RE: Prostate cancer at 44 ???

Well, you are certainly correct when you said it changes things. Advice I got was "don't let the cancer run your life", which is good advice, but on the other hand, cancer TREATMENT has a way of running over you. If it is not the time and expense of the treatments, the side effects have a way of changing you life for awhile.
The GOOD news is that, from what I've read, Prostrate cancer is certainly beatable, and chances are you will fully recover. You may lose you prostrate, but there are worse things. A friend is convinced that castration is the one cure for almost any cancer in the area. Don't know about that.
Doctors and hospitals are doing amazing things these days. I am in the midst of colon cancer of the liver. Beat both bladder cancer and colon cancer, but the colon cancer has moved to the liver, and that is a bit more difficult to deal with. We are winning right now, but like I said about, the side effects do have a way of getting my attention. Still, I have been able to do almost anything I like without any problems, and some others with difficulty.
So, I would advise: don't ever take no for an answer, learn as much as you can about this. (we are very lucky to have the internet), and stay positive. You WILL beat this, and you will discover just how precious everyday mundane life can be.

RE: The U.S Postal Service

The postal service could pay it's own way, but congress has mandated that they fund their retirement program thru the next 75 years (not sure of the numbers) and do it within the next few years. That is an enormous burden put on the back of the postal service, and quite unrealistic, but hey, congress knows best.

RE: Heroes

well, just to set the record straight, "Mayberry RFD" was a TV program. Even in California, TV programs, even good ones, have little if anything to do with reality.
Now then, as for reality, cops don't act, and certainly don't look like the TV cops. TV is make believe.
I don't know this as fact, but I will go out on a limb and say that most cops are honest hard working people, doing a difficult job that almost no one really appreciates (especially when you get pulled over for speeding) These are people that deserve our respect, but again, they are not heros.

RE: Heroes

Crowe; I would agree that wearing a uniform does not make you a true hero. But, I will go a bit further and say that just because you put on a uniform, there is not alway the expectation of being put in harm's way. I know a few cops that are in their jobs strictly as a power trip. While being a cop may expose one to danger, most cops never pull their guns in service. Firefighters are also expected to put themselves in harm's way, but they almost never voluntary go in harm way. If a building has a chance of falling in, they do not enter. Granted, there are a rare few that will disregard and personal danger to rescue someone, and it is those who deserve the title "Hero".
As for the armed forces, well over 90% of our armed forces will never see combat or be exposed to enemy action. There are thousands of personnel on an aircraft carrier, yet only a few dozen air crew actually have any chance of engaging the enemy.
Now then, don't for a minute suggest that I do not respect every member of the armed forces, our firefighters, and LEOs. I will give each and every individual due respect until they personnaly give me cause to not respect them.
The whole point of this is that by assigning the term "hero" to everyone that puts on a uniform deminisishes the meaning of the word.
An EMT that shows up at your house and performs CPR to save your life certainly puts you in his debt, but a EMT that exposes himself to enemy fire to perform aid to a wounded warrior or citizen is indeed a Hero. There is a difference.

RE: Heroes

Now this is something I feel very strongly about. I do believe that the term "hero" has been way over used, and therefore delutes the value of the word when applied to true heros. Firefighters, Police, and even memebers of the armed forces are NOT heroes by default just because they wear the uniform. There are for sure, many, many of these fine men and women that truly deserve the title "Hero", but most are simply performing a vital service to our country, and should be recognized as such, but appling the term "Hero" to anyone in uniform degrades the status of our true heros.
We have enough true heros, and we should recognize them as such. All those that serve our country should also be recognized, but not as heroes

RE: VA Health Care

I don't have a "service connected disability" that is an issue, but my records seem to be intact.
I am getting supurb treatment at the VA health care centers in both San Antonio, and Denver. I learned early on in my VA experience to make friends with the nurses. They are the ones that know how things run, and how to get things done. Didn't have much of an problem when I moved my treatment from Denver to San Antonio. But, most VA hospitals have a "social worker" that can help with many of these issues. They are certainly on your side, and work hard to get things done. You need to understand that you are dealing with a "bureauracy", so getting an early start is never a bad idea. That is not a problem reserved for the VA. I had just as much "run around" with M D Anderson, and they are a long way from Military or Government.
Anyway, like I said. Make friends with the nurses, talk with the social worker, and if it can be done, they will find a way.

