RE: Polson / Flathead Lake

I am thinking that a week in Polson might be a long time. You may want go a little futher north to Big Fork on the NE corner of Flathead Lake. It might be a more central area to see Glacier NP and the area roundabout. Our son just moved to the area last year and we have been thru there on several other trip to Canada. If you are going to Coeur d'Alene you might want to go up thru Sandpoint to Canada and then come back down thru Kalispell to Glacier NP and Flathead Lake area.

RE: Pulling through Salt Lake City

Anybody pull through SLC west to east on I80 lately' Heading through there tomorrow or Thur. I might add,it is a pretty good pull over Parleys Canyon on 80 just east of Salt Lake, there are better routes, but a little out of the way if you coming from Nevada on 80 . I would go north on 215 ,and 15 ,and catch 84 east, then it intersects with 80 a few miles east of Morgan. IMO a better route out of Salt Lake to Wyoming if you are towing. This is excellent advice for going east or west. You miss the grade between Park City and SLC on I-80 and the traffic. I would not want to pull or desend that grade at all.

RE: beach trip

You guys make a little jealous. Only a little though! I am headed to a mountain trout stream with my fly rods. The DW would probably rather be at MB, that where she vacationed in early teens with her family.

RE: Panama Canal

The problem is not the indigenous populations in the Darian Gap, it is the drug runners that are dangerous and lethal.

RE: Fishing on Vancouver Island I? If Seals Leave Any.- Photo

As an elk hunter and fisherman, I see there seems to be a correlation here. Elk populations have dropped because of increased populations of the wolf. Fish populations have dropped because of the river wolf. Looks like they both need to be thinned out.

RE: US-191/189 from Rock Springs WY to Jackson WY

On my old copy of S&T that boundary on 191/189 is marked 'The Rim'. http://www.sublettewyo.com/index.aspx?NID=287 Is a county road report that makes reference to 'The Rim'. It is apparent from Google Maps Terrain mode that the highway has gradually climbed to 8000' from the SE. At the forest boundary it starts dropping down along a river canyon. None of it looks very steep. It may also be called the Hoback Rim. Rim seems to be a Wyoming name for a ridge, and gap a common name for a pass. Hoback Rim is correct. The Gap had me :h for a moment. Actually there is an RV park there called Rim Station. It is a very subtle climb from Pinedale to there. Then over the Rim to the Hoback headwaters, through Bonderant and down the beautiful Hoback River canyon. About half way down is road heading north to Granite Hot Springs, a winter favorite accessable only by snowmobile.

RE: US-191/189 from Rock Springs WY to Jackson WY

There is a new bridge being built across Snake River at Hoback Junction. That construction affects less than 1 mile of the road. It is a beautiful drive from Pinedale to Jackson. Enjoy!

RE: Yellowstone in September

No matter what other conditions may be, that time of year is very busy in the Park. If you can go later you will enjoy it with less crowds.

RE: Jackson Hole, WY Stuff to Do

The Wind River Reservation near Lander does not have much to see. IMHO. There is an old cemetary north of Lander that has the graves of Sacajawea and Chief Washakie. The west side of the Wind River Mts. are much more interesting to me. There is the western town of Pinedale and many mountain lakes and streams. And there is the site and museum of the first 1825 Mountain Man Rendezvous in the west. About 20 south of Pinedale on the road to Rock Springs, the old Oregon Trail crosses the highway. But if I had to choose between going back east this direction or through Cody, I would not miss the museum in Cody.

RE: Jackson Hole, WY Stuff to Do

"The Snake is rarely dangerous in that stretch because the water flow is primarily managed for tourism (commercial rafting) and not irrigation." NOT! The water in the river is controled for the irrigators of the State of Idaho, who own the water rights to it. Commercial rafters have to use whatever water comes down the river.

