So did you ever get the beast running?

RE: The economy must be improving

A few people that I know that have been out of work have gotten jobs, and my real estate person told me she is all of sudden busy again. The euro is going to be hard pressed against the dollar soon. Laissez rouler les bons temps

RE: 1996 F53 460 water pump change

The start squeal may be the belt tightening. Unless the pump is actively leaking, I'd leave it alone. Not to mention that new pumps do fail due to bad quality control. Now that would really be a kick in the pants.

RE: Homesick for the sunshine!

Nope (just pulled in a week ago.) 70's and abundant sunshine here in Northern MN. Lake is twinkling, dock and boats are in, the full size gas grill is uncovered and friends and family will be taking advantage of it soon, craft cubby is already humming with quilting activity, and birds are coming to the feeders. Nothing beats MN when the weather is good. Now in October that's another story. We'll be itching to get the move on. Till then we're happy to belong to the 70 degree club "Up North."

RE: Kohler Confidant 5 Generator

Please do me a favor and disconnect the negative battery lead that the generator uses prior to any cleaning. A stray ark can really wreck a good day. After you clean all your connection then reconnect the negative lead. I think you still have a plugged jet somewhere. When you manually choked the carb it had enough air/fuel ratio to fire off. Once it was running it was pulling enough air that it would also suck gas. Let the SeaFoam do it's job overnight and maybe the gunk in the jets will disolve. Don't ding too much with that electric choke. They seldom go bad on engines, but once you change the settings they are a PITA to figure out what is going on. Worst case is then someone will start throwing parts at it trying to fix the bad item expecting the choke was doing it's job the whole time. Good luck, SeaFoam, a cold one, and some TV time has fixed many a no-start issue. Below is a clicky of a main jet, it is what is inside your carb and has a needle that goes down into it. If there is any gunk in that tiny hole, you'll get what you're talking about. Picture of a main jet.

RE: THE GOOD

Funny, "THE GOOD" has gotten the least amount of posts and hits of your three threads. Guess Class A owners really want to hear and talk more about "THE BAD" and "THE UGLY" of RV'ing then "THE GOOD". Well my post should put it back on top of the Class A forum, we'll see what happens after that. A very unscientific human behavior research study is now going on :R ;) YMMV

RE: 1996 F53 460 water pump change

I'm from the other camp, leave it all alone except for the anti-freeze. Swap that out and enjoy the rig. Don't fix things that ain't broke. The best thing you can do for that class A is use that time and money you would spend working on the rig by using it to go traveling. That 460 will be just fine if you leave it alone.

RE: Kohler Confidant 5 Generator

I'm guessing that the pipe you're talking about is nothing more then a crank case breather pipe into the carb. If it is, it's no big deal. Since you got a small start with the carb spray go back to getting some SeaFoam into the carb bowl via the fuel line. Let it sit overnight and do it's magic. You might just be surprised that it will start tomorrow. A starter pulls a lot of power and can be burnt out if you hold the start switch too long. May have some form of a override to stop you from doing that by dropping out of gear.

RE: rebuilding HWH leveler

You ever think about using ATF stop leak? Would be the simple fix, but would make sense to call HWH to verify it won't do any damage.

RE: Kohler Confidant 5 Generator

More then likely the main jet is gummed up. Go get some SeaFoam and attempt to get it into the carb bowl thru the gas line. Let it sit overnight. If it does start the next day expect to see a bunch of smoke. The other thing to do is find the main jet screw adjustment and turn it 1/2 turn out, then back to the original place. This will break any varnish that may be in that area. As a sidbar note if you have some carb cleaner, gently spray it into the carb as you crank it over. If it starts and runs on the carb cleaner then you pretty much know the main jet is plugged. Trick here is not to throw parts into it at the starts. Assume everything is OK, but something is just plugged and needs to be cleaned.

RE: Furnace not putting out heat; fan works

Is this the first time you've used the furnace for the season? If yes, then maybe this will help you. When you turn on the furnace you should hear the fan come on, then a click, then the sound of the flame. If you hear the click and no flame or even the flame but then hear it go out do this: Without turning the furnace off, just turn the thermostate to the lowest setting. Wait about 10 seconds then turn it all the way up. Listen for the click and the flame. You may have to do this 6-12 times before the furnace will take a hold and work correctly. If that doesn't work then you may need to do some repair on the furnace.

RE: Buying a MH - Advice for a newbie? Good decision?

It's very possible you found yourself a nice Class A. Owner number 2 may have gotten all of the problems from non-use and has fixed them. Having two new outside tires is a concern. Make sure the other four are up to snuf. A blow out on the steer tires can wreck an otherwise good day. An inside dually blowout can do a lot of damage to tanks and running gear. Since you're new to Class A's remember if it does not have slide outs it's going to be harder to sell unless the price reflects it. It's not going to be long where people will be expecting at least two slides on a used class A.

RE: Sealent Tape, Which to Use - Putty, Butyl or PVC

What is the difference between Butyl and putty tape? For me, they are the same thing. What I would do is forgo the forum and call the maker of the rubber roof to see what they suggest for their brand. I would also suggest you think of running a bead of Dicor non-leveling chaulk along the topside of the rail once it's all been sealed with the tape. Last but not least use stainless screws if possible, plus I like to put a little plumbers putty into the old screw hole prior to running the screw back in.

RE: Buying a MH - Advice for a newbie? Good decision?

The low mileage is a real concern. Just the opposite of what a person would think right? I would run everything on that house. Water heater, genny, furnace, fridge, jacks, AC, waterpump, everything. Corrosion will set into all of that stuff real fast when they aren't being used. Sounds like you've been up on the roof already, but make sure it's been sealed and is in good looking order. Last thing you want is a leak that hasn't been found yet. Check real careful around the ladder points on the roof. If all of that stuff check out then it would be onto the brakes, tranny, and engine. If that all checks out then you're down to the famous age of the tires. Learn how to read the DOT code on them so you have a handle on the true age of them and not the depth of tread. Then since you said you would be a new Class A owner remember the rule of thumb is every 5 years you lose about half the value of the rig. Every mile you drive it (if you include every last expense) will be about $2-3. Hope some of that helps, and good luck.

RE: Curious about towing with a Class A

The big question, would the person need a brake system if he was towing the pontoon with a truck? Most if not all pontoon trailers do not have brakes (at least the ones I've used.) Pontoons are fairly light even with full furniture on them. Many are lighter then tow cars. So if you can tow a car with your A, then I'm sure a pontoon is within the realm of reason. Now getting into the boat launch and out and gassing up, that's another story.

Geezz.... You don't really expect to have a gun shoot out in a state park do ya??? Time for a reality check and a little less news watching.

RE: Mosquito aversion

Once we were down by the lake my wife commented on all the smoke. Once we got closer it turned out to be all mosquito's. I stopped the car under them and was covered by them within seconds. Turned on the wipers to see even. When we were away from the lake there wasn't a problem at all. Oh, that's fabulous! I'd show this to the wife but she'd probably run screaming off into the sunset, never to be heard from again! Well my wife had the exact same feelings at that point in time. Good news is once we left the lakeshore there was no problems at all. From the bridge we then spent a few nights along Hwy 2 on our way to MN. No issues at all, but it was early May and the lows were in the 40's.

RE: Opinions on 1997 Georgie Boy Cruise Master

Also, GBM did an excellent job at tank placement back in the day. For old gassers, they drive very well when fully loaded. What sold me on our our Cruise Master when we first started to MH was the frame construction. To date no delam, or leaks anywhere. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z157/JJNowak/RVNet/Schematic.jpg
