RE: Only 11 days before heading north to Alaska

Leaves are just popping out here on the Kenai. By time you get here it should be nice and green. Spring up to this point has been very nice and some people are flogging the water. Was in Anchorage this weekend and on the way back the Hooligan are running in Turnagain and Salmon are starting to show in some areas. "Gripnrirod" you ask'n another Alaskan where he caught a fish? How have you lived so long.:D Hook

RE: Anybody have ferry tickets on the Matanuska?

Many things could have caused the collision. If doing a 180 with a running tide, the bow thrusters may have failed, reversing may have failed, etc. They do not stop on a dime. When turning to get the rudder to respond you have to have power. Tide may have been to strong to let the helm to respond quick enough if they were in a close quarter turn. I do not know if they have direction prop propulsion in the stern other then rudders. The investigation will bring out the problem. Many times it comes down to a control error. Hook

RE: Sigh... Truck Camper Damaged in Shipping!

When you saw it was it on the jacks or setting on a shipping crate saddling the camper was the weight of the camper on the floor or was the weight on the jacks. If on the jacks look for damage where the jacks mount. If the weight was on the the floor then I would suspect possible damage on the frame where the straps went around the roof. I agree with others that you should get a new one but I also realize that that may not happen. The negotiations should be between the dealer and the shipper with you involved as to what is exceptable. If no frame damage is involved and the damage is just on the skin and superfical I would probably just except local repair. Have you dealer contact Karens RV and have someone from their repair department meet with you and the dealer to inspect the damage. Possibly Karens would have to take it to the shop to peel the roof and wall skin to inspect for frame damage. I feel you pain, hopefully things will work out. It would be nice to get a new one but I don,t think thats going to happen, not this summer any way. If you can get a good repair try to negotiate a discount from the dealer, alto not his fault he may give up some of his profit. Some years back a friend had a new Corvette ship up and it got here with pitting in the paint and a small dent in the roof. He did not get a new vette just body repair and a paint job. His choice was to have it repaired here or refuse the shipment with money back and no vette at all. They were not going to send him a new Corvette. Hook

RE: Kyllonen's RV Park on the Kenai Peninsula

Stopped at the Kyllonen's RV Park today on our way back from Homer. Altho small it looked to have adequate room between camp sights. If your located on the river side there is a very nice view where the river enters the inlet and of Cook Inlet. If on the road side not much of a view but it is only a short walk away. It is about a half mile walk to the beach at the tractor boat launch. I was suprised to see the sign say full hook ups and showers, I thought it was a dry campground. I would suggest you try and request one of the sites overlooking the river with the view, the road side is quite close to the road and I know they have alot of traffic going to the tractor launch. I also suggest to bring good ear plugs for sleeping, you may need them in other places that you camp. The logging trucks love the Jake Brake especially when campers are along the roads.:B I sent you a PM, did you get it?? Hook

RE: Kyllonen's RV Park on the Kenai Peninsula

You will find that most of the private and city campgrounds here do not have much room, sometimes a matter of only several feet when slideouts are out. I have driven by Kyllonen's RV Park and during the height of the season and it does look quite cozy in there. The season here is quite short. The camp grounds have to make their money when the tourists are here so they pack them in. At the Anchor Point boat launch you can excess the beach for free camping but you have to have 4 wheel drive and a little savy when driving in beach sand but there you will have more room. In Homer is the city beach parking. On the right side of the spit it is not staked out so sometimes you can get a little more room. On the left side the spaces are divided by logs so again quite close. Deep Creek on the beach seems to alittle more spacious, maybe Sue, "Fullmoonoversalem" will chime in here. She was host there for several years. Hook

RE: Taking an inflatable to Alaska

When you say rivers with a canoe just remember you may not be able to paddle back up river. If you roll over there may not any way to save you if you get swept down river. Many of the rivers have many sweepers, rocks and trees coming down. A river may be gently flowing and a mile down class 4 or 5 rapids like Six Mile on the Kenai. I would also recommend you stay off the Kenai River. Hook

RE: Blackout curtains for looooong AK days?

Do what the Cheechakos do, just get a cheap roll of tin foil. I think it is mind over matter, I just close my eyes and presto its dark. :) Hook

RE: Spare tire for diesel pusher?

