RE: I still read books, the kind without batteries!

My wife and I still read paper books and I still read a printed version of the newspaper every day.

RE: I am thinking about becoming a teacher--looking for opinions

For me, the worse parts outweighed the best parts so I quit teaching after 3 years. Discipline was the hardest part for me. That's one area where it can be an advantage to be an older adult vs. someone fresh out of college. Keep in mind that what works for military discipline won't fly in a school where most parents think little Johnny or Suzie can do no wrong.

RE: conspicuity tape

I've thought about putting a strip along the rear bumper and maybe adding some on the sides. It's one way to make your camper easier to spot when walking back from the restrooms in the dark.
Then again, I have a 3rd tail light that fits in the receiver on my Jeep when I'm not towing and a 2 small pieces of conspicuity tape on the "frame rails" (not sure what they are really called in unibody construction) that stick out just below the rear bumper.

RE: nutrition facts, carbohydrates?????

Look for foods that are higher in fiber (like whole wheat bread) which I think are supposed to slow down your body's ability to convert complex carbs to glucose.

RE: Shopping for a new car I like . I can't find one.

I think you might have to go with an SUV or pickup if you want a "full size" vehicle. Many of them have a very comfortable ride and quiet interiors. Our Jeep is just about as quiet as my Dad's Oldsmobile from the early 2000s.

RE: Where are all the young(er) TT/RV camping lovers?

We have no kids and began camping in our early 30s (we're in our early 40s now.) and usually stick to state parks or the occasional KOA and RV resort for long trips. During the summer, it's about 1/2 families with kids and 1/2 senior citizens. In early spring/late fall, it's almost all retired people.

What cars do you currently own? Other than some of the retro-styled cars such as the Camaro, Charger, and Mustang, it seems like just about every car looks the same.

RE: food and fun in Seattle

The Seattle underground tour is good, although it's not haunted. That's the Portland underground :-) If you take I-84 through Utah and Oregon, take the Pendleton underground tour. It goes through the tunnels the Chinese were forced to sleep in, tunnels carrying valuables from the riverboats to the banks, and a brothel.
The Boeing plant in Everett has tours through part of the world's largest building by volume where they assemble 787s. The first stop in the building is a utility tunnel that is a straight shot across the 1/2 mile wide building.
There is a nice Museum of Glass in Tacoma and the Experience Music Project is good for anyone who likes rock and roll music.

RE: Blanket Reprimands

As others have said, it's a copout and a way to avoid having to actually discipline any one person or group of people. Around this time last year, our manager sent out an e-mail to everyone reminding them to be on time after I told him 3 specific individuals were late the majority of the time. There are only 5 people that start at 5:00 AM so it's easy to notice when they come in the door late. After that, I began logging how late people were and one person's total added up to 12 hours in less than 8 months!

RE: afternoon at the park

The subject of dog pooh comes up at over 1/2 of our HOA meetings. We even spent money to buy some doggy bag stations and stock them with bags, yet many owners just leave presents in a neighbor's front yard or in the park. Lots of people let their dogs off leash in our park even though city codes and the CC&Rs require it.
The majority of these scofflaws will reply with a curse word and/or middle finger if you mention the leash requirements.

In 1988 there were 25 petroleum refiners in America. They have merged into 7 companies now.
.. Where are housing and transportation?...

For me, it's cherry pie filling to put inside the bread for our sandwich makers that go on the campfire.

RE: Diesel MPG?

I have a 2008 Grand Cherokee with a 3.0 liter diesel engine that has a particulate filter on the exhaust. My combined city/highway mileage is around 21-22 MPG and most Hemi owners report around 13-15 MPG (depending on their driving habits, of course).
Towing at highway speeds with our old Durango was about 8 MPG while the Jeep gets 12 MPG.

RE: Alaskan Cruise

We did a cruisetour with Royal Caribbean. They have plenty of dining options and we never set foot in the main dining room. We did the land portion from Anchorage to Fairbanks first and the cruise on the 2nd portion. The cruise was more relaxing since we didn't have to worry about packing our bags every morning and getting them out at a certain time so they could be loaded on the bus.

RE: Gas Diesel Fuel Price Difference?

Ditto for most newer engines. The 3.0 liter CRD in my Jeep is smooth and quiet. It doesn't produce any soot and the exaust smells better than gasoline exhaust when I run biodiesel. :)
I disagree. My 6.7L PSD is quiet; doesn't shake, rattle & roll; never any soot; exhaust has no more smell than any other gas vehicle out there.

RE: Green pump and green handle does not equal DIESEL fuel

I regularly have people coming up to me thinking I'm stupid or crazy when I pull up to the diesel pumps with my Grand Cherokee. :)
There were many (not sure how many) 2007 Grand Cherokees with diesel engines that were filled with gasoline on the assembly line. I'd hate to be the person who did that.

RE: NIMBY - Greed or Self Preservation?

Last fall, there were still 16,000 job openings in the oil fields.
It's pretty hard to build new housing and utilities for a city of 18,000 when the nearest "big" city of 30,000 - 40,000 was devastated by flooding last spring. The next closest metro area with about 110,000 people is 4 hours away.

RE: Best overall athlete? ... the hockey player!

Speaking as someone who grew up in North Dakota and could barely ice skate going forward, it's not easy to skate backwards and forward all while moving a little rubber disk around the rink. :)
Just about every sport has athletes with incredible skills and/or physical ability and endurance. Hockey and soccer are both sports where "average" size people can do well. Diego Maradona might be the best soccer player ever (if he isn't, he's in the team picture) and he was ony 5' 5". Pele was 5' 8" and Franz Beckenbauer, my favorite player as a child, was about 6 feet.
