratings can be found on the driver’s side door post." Link to the Q&A: BC CVSE Moral: don't load over your GVWR if you want to drive in British Columbia. We've made several trips into BC with our over GVWR TC but now I know I'm pushing my luck. Just like in the trailer chain thread, the Q&A page is not the law, even when written by "officials." Unless there is a specific law against hauling over GVWR, anything else saying not to do it is opinion and guidelines. OK! But someone posted on the RVing in Canada and Alaska forum that had experience with a spot weight check. Those with over GVWR weights were not allowed to continue in an overweight condition. We have decided to keep our over GVWR camper out of BC just in case. Don't want to be following my Lance on it's way to the border on the back of a tow truck.

RE: Fuel Mileage

Pardon me for sounding like a broken record. I post this in many Fuel Economy threads. The best way to compare fuel cost is Cost Per Mile. Price per Gallon in Dollars divided by miles per gallon your truck consumes. Gas=$3.44 divided by 10 miles per gallon = 34.4 cents per mile. Diesel=$3.84 divided by 13 miles per gallon = 29.5 cents per mile. Plug in your own numbers for meaningful comparisons. Note: Using 10 mpg for gas trucks makes the math easy just move the decimal point in the price. Now How much did your diesel cost, mine cost about $7000. So $7000 divided by my cost savings of $00.049 a mile means it will pay for it self at 142,857 miles. Wow I have over 155,000 on my truck I'm in the gravy now!!!!! Stop the celebration my Chevy has required new injectors $4,700 puts a glitch in my comparison. Or 95,918 more miles to break even. Obviously I haven't compared upkeep costs Oil changes, fuel filters etc. Just keep telling self "I like all that power"

RE: Truck camper for Truck

"Lots of Stuff", yes, lots of advice! Why is it so tough to go "by the book" and let people figure it out from there? Isn't that what I recommended? Click to see something that might work! Hawk They also have shell models that are even lighter than the 735 pound Hawk model.

RE: Truck camper for Truck

Wow lots of advice! Only one thing matters and that is the GVWR of your truck. GVWR=Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. Weigh your truck loaded with fuel and normal passengers. Subtract that weight from your trucks GVWR. The remainder is what your camper and everything in it can weigh. Not much right! This company makes about the lightest. They may have something that would work and you would like. Four Wheel Campers

RE: Fuel Mileage

- at 200,000 miles my diesel pickup is worth a lot more than the same truck with a gasoline engine. You may be correct. But the day I picked up my 155,000 mile Chevy with it's $4,700 new injectors I drove it around to the new truck department of my Chevy dealer. Asked about trading in in on a new Chevy. They drove my truck and their numbers for my diesel truck were the same as the Kelly Blue Book price for a gas truck. Could it be that in some areas diesels are becoming a harder sell? Not in farm country around here! Kelly Blue Book - Suggested Retail Price for MY Truck with 200,000 miles - Zip Code 72704 5.7L V-8 Hemi $18,425 6.7L I-6 Diesel $25,725 I know people that have had expensive repair bills on gasoline engine equipped Chevrolets (my son) and I know people that have not had any expensive replacements on diesels. Your mileage may vary. Your Blue Book prices are correct, BUT the Blue Book doesn't take trade in's. Dealers have their own trade in prices based on what they think they can sell your truck for.

RE: first time pulling the boat behind the TC

We've pulled ours from Washington states Puget Sound to Utah's Lake Powell and back with no problems. That's over a 1000 miles each way. Our TC is smaller than yours but our Safety View camper window and side mirrors were sufficient. Lake Powell is worth having your own boat when visiting.

RE: Cassette Toilets?????????

On last summers European trip we rented a German motorhome with a cassette toilet. We sure got tired of the darn thing after 6 weeks. Always close the toilet lid when flushing as without warning it will burp in your eye. Dumping and cleaning the poop tank every day gets old quick. It's not a pleasant task. Many Europeans always use the RV park's toilets so they don't have to use their RV's cassette toilet. Oh how we yearned for the regular RV toilet in our Lance.

RE: Truck Campers

First - Look at campers, find one you like and can live with. Second - Look for trucks that will carry your desired campers weight. This website is a good place to find real world camper weights. TCM buyers guide Just click on the brand.

RE: Trip Report: Fairytale Towns in Lower Franconia (Germany)

Thanks for posting! Your pictures are great and make me want another European trip. Like your Truck and camper very much. Like the looks of regular cab trucks. Looks just right for Europe. Better than the motorhome we rented last summer.

RE: Do you travel wet or dry?

Always wet or at least water in the fresh tank. Thats the whole point for us we almost never know where we will spend the night. So having our camper ready for any campsite of opportunity is a good idea. Traveling or destination camping probably dictates wet or dry travel.

RE: The Whazoo's trip of many colors...Or...Brokefoot Mountain

Hi Lots of Stuff, How are you? I have to say how lucky you are and how much I would give to have seen those canyons before the lake. It's a mixed bag isn't it? Love the Lake and love the canyons. And to have a couple months on the Lake, fabulous. I bet you know it well. Have a great weekend Sir... Wonderful about to start on an East bound exploration of some northern states. Want to see natural canyons No problem Whazoo! Just go to Google Earth then Fly to Broken Bow Arch UT. Zoom in and out around the area. We came in on Hole-in the- Rock Rd. Our first nights camp was under Broken Bow Arch. We then hiked down to the confluence of Willow Gulch and the Escalante River. Set up our base camp there. We were on a very large sand bar surrounded by giant Cottonwood trees. That's all under water now. But the area is very accessible by boat. A little way up the Escalante River you will see Explorer Canyon a dead end canyon. We were the first to map that canyon. Another Explorer Post had discovered and named it, But we were first to map it. Or so we were told. We found a small Anasazi pot that is now on display at the University of Utah in Salt Lake. We were not allowed to remove the artifact but mapped its location. As you zoom in and out notice the upper Escalante River canyon is still pristine and not at all under water. I understand the Escalante River canyon was the LAST place mapped in the lower 48. When our Explorer Scout Post hiked there in the late 1950's it was still unmapped. A very beautiful place improved by the lake.(click on the many Google Earth pictures) Remember very few outsiders had any idea of the wonders of the southwest in those days. Hope your foot is doing better.

RE: The Whazoo's trip of many colors...Or...Brokefoot Mountain

Thanks for posting another great trip report Whazoo! Wow Lake Powell one of my favorite places. Hiked Explorer Canyon way back before the lake started filling and I was just 15 or 16. Boated on the lake way back when I thought we were being overcharged for fuel near Rainbow Bridge. Tanks were near empty from the trip so we paid the outrageous price of 50 cents a gallon. Spent a night in a wind and rain storm holding the tent poles to keep the tent up. Youngest son held on for dear life even with water running down his arms getting him very wet. That son is now 46. Frist trip of my retirement back in 2006. The two months I spent there on my boat were not enough. Thanks for stirring good memories.

RE: Round Kitchen Sinks

We would trade our double sink for a round one anytime. Stupid double sink takes up to much counter space. When doing dishes we never use both sinks as it would use too much water. We boondock a lot. To save water start with just a small amount in the sink add silverware and glass wear. Then when several things need rinsing Do it under the faucet. Then dry or rack. We always finish without even filling the sink once.
