RE: Slab City - Niland, CA

We were at The Slabs for a couple weeks last winter. We had a group of folks to meet up with that we knew, and who showed us around. We had a blast! It is an interesting place, to say the least! Here is the first blog post about our visit, and 12 posts that follow by clicking the "newer post" link at the bottom of each page. Warning- LOTS of pics in my blog posts! LOL My blog posts about our stay at The Slabs

RE: Now I understand what its like to be near generators

We solared up to be able enjoy the quiet in the northwoods. But from time to time if we DO have to run the genny (quiet LP Onan built in) we first tell the neighboring folks we are starting it up at what time and for how long. Then we offer to let them plug in anything they might need charged up like cameras, cell phones, extra battery for their boat (we have an auto battery charger on board too) etc. One time a tenting gal was SO HAPPY to come over and plug in her curling iron she had brought along to a non-electric campground. LOL PS-- did you know you can get 12 volt CPAP machines?

RE: Is there any special treatment for a FILON roof ?

The Filon roof material is meant to be *free floating* on the Safaris. It gives room for expansion. There is nothing wrong with your roof. (grin) But after about 10 years, Filon is known to allow tiny microscopic cracks, which over time will develop into leaks. So most owners of the Safari's have been know to coat their roofs with an elastomeric paint (rubbery thick paint) ... Be sure to read the can and make sure it's for fiberglass products. Here is a blog post about our roof coating experience on our Safari: Coating our Filon Roof with Elastomeric Paint

RE: Clogged black tank. Help!

Our friends had a clog. They were lackadaisical about how they dumped or how much water was added to the tank after dumping. Until they had a Black Pyramid. They boiled five or six large kettles of hot hot water on the stove, and dumped them into the tank and let it set. Loosened things up and flowed again. Now they are firm believers in leaving the black tank closed until 3/4 full and then pulling the lever with a good WHHOOOSSSHHH and rinsing again and again when done. And then adding 2 gallons to start anew.

RE: ClassA travel vs Motel/Restaurant travel

In the past 15 years, we have stayed ONCE in a hotel... (went to a concert 200 miles away in winter) -The room smelled like smoke, but was considered a non-smoking room. -There was broken glass beside the bed in the carpeting -The bedspread felt *stiff* in places -The pillows were flat and we had to call twice to get more and wait -When I wanted to take a shower at 11 pm before going to bed, the shower would only operate on cold--- the mixing valve was broke! The sink did have hot water so we had to be satisfied with a sink wash up, or change rooms at 11:30 pm! No shower in the morning either. Ewwwww We got $20 knocked off the hotel bill upon checkout, but you can bet we appreciate travelling in our motorhome! We just came back in April from 50 days on a trip, we spent under $4000 total... that is on diesel, all of our food, some campgrounds (mostly boondocked) some restaurants, souvenirs for the kids and grandkids, entrance fees to national monuments, a repair bill, plus we had our 2 dogs along. That is under $80 a day. Could never have done all that in a car, restaurants and hotels!

RE: What is Actual Cash Value?

And your inside contents is a whole 'nother ball of wax... Most RV policies only cover $500 of personal possessions. That is it. Then you have to prove and list and dicker to see if anything else is covered by your homeowners insurance. We carry an extra rider with our RV policy for additional full replacement value coverage of things we leave in the RV all of the time. Costs us an extra $100 a year for $9,000 worth of personal possessions. (think of things like hubby's large assortment of tools, dishes, bedding, clothing, games, movies, cds, cameras, laptops, air card, antenna, hubby's golf and fishing gear, handheld cb's, washer/dryer, my craft items, and our solar panels on the roof)