RE: Reading NHRA this weekend

Nope. Use the week of the Nationals to do some much needed tweeking. We don't fit into any of the classes they run at Divisionals or Nationals, and for me, just too many people, (mostly drunk). The fuel cars are fun, but the rest are just drag racing, and unless you have a dog in the fight, drag racing is a boring spectator sport. A fun participant sport, but not so good to watch.

To everyone I promised a new motorhome, sorry. The list of America's 10 riches people is out, and I didn't make it again. BUT, this time I missed by just a few Billion dollars. Maybe next year. (you don't know, it could happen)

RE: what can you tell me about Tennessee?

Veronica;
Do you have any information on RV parks? We are full timers, and would need a year round park. I noticed a lot of the parks in the area close for the Winter. Is that due to weather, or lack of RVers?
We are going to make a guick pass thru the area, and pick some areas we are really interested in, then go back later and spend some time checking things out.

what can you tell me about Tennessee?

We are seriously considering relocating to Tennessee. Right now our focus is on the NorthEast part of the state.
We have been thinking of making some changes for some time now, and Tennessee seems like it should work for us.
Our reasons for choosing NE Tennessee would be close access to the VA hospital in Johnson City, a number of drag stripes within reasonable towing distance, climate, and the people.
I don't have any hard evidence of the quality of care at the VA hospital, so if anyone has been treated there, I sure would like to have your input. Also, any insight you may wish to offer on lifestyle, cost of living, climate, and people, that would also be very helpful.
Thanks for anything you may wish to post

RE: Is the economy changing you plans for the winter?

We too are full timers. Right now, for medical reasons, we are staying in South Texas full time. Hopefully, the medical reasons will change, and we can get back to some traveling.
But, as for the Financial part of this life style, we are doing ok. We are a long way from being impacted by President Obama's tax the rich program, we are comfortable. As the saying goes, we have a beer appetite on a whiskey budget.
We are hoping the economy comes around sometime in the forseeable future. More so for our friends that are in tighter spots than we.

RE: Do you remember and...

Does anyone remember the "Andy Devine Show" with "magic froggy". or on the Lassie show. There was a call sign and counter sign between Timmy and his friend "chubby" (I think). I believe the call sign was "key ya key" and I think the counter sign was "key ya kay", but I've had a margarita or two since, and sometimes I forget

RE: Drive-thru windows

While I agree that "drive thrus" are not my thing, It is for a different reason that I do not use them. I AM RETIRED. I am so over the 30 minute lunches, or eating on the fly between job sites.
Also, I am not real fond of "fast food" joints. A cheese burger now and again, but not as a daily diet.
We reallly enjoy lingering over lunch, sometimes with friends, and almost always without a hoard of screeming children. Kids are great, but a quite lunch also has merit.
But, as far as the drive thru issue. Yes, I agree. I also believe that it is just another way of getting thru the day without having to actually deal with another human being face to face. You see it all the time. 15 people standing on a corner waiting for the walk light and justt about everyone of them on their ipod, ipad, smart phone, or game boy, and not a single word or greeting exchanged. But, that's just my opinion.

RE: When I was your age.............

Everytime I see one of the Grand Kids, I ask; "how old are you now". They will, of course, say something like "seven and a half", to which I reply: "Well, when I was you age, I was already nine years old." When they ask me how that is possible, I tell them I was born two years premature. We all have a laugh, and then the little brats tackle me and beat me into submission (Dairy Queen run)

RE: Family Reunions.....do you have one?

Well, Peg and I are now the "elders" in our family. This year, we took our entire family (16) on a cruise. it was great. First time our four kids and their families have been together. First time the kids themselves have been together in about 30 years.
Nest time (2014) Peg's Brother and Sister will be coming with their brood in tow. This time, it will be "pay your own way". We are still trying to recover from the hit to our savings. Peg had a grand time, so it was worth it.