A friend of ours has it mounted to the top of his roof in a bag. He travels all over the place with it. I think it is a used one he took off the front when he put new ones on the front. We lifted it up with my Bobcat and if he needs to use if he just lowers it down with a rope with a couple of wraps around a tubular bar that he mounted to the roof. It's mounted on a piece of outdoor carpet with the carpet facing down. He also carries a roll of carpet, about 4 ft wide that he uses against the side to the motorhome when lowering. The whole thing is kind of crude but it works for him. Hook

RE: Looking for camp spot near anchorage for summer

If you do not want to stay in Anchorage the closest private camp grounds that may give you an extended stay would be in the Palmer-Wasilla area. As far as renting a boondock spot, don't know, maybe place and ad on the Anchorage Craigs List and someone may respond that would have a spot you could rent. I have boondock property that I could rent you a spot but I am 178 road miles from Anchorage. Hook

RE: Ordered : 2012 Wolf Creek 850

Conrads on the new camper. Altho we do not have a Wolf Creek we are very happy with our 850 length for weight, ease of removal, which we unload when ever we are in Homer or Seward. Its length allow us to pull the Halibut boat or the cargo trailer with ease. It is small inside but just with the two of us it is cozy. I installed a Wave 3 heater an we enjoy that very much with those cool mornings on the Homer Spit. I did not put on airbags but install Super Springs and they are working very well and upgraded the tires to 265 grade E. Rig handles very well with just the camper and pulling. I know you will enjoy your camper. If you get down to the Kenai we would like to see it. Hook

RE: Taking an inflatable to Alaska

Several lakes you can fish on the Kenai are Engineer, Hidden, Stormy, Johnson. Some of these do not allow motors. In Homer you can launch off the beach either on the inlet side or the bay side. There is dry camping on both sides of the spit. Fish on the inlet of the Fishing Hole for salmon or if you are careful up the bay for Halibut or on the inlet side up to several miles out. Just watch for building seas and beat if back if it starts chopping up, usually in the afternoon. You may want a wheel kit for launching. Fishing the Kenai River you can launch at Centenial, Pillars, or Eagle Rock and back bounce for Kings or if the Reds are in find the places where other boats are tyed to the shore and twitch for Reds standing on the shore in hip boots. Not sure how well the 8hp will take you back up river. I do see inflatables on the Kenai River, out of Deep Creek, Ninilchik, and Homer so it is doable. If you fish bring it. Hook

RE: 2012 AF811!, but which to buy happyjac or torklift?

My TL's are not at 45s but they are angled and have not had any front to back movement. I do not have any experience with HJ but with my research I feel more comfortable with the TL frame mount. I am thinking that after 10 years of these salt roads, the TL may have to be replaced due to rust. If that happens I will build my own, every thing is available from Alaska Steel and I can weld. Bought my toy hauler a few years back from Rob. I negotiated with him for 6 months with one he had on the lot and during a late December snow storm and a call to the owner who was in sunny Arizona, excepted my offer without a counter offer. Get your new rig up and running stop in and see us down here on the Peninsula. Just for your info we went from -26 last night to +15 this morning.:) Hook

RE: Advice, Looking at purchasing this spring.

I put on a set of Super Springs and have Torklifts. Most of the time I do not know the camper is back there. I would not recommend air bags either. Fastguns are nice but I do not have them, it does not take me long to spin loose the spring turnbuckles and I drop the camper alot because of the boat I tow and have to launch. Hook

RE: How many of us in Alaska?

Sue Since I started to keep track I have 114 Alaskans on my list that are registered with RVnet and have posted. There may be some I missed and some have moved away. We are going to the State Fair in Palmer on Sept 1st thru the 2nd. Let us know if you get any interest. We are also available on the weekend of Sept 10th and 17th if you get a gathering on the Peninsula. Hook

RE: Where to Hide or How to Secure Gun in TC or Truck

Hello All, Does anyone have tips on gun security in thier Truck or TC? What safes are there for handguns or Rifles? Where to hide? I assume you place ammo in different location? There are several safes available as you can see already posted. I have had several hiding places now and in the past that can be used, most requires doing some reconstruction in the TC. I store the ammunition in the weapon. PM me and I will share hiding places I have developed in the past. Hook
