RE: Sealing a tent end seam that drools

One way that works very well is to simply rub the seam with bees wax. Old fashioned but reliable.
Poked around a little but I'll ask anyway - where do you buy bees wax?

Sealing a tent end seam that drools

This past weekend we had our first outing where it really rained on us (living in the coastal desert has some advantages). After raining all night, I noticed two places where the seam for the screen/window in the front and rear oozed a bit of water into the cabin. Nothing really big but enough to get the sheet & mattress damp in a couple places.
I have some Coleman "Pro-Techt" water repellent that is made for tents. It says for canvas, nylon and most other fabrics. I'm just wondering if it would be OK to spray on the seams where I saw the leakage. Anyone ever use this stuff on their tent ends? Any better products if this isn't the one?
Thanks!

RE: Towing with a 2007 Jeep Wrangler 4 door . Help !!

We have an '01 Explorer with a tow package which includes a 4.10 rear end. The owners manual says our max tow weight is 5900#. Our Jayco 19H has a weight sticker on it of just over 3700#. As others have pointed out you still have to add in propane, water, etc and of course all your "stuff" to get the real weight. Our Explorer tows it OK but it doesn't set the world on fire.
We live on the west coast so pretty much everywhere we go camping has a mountain to cross somewhere. I installed a transmission temp gauge and watch it closely when going up long grades. That is usually a 45 to 50 mph slog unless you like watching your tach hover near 5 grand.
For me, if you're going to invest in a new TV, look at something with a bit more capacity. Maybe the newer Explorers have more power, haven't seen the specs on them yet.

RE: Breaker trips almost every time

Looks like my next step will be to replace the switch. I have tried isolating the batteries with the cut off switch and then turning on the 110 but I get the same result - the breaker trips.
The cynical side of me says this is what happens when your warranty expires (last month)...

RE: Breaker trips almost every time

You can test my theory before replacing the switch. Unplug the trailer. Turn the switch on and then plug in the trailer. If the breaker does not trip, you need to replace the switch with one rated for motor starting.
That's sort of funny since I put the switch in to avoid just jamming the plug into the socket. I'll give this a try because quite frankly as a Manufacturing Engineer, I'd have a hard time arguing with an Ex Rocket Scientist!

RE: Our "wish for" RV - is there such a thing?

It's more commonly called a "Truck Camper!"
My best friend & camping buddy has exactly that and tows his Jeep quite nicely. However, I (and maybe more importantly DW) feel the layout of a travel trailer or MH is much more to our liking.

RE: Breaker trips almost every time

Does it do this when you are plugged into a proper 30 amp outlet like in a RV Park? Try a larger, wiresize, and/or shorter extension cord and see if that helps
Yep, it does it at the CG's with 30A power posts. As for an extension cord, all I am using is the power cable that came from the manufacturer which is about 15' or so and wired into the converter.

RE: Telling a poster to "do a SEARCH"

I didn't read through all 14 pages of posts but if it hasn't been said already, this seems to be how forums work. Some people are more than happy to answer any question no matter how often repeated and others feel that the person asking the question should dig around first.
I think either response is appropriate - as long as the tone stays civil & helpful. Unfortunately, "tone" isn't something easily conveyed (or appropriately received) in a text message...

Our "wish for" RV - is there such a thing?

Not that we are actively shopping for a new RV but occasionally I think about what we'd like to have. Currently we have an 19' HTT that I can pull with our Explorer. It's nice because it's light enough the Exp. can pull it, has enough ground clearance to allow us to go out in the boonies (that's mostly desert trips for us) and didn't break the bank to put it all together. But sometimes I like to think about what would serve us better...
So here's what I wish for but have no idea if it exists (haven't really found or seen anything exactly like it). I'd like a motor home that was set up to go off road in a limited way - not 4 wheel drive, just clearance and good balance. I'd like something around 20' +/- a few feet in length. It needs to have enough power to pull itself and a Jeep Wrangler (old school, not pone of the new mall crawlers) up and over the mountains.
So does such a machine exist? Can normal people afford it? (can't go Unimog shopping)

RE: Breaker trips almost every time

Hi,
Turn on the switch before you turn on the battery bank.
I'll give that a try but can you tell me why that would be an issue (there is no battery cutoff switch from the factory)?

RE: Waxing Fiberglas Sidewalls on our HTT

I'm no expert but only repeating what I have read on this forum. Most automotive waxes contain petroleum products which are bad for the decals. I have stopped using car products and went over to 303 aerospace protectant or other products that do not have petroleum products in them.

Breaker trips almost every time

I have a 20 amp outlet in my garage that is wired to a switch. When I want to charge up the batteries in our HTT or just have 110 in the trailer, I turn off the 110V switch, turn on the battery cutoff switch, plug in the trailer power line and then flip on the 110v switch. Almost every time I do this, the breaker in the trailer for the charging system trips off (actually it is only half tripped but requires a reset to work).
Any thoughts on what the issue would be - besides the fact that our warranty expired last month?

RE: MOST FAVORED HEAT SOURCE ?

We use an oscillating ceramic heater if there is electric and the propane furnace when there isn't. Just curious, if we installed an inverter, how long would a 1500W ceramic heater run before it gobbled up all the juice in our dual group 24 batteries?

RE: What were they thinking???

We'll be pulling out in about a half hour to head up the 5 for a few days camping. Since its raining out, I can only hope that we don't provide any video comedy today!

RE: Tools explained

Gentlemen how about the SAWS-ALL.
Will cut just about everyting it touches while running, and you can change blades too.
You need to add that it turns a ten minute job into a two day big $$ project in the blink of an eye!

Oh. That one again.
Sorry, I'd never seen that one here before. I guess I should surf more & camp less so I don't miss any good ones ;)

What were they thinking???

I was surfing the web looking for some interesting ideas for our upcoming trip out to the Anza Borrego desert and I came across this little jewel. I see a lot of "discussions" on this forum about what size trailer can be towed by what size TV. However, in this case, I think most people would agree this TV might be a little undersized

RE: Best options for good coffee while dry camping

I didn't read every post in this thread so maybe this has already been mentioned but - I use and Aeropress (Click here) This device works great, is well made and the coffee tastes great. Much easier to clean than a French press and all you need is hot water to make it work. For me that's about 2 minutes with a pan on the stove burner. My old drip maker took longer than that!
Edit - this only makes one cup at a time but DW doesn't do coffee and I only do a cup or two in the morning - but it's a damn fine cup of coffee!

RE: State Park or Campground

We do 90% of our camping in state and county campgrounds. The ones I like the best have no hook-ups. The spaces are usually spaced out farther than any private campground, the scenery can be amazing and often you can hit the hiking trails from your campsite. Some of our favorites were built in the '30s by the WPA. At one campground some of the sites have these stone "cabanas" with a fireplace built into the corner. Excellent for playing dominoes on a starry desert night!
A little room for us and our friends - oh, and the price is right $0

We have gone out in those temps and I like it but DW, not so much. I like a crisp morning sitting around the re-stoked fire drinking my coffee :B
