RE: Scary Handling Problem

I thought "tight steering box" from a comment earlier in this thread. There's an adjustment screw with lock nut on the top of the steering box. It can be used (sparingly!!!) to reduce free play in the steering wheel. But if it's set too tight, the steering won't want to return to center. You'll also have to force it off of center. Having to force the steering will result in exaggerated steering response. But in ordinary conditions, I wouldn't expect a steering box to wear enough to persuade anybody to tighten it much before 100,000 miles.
Have you owned this coach all along? If you just got it used, I wonder if somebody else had the Scary Handling Problem and tinkered with the steering but never found the real problem.
I agree with j-d...before I added extra +caster to my 2004 E450 I felt my steering box was too loose. Once the +caster was added this "too loose" symptom disappeared.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

Quick update. After miscellaneous parts being replaced, new shocks and alignment, the handling is better, but still scary at times. Next thing is to have our friend try towing our car and use our tow bar. More later.
What are the before and after front Caster settings?

RE: Scary Handling Problem

... How's that for a mouth full.
That good! There is also a front moment arm from the rear axel to the front axel pivoting at the rear axel. Not having enough front end +caster adds to the instability of the system and should be the first and least costly step in dampening. IMHO.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

At the risk of sounding like a broken record...make sure you have a proper front end alignment on the motor home. The specified E350/E450 +caster range is about +3.0 to +7.0.....any +caster less the about +5.0 is not acceptable.
Sorry, my oops, the specified range is about +1.0 to +7.0....

RE: Do all RV's pull to the right?

.... Why can't they align this thing?
Speaking from experience, from these tire chain stores, adjusting the toe is a 10 minute task...adjusting the camber or caster can be a can of worms! The approach one shop I took my E450 to was to tweak the toe and jury rig the camber and caster so they looked perfect on the paper report, charged me their $165.00 and went on to the next easy prey. RE: Im having problems reading my multimeter

Hey- I bet a *lot* of us learned/started on analog meters, where the scales were all there...
Now, I don't think I own a digital non-autoranging meter, and I have a number of inexpensive ones.
An autoranging OHM Meter would be very confusing but an autoranging Volt meter or Amp meter would be more so user friendly.

RE: Do all RV's pull to the right?

While I cannot speak for the sprinter chassis I can say the +caster on an Ford E350/E450 has a slight bit of MORE +caster on the RH wheel to allow for a road crown. The more + the caster the more directional stability at highway speeds.

RE: Clear, oily liquid on floor under kitchen cabinets

check your cooking oil container.
Yep, that was my guess, also. Had that issue a few years ago.
Stored liquids will expand and contract with temperature changes and this action could cause leaks in certain containers such as spray bottles.

RE: An Automatic 10% Increase In Fuel Economy For Everyone

I highly doubt the added fuel eco theory but I have had fuel weeping out of the filler on a warm day after fillling up in the morning. So yes, the gas can and does expand when the temperature increases.
Yes this is true BUT the BTU content is based on the MASS (weight) and the mass does not change if there is no loss of fuel due to leakage.

RE: alignment

From my experience with a Ford E450 Class C more caster is good for better/best high speed stability.

RE: Newbie Question About Tank Sizes

In some RVs, mine for example, the bathroom sink is plumbed into the black tank. This is probably done for ease of manufacturing but it does help equalize the filling of the waste tanks.
ditto here except it is a design to add liquids to the black water tank to prevent mountains.

RE: Suburban furnace quits at night!

Your symptoms are similiar to a situation where an oil trap in the copper line to the furnace would stop gas flow when the oil in the trap was at a cooler night time temperature but would allow the gas to pass at warmer day time temperatures.

RE: Surburban Furnace Intermitten Problem

also, it is possible to have oil trap in propane line to furnace..and it works OK when outside air (OAT) is warm vs no worky when OAT is cold. Especially possible if a TT or 5er where propane bottles are used.....

RE: Water Pump Runs Continuously

The pump pressure is supposed to be held by 3 rubber diaphragms (check valves) in the pump. If there were crud holding one of these diaphragms open you might have a similiar set of symptoms.

RE: Voltage check on solar panel output (WOW)

I tested the panel in bright sushine and got the following results.
Voltage 21.3--varied by tilting panel.
Panel rated at 600 milliamp and best it would do is .38 MA Is that 380?
With test leads at the 10A and com on the meter.
I covered the panel and it went to 00
So it looks like its been damaged.
Gotta get a new replacement.
0.38 Amps is 380 milliAmps. It should have produced about 0.5 Amps (500 milliAmps) into the 10 Amp range of your VOM. From the info you have posted, the panel is probably faulty in that it apears to have an internal high resistance and unable to produce a normal amount of current in direct sunlight even though it has a normal open circuit voltage.

RE: Voltage check on solar panel output (WOW)

When you are open circuit there is NO current. Voltage by itself means nothing, current by itself means little, it is Voltage x Amps = Power that matters.

RE: Over-filled black tank while back flushing

Re: the bang, here is a theory. The column of water in the vent pipe would place 0.5 PSI per foot of height. On an 8 foot vent pipe this would amount to 4 PSI. Having 4 PSI pressure on all 6 surface areas of the tank would distribute a lot of hydraulic and mechanical pressure which could cause an unmoveable (anchored in some fashion) bonded joint to fail with a bang. Just a guess.