RE: Jackson Hole, WY Stuff to Do

The last time we were in Jackson we went white water rafting. My nephew still thinks it was one of the best parts of the trip. Be very careful on the whitewater rafting. People get drowned on these trips every year on the Snake River. Hope your comments don't scare people! The rafting trips that originate in the national parks are very safe. You might be thinking about the river in different areas or through canyons. In the park the trips are slow meandering in gorgeous surroundings. My post says whitewater rafting. I am not aware of any sort of commercial rafting inside of Yellowstone Park. There are many outside of the park. I am specifically talking about the Snake River Canyon south of Jackson. If that is where they are thinking of going, they ought to be scared. This year will not be as dangerous as most years as there is less water run off. You know I have been around this area for over 40 years and I believe the unfortunate death last year was the only one I recall that occurred during a COMMERCIAL rafting excursion. There may have been more but I sure don't remember one and considering the number of people these folks take down the Snake every year, their record seems to be excellent. Now, the non-commercial, amateur rafters and kayak bunch always seem to have accidents regularly on all the rivers in this part of the west but the commercial outfits have an enviable record of safety. I have lived just 20 miles from Snake River for over 60 years and my mother has been here 87 years. She agrees with me. You are right in that there are some idiots that float it. I was fishing from the bank of the river one time when a small 3 man rubber raft came by. In it were 3 people, 1 man and 2 women. One of the women looked to be at least 8 months pregnant. None of them had a life vest on.

RE: Yellowstone and Surrounding Routes

Hi all. Going to Yellowstone and have a mild fear of heights especially when a drop-off is just next to highway at elevation. Knowing this fear, what routes should I avoid? Thanks. There are many places in the Park that have drop-offs next to the highway. One of them is just 10 or so miles north of the south entrance. I happen to think that view is one the more beautiful spots in the Park. So either you will have to put blinders on when you get near to them or....not see the Park.

People get drowned on these trips every year on the Snake River. There are many undertows and vortexs. Always wear your life vest. Sometimes people are sucked right of them when they fall in. The victims are sometimes sucked down and their bodies are not found for days or months. I personally will not go on these rafting trips. I fish this river from the bank and it is dangerous. JMHO

RE: Hwy 287 from I-80 to South Yellowstone Entrance

The best route for no passes and time is to stay on I-80 until Rock Springs, WY, then head north to Pinedale. Then Pinedale down the Hoback River to Jackson Hole. There are virtually NO passes to climb. Pinedale to Jackson is beautiful drive.

RE: Mouse/Mice proofing

Mouse spray I checked the site out. The stuff looks like it is really expensive @ $100/GAL. and that will only do a 24" rig. It also doen't say how long it lasts before re-applying. If that were for a year or two that would not be too bad.

Moisheh you said " Do not use a notary or good real estate agent. The notary is the most important part of the purchase." What does that mean? Is that supposed to say, "Do use.... ?

RE: Mouse/Mice proofing

I've used the same storage facility since 03. During that period I've had about 7 different trailers in the storage. We have never had a mouse. I have heard that the owner sprays something all around the facility that keeps the mice away. I do not know what it is. I do keep two mouse feeders beside the tires to try and deep them out if they do get there. Anyway I've never had one in the trailer. Why don't you ask the owner and let us know what that may be. I am sure he would have to redo it often.

RE: Boondocking pet peeves, I really hate it when...

One time we went antelope hunting out in the middle of the Wyoming desert with no trees and just 3 ft. high sagebush. We had been there one night, already. It was just about an hour after sundown of the 2nd night, and it was dark. We had our lights on and a campfire , when we saw vehicle lights x2 coming toward us. All of a sudden the 2 rigs pull up on the other side of our campfire about 60 feet from our trailer. Without a word the people set up camp right next to us, but at least stayed on the far side of their rigs. The next morning we could see they were from California. Go figure..... Oh! Did I say thats what I hate when I'm boodocking? If they were from Wyoming they would have brought their rifles and kept you up all night with gunfire which was what I experienced on my last trip to Shoshone. Well ....you did not get the gist of my posts. You violated the rule and camped way to close too them. As someone else posted, that must have been their way of "clearing the crashers". I hope you had the courtesy to move. And thanks for the idea. I will make sure to fire my guns several times right after the crashers arrive. I'll set up some cans and practice with my night vision scope that I bought with all that extra money DC sent me.
